Belief In a heavy movement of wheat Impending northwest produced weakness in tha - wheat market here today. At the close the December delivery was off Wc. corn Is down ViJ c. Oats are up Ac. Provisions show a loes of &al2'c Hentlment In the wheat pit was rather bearish at the opening, the December option being oft a shade at KINc The origin of the easier undertone was a continuation of clear weather In the northwest. Notwith standing, however, that the day's receipts of wheat at the northwestern grain cen ters were more than double 4he-receipts of the corresponding day last year, the de mand from millers today was reported ss so urgent that all of today's arrivals were readily disposed of. This fact temporarily checked the free selling of wheat her. On a demand from a leading bull, the mar ket soon became quite firm. December ad vancing to 8374)C The upturn wan hastened by reports from Canada to the effect that threshing returns from Manitoba showed an Increase in the number of complaints regarding small yield. On the bulge a large majority of traders In the pit re curring to the Idea of Increased receipts northwest seemed eager to take advan tage of the higher prices The result was a quick reaction. Fart of the selling was attributed to bearish Kuropean advices. According to a prominent English crop statistician, the wheat crop of France Is estimated at 320,0fln.OO0 bu., compared with 292.000,000 bu. a year ago. Keports nom India asserted that the wheat crop there had ben greatly benefited by heavy rains in provinces where drouth had previously prevailed. For December the lowest point of the day was reached at 82lS'a82c. The market closed weak, with December at (S2V- Clearances of wheat and IRur were equal to 151,600 bu. Primary receipts were l.ulrt.000 bu., compared with 992.UUU bu. a year ago. Minneapolis, Duluth and Chl cgo reported receipt of 719 cars, against 43S cars last week and cars a year aao. As a result of unsettled weather In the middle west the corn market was quite firm early in the session In spite of lllH-ral primary receipts. Commission houses were active buyers. Later support was lacking and prices eased off. The weakness of wheat had some effect. Hie market closed weak, with prices at the lowest point of the day. December opened unchanged to a shade higher at 43Vqlc to 43c. sold up to 44V4,c and then declined to 4.l"c. Final quotations were at 43re. Local receipts were 271 cars, with 127 of contract grnde. Small local recelpta had a strengthening Influence on the oats market. Llevators and cash interests were the principal buy ers. A good export demand was still an aid to bulls The market closed firm. De cember opened a shade higher at -. sold up to 27e and closed at 27c. Local receipts were 219 cars. Provisions were weak, following a loc decline In the price of live hogs. At the close January pork was off l!Hc at I12.J.W. lard was off 12Hc at .72tt, and ribs were down 6c at 86.35. . NEW YORK STOCKS AND BONDS Flnotuationi in Values Are Constant asd BsTtr Tar ia One Directien. WAITING ON MONEY DEVELOPMENTS Probable Receipt ,of Gold from Abroad Xot Believed to Be Heavy Enongh to Rtlsnnlnta Specnlatlon. NEW YORK. Sept. 13,-As a reflection of any fixed conviction on the prospect of vaiues today a stock market was not of much use. Tne fluctuations were constant and never far In one direction. In the stock wt.lch moved most notably the ac tion suggested professional operation for manipulative purposes. Gain developed first were not continued, the stocks af fected being left to themselves In the later dealings, while attention was turned to new points. The engagement of gold yesterday for shipment to New York continued Its good effect on sentiment, but the more urgent demand for stocks which It stimulated yesterday was evidently from uncovered shorts and with the satisfaction of this demand trading became languid and Indlf ferent. Commission house business was reported to be of Insignificant volume. The perception grew that the relinquishment of gold from foreign centers, while It might constitute a resource against severe dam age from money stringency in the New York market, It waa by no means calcu lated to provide a redundancy of funds here such as might stimulate an unbridled speculation. Whatever may be New York's ability to draw on foreign money markets It Is believed that a period of considerably higher rates for money Is still Inevitable between now and the period when the movement of the crops Is completed. Sterling exchange steadied here and the suggestion found credence that exchange bills were being purchased against great remittance of Japanese funds on deposit here to order, the process which has de veloped of late whenever exchange rates went to a profitable level for that opera tion. It was generally expected aa well that the Bank of England would make a further advance In its official discount rate at tomorrow's session of the govern ors In order to Interpose a further obsta cle to the loss of gold by Ixmdon. Mean time the suhtreasury continued its large Inroad on New York bitnk reserves, the absorption reached today since the lat bank statement rising to over 86,000,000. Rumor was set afloat during the day that the serretnry of the treasury had decided to redeposit 32O.00O.iXO of government funds In New York banks which were withdrawn from the nationals In July, but this rumor was offlrlallv denied. Some of yesterday's strong stocK became sharplv reactionary, notably Plnss-flheffield Steel, the stock dividend distribution coming In for some criticism. Copper fell easily In London and was marked down a fraction In the pound here. The character of the day's advances In stocks awakened distrust. They were all lost during the latter part of the day and In the final hour prices fell below last night throughout. The closing was easy. Bonds were Irregular; total sales, par value, 32.660.000. United States 2s declined H, while the old 4s advanced and the new 4s per cent on call. The quotations on the New York Stock exchange raiged as follows: sales. The re ceipts were about 111 cats lighter than last Wednesday and about 33 cars lighter than the same day lust year. The general qual ity of the cattle was good. There was only a small supply of native steers here and the market was Just about steady. The trade on the cornfeds has not been any too satisfactory of late, Jbt.it with the light run today they were In belter de mand. Western cattle were also wanted and prices were Just about steady. The Inclement weather hud a depressing effect on market conditions and trade for the most part was slow and dull. The stuff kept straggling In all morning and buyers were not bidding freely. Salesmen with common stuff, either westerns or natives, found them slow to move and In some cases a decline in prices was noted. Cattle did not go over the scales very fast and It was lata before a clearance was made. Western rattle made up the most of the receipts In the cow and heifer division to day and there was a better feeling to the trade. The good stuff was wanted and was In fairly active demand at stronger prices. The commoner kinds were slower In moving and ruled generally steady. Bu. veal calves and stags were In about the same notches as yesterday, the market being steady. Stockers and feeders were In good demand again today and there was considerable ac tivity to the trade. Buyers were out after the good heavy cattle and a clearance was made In good season. Prices were generally steady, but some of the lightish, common kinds were a little weak. The wet weather had a depress ing effect on the market, the sheep being wet and In no condition to be shown. The stun was well mixed and the fat stuff had to be gotten out of the way before very much could be done with the feeders. Tbe market was slow In opening and trading waa dull and draggy all through. Prices were uneven, some sales looking Just about steady, while others were lower, some salesmen being compelled to take oft a dime and hi some cases even more than this. Feeders were In good demand, but ths trade wag draggy and prices generally lower.
