BURGLARS STILL IN BUSINESS

The home of Attorney William P. Wap
plch. 2211 Webster street, was enterel
some time Wednesday by a burglar who
tore off a screen and broke through two
doors to gain entrance to the Inner part
of the house. Six pearl-handled knives,
a collection of old coins, revolver and
pair of opera glasses, all valued at $75.
were taken by the Intruder.
Mrs. Wapplch Is away on her summer va
cation and It Is presumed the thief en- .
tered about noon, as a neighbor woman ,
reports she saw a man prowling around '
about noon. The stranger asked for food
at several houses In the vicinity.
Burglars visited the home of Will Tetter
at 108 North Thirty-first avenue Wednesday
night for the second time In two weeks.
Mrs. Tetter was out of the city, Mr.
Yetter was at the Field club and only
the servant girl was at home. She was
upstairs when she heard a noise on tho
lower floor. Thinking to capture the ln-
truder, she went to the telephone and
called the police station. In a sflort tlmo
a detective appeared. He approached the
house from the rear that he might Inter
cept any one whom he might see running
away. He found no one, but the screen
at the dining room window had been pried
loose with a chisel and a number of burnt
matches on the sill showed thnt the ma
rauder had been examining the window.
He had been frightened away, presurnnMy
by the girl. The house was entered a
week ago last Tuesday night and roblied
of $50 worth of silverware while the girl
was upstairs.

The police have mada another raid on
a rendezvous at Tenth and Davenport
streets, known as the "gravel pit." Tim
place Is a vacant lot at the rear of a
saloon and Is a favorite gathering pluca
for the "sons of rest," who want to gt
away from the world of cares and talk tt
over with a can of beer.
The raid brought In George Cunningham,
George Lewis, Frank Hays, Sam Love,
Mike Kearna, Thomas Mackey, Thomas
Dougherty and Daniel Fltzgibbon, from all
parts of the country. The first two men
tioned were discharged, being strangers
here. The rest were either sentenced or
fined.
