H. W. Spang of New York city, an expert
on the subject of lightning protection, be
lieves that the danger to buildings from
lightning Is Increasing. In an interview in
the New York Sun he says:
"From Investigations made byv me since
1858 of the effects of ligntnlng discharge,
I have found that the area of the electrical
charge, intensely Induced upon the earth,
and with which the atmospheric electricity
principally unites by the lightning dis
charge, varies from about a half mile to
two miles, according to the height and area
of thunder cloud conductivity of the sur
face earth, depth of the underground
water bed and the presence of underground
water, gas and other metal pipes, railway
tracks, wire fences and overhead and
underground electrical wires.
"The union of the atmospheric electricity
with that of the earth Is effected by a
series of discharges In rapid aucceslon,
giving rise to the vivid, quivering light,
commonly known as lightning, and also
causing certain phenomena which are er
roneously regarded as freaks. The union of
the atmospheric electricity with that of the
earth by a lightning discharge can only be
effected within a great area and not at
a single point or within a small area of
earth, as theorized from laboratory experi
ments; and I will add that any lightning
theory based upon a laboratory experiment
Is not worth the least consideration.
"For ages nature has been clearly indi
cating Its electrical actions and wants,
and the unsatisfactory state of the light
ning protection art Is due to the neglect or
Inability of scientists and electricians prop
erly to Investigate and Interpret natural
electrical phenomena.
"Reference was made by Greek writers
more than 2,200 years ago to the attraction
of lightning discharges for great oak and
other trees with outstretching branches
and dense foliage. Similar phenomena
were observed by Faraday, Henry and
other eminent scientists of the last cen
tury, and these phenomena were not fully
understood by them.

of persons, whether In a circus, grand
stand of r race track, military encampment
or a church.
"Up to the time of the IntnxVirtlon of
water pipes In buildings the Franklin rod
was a fair success as a lightning con
ductor, this being accounted for by the
fact that the atmospheric electricity while
flowing to the earth divided into numerous
branches, of which the rod received one
branch and the adjacent houses, trees
or other objects the other brsnches.
"Since the Introduction ot the under
ground water, gas and other metal pipes,
railway tracks, wire fences and electrical
wires, the atmospheric electricity concen
trates and flows to such extended metal
conductors and the earth In from one to
four main raths.
"The metal flnlals. rldgings, gutters,
metal roofs, rain leaders, ventilating, gas,
water and drainage pipes, electrlo light
conduits (Iron tubes), metal laths, .ceilings,
etc., although electrically Insulated from
each other, offer a greater soope and a
hundredfold greater attraotlon for a light
ning discharge than that offered by the best
outside lightning rod or rods, as usually
employed.
"The overhead telephone and electrlo
light wires as now connected wlfh buildings
also Invite lightning discharges to take
place In line therewith, and also with the
Interior of the buildings, resulting In dam
age thereto, notwithstanding the employ,
ment of lightning arresters and safety
fuses with such wires.
The Main Trouble.
'7n fact, from hn true lightning stand
point the present architecture and electrlo
engineering of buildings Is unsclefftlflo and
defective. Even the modern skyscraper ts
not strictly a scientifically constructed
building.
"The steel framework - and great Iron
caissons are electrified by Induction during
a thunderstorm: but when they are sepa
rated by cement, brick and stone tbey do
not benr a proper electrical rein Hon wVh
each other, and Assures are liable to be
created In such Intervening material by
terrlflo lightning discharges In line with
such a building.
'The electrlo light wires tn a skyscraper
or other building are also highly electrified
by Induction during a thunderstorm, but
owing to a lack of a proper electrical rela
tion between such wires and the Interior
metal pipes, etc.. the insulation of such
wires Is often Impaired by such induced
charges as one or more convenient dis
charging points coincident with a lightning
discharge. This Impairment of such Insula
tion may not manifest Itself until favorable
conditions are accidentally created for the
grounding action of the electric light cur
rent, which Is then attended with Its flow
over the Impaired Insulation to Its metal
conduit, and thence to adjacent discon
nected metal pipe or other grounded metaj
work, accompanied with an electrlo ara
and fire.
"The many cases reported of electrlo
fires due to defective Insulation of electrlo
light wires should really be attributed to
unscientific Installation.

"The jfollowlng statistics of lightning
fires In this country have been complied
from the Chronicle fire tables, and the
great increase Is principally due to the
general introduction of wire fence In the
rural districts, the Increasing use of metal
work and pipes about buildings and tha
Increasing extension of electrlo light and
telephone wires, especially to suburban
property.

"Of the lightning fires In this country
during the five years ended 1902 thero
were 9,340 barns, stables and granaries;
ninety warehouses containing cotton, to
bacco, etc.; thirty-five, grain elevators,
thirty-seven Ice houses, twelve lumber
yards, 465 churches, 121 school houses. 111
large buildings, embracing asylums, court
houses, public halls, hotels and theaters,
twelve college buildings, 101 country and
general stores, eight car barns, eighteen
electric power stations, twenty-seven tele
phone and telegraph offices, 116 railroad
depots and 6,247 miscellaneous buildings,
embracing- dwellings, stores, mills, facto
ries and similar structures.
"There Is also considerable damage
caused underground by lightning dis
charges, such as the shattering of brick and
terra cotta sewers and the Impairment of
the joints of gas and water pipes, espec
ially where laid In rock or earth of poor
conductivity. A certain portion of tha gas
leakage loss can be attributed to the de
structive effects of lightning discharges
upon the underground pipe Joints, especi
ally as gas pipes are generally employed as
ground connections for lightning arresters.
Proper Protest Ion.
"Owing to the greatly increased lightning
losses the Underwriters' National Pro
tective association Is considering the adop
tion of rules and regulations for the proper
protection of buildings in this country. It
Is obvious that no radical reduction of
lightning losses can be expected under tha
present unselentiflo architecture and elec
tric engineering.
"The metal work and pipe upon the out
side and inside of a building should be metal
lcally connected together and bear a proper
electrical relation with the earth In order
to effect absolute lightning protection. Tha
Interior electrlo light wires should bear a
proper electrical relation with the Interior
metal work and pipes In order to prevent
the Impairment of the Insulation of such
wires by a lightning discharge and also
prevent electric arcs and fires being created
In a building by the grounding action of
the electric light current.
"From results obtained by me during the
last ten years I have found that In a village
or any suburban section absolute lightning
protection of all buildings, structures and
electrical currents therein can best be ef-
fee ted by a general System qf suitable
metallic conductors properly employed."

Lourdea and the great annual pilgrimage
this year has been as remarkable as
during, previous years. A girl named
Louise Lompuy, who had been a hospital
nurse, and who has been under treatment
for consumption since last year, suddenly
sprang to her feet and shouted that she
was cured. Although when she started for
Iourdes she was so 111 that It was confi
dently expected that she would not outlive
the Journey, the doctors now pronounce
her to be In good health. The lesion la
her lungs Is stated to be completely healed
and her strength and her appetite have
returned.
Another rase Is that of a Breton girl of
