Although there was a snarp Drcaa m prices at eastern points, the market here for the week shows up very satisfactorily. The steer trade has been good and prices for the most part flowed steadily up ward. There was a gooa, strong twrnuin from all sources for supplies and the cattle were cleaned up in good shape nearly every day. April 2 Even though specu lators have Ignored favorable Industrial de velopments In all lines, and prices have been broken, nevertheless, even the most conservative financial writers who are favoring the bear side admit that only the most dire circumstances ran ultimately ef fect the upward trend of the market. Bear writers have very little ground to atand on. A fear of tight money, and the hlfth level which stocks have now reached, arc practically their only arguments. One financial writer of International merit even goes so far as to Justify his pessimism by declaring that the time for reaction has come because the American people may not be trusted to continue to elect presidents who stand for conserva tive financial methods. This writer holds that the great number of Immigrants pour ing Into our country will largely Influ ence, elections, which will result in placing presidents with no adequate sense of con servative financial principles In the chair. Any reasonable reader can. of course, see at a glance that conclusions of this character are very far fetched: and when financial writer of evident ability alludes to possibilities of this character In order to Justify his bear sentiments on the mar ket, It becomes very evident that bear material Is very scarce. Pome circu lars agree to send out Important nd valuable Information. Others Invite pros pective clients to participate In the. profits derived from Interests In pools that are formed, and so on. Heading matter of this flowery variety should be carefully avoided when a selection Is made for speculation. Trading on the exchanges has been very heavy, and as a result of the sharp slumps the market Is In a feverish and panlckv condition. A ronsplclous absence of sup port Is the material factor In the slumps which occur Among the big operators who were credited with bring behind the short selling were dates. I .a v. son and Keene. The sharp declines forred the liquidation of big bull pools. In order to hedge losses money on these pools went short on the market very strongly. Fear of higher money rates, owing to the de mand for money from the interior for mov ing crops, was largely restionslble for the breaks. It was rumored about that the bank statements will make a poor showing. Manv of the big speculators fear that manv of the banks will have to call loans made to speculators. The foreign market re flected the conditions existing here. On Thursday morning It looked as though nothing could stop the decline, but Just about the hour before closing heavy buy ing orders caused reactions. Atchison and National Lead were the leaders. Heavy bank Interests were rumored to be re sponsible for this buying. Morgan and Standard Oil Interests ore declared to have been most active. At the present writing short Interests are beginning to cover. Thursday was one t,f those freak days which put to flight all the axioms of suc cessful trading Favorable and bullish factors were absolutely Ignored. Those, who are working on the short side of the market had all the best of the sentiment. At this particular time the market Is In a nervous excitable condition, but thn fact cannot be gainsaid that the general outlook and the preponderance of statisti cal facts with relation to improved condi tions are all in favor of higher prices. It Is a good sign, however, that the pub lic Is not so easllv enticed Into the market as In the past. The smaller Industrial or ganisations with which I am constantly In touch are receiving splendid support, and are securing good values for their securi ties There are three or tour institutions In the middle west that are Inviting capital Into their enterprises that report that tho Improvement within the last thirty days was much more than had ever been ex pected.
