It naa been as sumed for some time past that anxiety over the money outlook was tue sole re straining innuence against speculative ad vance in slocks, tne general brightness of tne Industrial situation serving to cause a cnaring aMninst this restraint on the i.art or iroiessional operators of all entases. immediate developments In the munev market were distinctly towards re laxation ot tennlon. but this did not pre vent weakness In stocks, the tendency prices being towards the lower level tne outset. The technical condition of the market after last week's considerable advance, which, moreover, was made In face of admonitorv pleading on the part of a large element in Wall street, might be held accountable for the reaction In itself. Snf tlcteni profits had accrued from the rise to Induce some selling to take advantage of anv strengthening li fluence which would help the market to absorb the sales, put there were, besides, some factors of a pos itive nature against the market. On the side of the money situation the most dis cussed development was the expression of opinion on the part of the Bank of France and of Paris bankers contained In a cable to the Associated Press last night on the prospects of a gold movement to New Yoik. The news of an engagement of 21 .!. 000 of gold for shipment to New York, nlso contained in the Paris dispatch, was confirmed In New York. It became known that 4"o.i! additional In gold had been secured yesterday afternoon. The with drawals up to this time sre all from the Londc-n market. As a consequence a fur ther advance in the Bank of England rate Is expected this week In order to divert New York s demand from London to Paris. This prospect unsettled the London mar ket. The renewal of the crisis regarding af fairs in Morocco was another disturbing Influence in foreign markets. The heavy volume of selling for foreign account In the stock market here was the Immediate consequence, and this played no small part In the weak tone of the market. With the course of prices downward once es tablished attention was once more given to unfavorable factors. The possibility of mischief growing out of the contest for control of the Wabash was much discussed. The depression among the Sout hwesterns was aggravated by the total discourage ment to the hopes of an early dividend disbursements on the Missouri. Kansas & Texas preferred shares contained In the annual report of the president. Railroad earnings In that section as now reported compare with the heavy St. Louis expo sition earnings of last year, making the contrast unfavorable. The weeklv crop bulletin of the weather bureau also reported some damage to the corn crop. Besides the benefit of addi tional gold engagements, the local money market was relieved from the absorption by the subtreasury, the operations of which have converted the loss of last week by the banks Into a small gain. Pension payments and purchase of foreign ex change by the postofflce departments are the sjieclal Items of the Increased govern ment expenditure. That Institution also paid out several hundred thousand dollars todav on a transfer from San Francisco. While the conditions of the money market were brightened In this way, opinion to wards the prospect for the next few weeks continues decidedly conservative. The average rate for call loans was rather higher than yesterday. Bonds were heavv. Total sales, par value, 83,160.000. United States bonds were all unchanged on call. The offerings were pretty well mixed, a good many feeders being In cluded In the receipts, a well as many light lambs The stuff did not arrive very early and salesmen were not ready to show their holdings until well along In the forenoon and as a consequence trading wss slow and the market wss dull during the early hours of the morning. Buyers were out early looking over the receipts and. al though a little slow about taking hold, still they showed a disposition to take on supplies, and the demand was equal to the supply. Fat sheep and lambs held up In good shape and prices were fully steady with yesterday. There was a good supply of feeder sheep gnd lambs here and feeder buyers had a chance to fill some of their orders. The break last week brought buyers back, as many of them expected still lower prices this week. But this has not been the case for the two day. Still, the demand Is satisfactory and the market today ruled generally steady. At the time of closing this report the prospects were good for everything being sold. The receipt were Just about the same a last Tuesday, but were about weventv elght loads heavier than the correspond ing day last year. Tha quality of the cattle was fairly good. While the market held urj In rood sham today, the trade could hardly be said to be in favor of the selling Interests, as there was a weak undertone to the trade all the morning. The hlg run was largely responsible for the slowness and the weakness shown. Hovers were slow taking hold and salesmen with nny tlilng common found It hard to dispose of. There wa a fair sprinkling of native cattle on sale and on the very best kinds prices were for the most part Just about steady, but the medium grades and half fat warmed up stuff was In poor demand and changed hands largely at lower prices. A the morning advanced the trade on the natives eased off a little and steady prices became scarce, nearly everything going at lower figures. Western cattle constituted the most of the receipts and were In a little better demand than the natives, al though there was but little life to the trade. The choice grades were Just about steady, but the commoner grades were weak to a nttie lower. There wa a fair suddIv of cows and heifer on sale and there was a weak feeling to the trade all through the morn ing. Something good brought steady prices, but the bulk of the gtuff, being common. was off about a dime Trading In this division was uneven and some salesmen having something that Just suited the eye of the buyer were quoting the market steady. There wss not much life to the trade and the market was druggy. Bulla, vent calves and stags felt the weakness shown In the trade on other classes cf cattle and were a little easier. Btockers and feeders were again In rood demand and the supply was fairly liberal. On the, good heavy, fleshy stuff prices rated stronger and active and the common and lighter weights were Just about steady. Representative sales: BEEF STEERS. The stuff was of about the usual quality, but was a little alow get. ting In. The small supply helped hold the market up and buyeis were picking the offerings up a load at a time, so that there wss little or no activity to the trade. The general market was steady to strong with i the bulk of the hogs celling at 3eS01j53S with a top of 80 40, tli same bulk and top ua was n.ade here yesterday. There were some hugs sold early that looked strong to a Utile higher, but the market could best be quoted as noted above. After th more urgent orders had been filled there was a lull In tbe trade and buet were doing very little for a time and the stuff moved slowly but at about the same prices.
