Foreign Financial.
LONDON. Aug. 81. Money was In In
creased demand In the market today at
higher rates. Discounts were firmer. There
was a disposition to work cautiously In
view of the falling off of French exchansre.
which allows Paris to absorb the supplies
of bar gold. Trading on the Stock ex
change was less active, but the undertone
was firm, owing to a steadv Investment
demand, but speculators were taking profits
In most departments. Consols eased early,
bnt hardened later. Americans opened weak
under the lead of Union Pacific, ruled
around parity with some Irregularity during
" morning out aeennea in me ariernoon
on further liquidation on Wall street, and
closed easy. Foreigners were uuleter than
yesterday, though there was a tendency
In some instances to harden. Copper shares
were easy In sympathy with the metal.
Japanese Imperial 4s of 1904 were quoted
t
RERUN. Aug. 31. Trading on the Bourse
today was generally quiet on New York
advices. Russian Imperial 4s were 1 per
cent higher.
PARIS. Aug. 31. Prices on the Bourse
today were unsteady, the settlement caus
ing realizations. Russian bonds ot 1901 fell
96c and those of 194 fell Sf. French rentes
reacnea parity.

letting the others go. The general msrket
could best be quoted slow, but steady,
with the bulk of the hesvv stuff selling at
t.7MW and the lighter welshts at 5 70tf
5 SS Tops for prime light hogs reached
36 95. Heavy hogs were again lower, as
were the medium weights not showing
quality. Ruyers have been looking at the
quality of the hogs for some days and un
less the hogs are good they are indifferent.
Oood shipping weights were In fair de
mand and were picked up first, but unless
the stuff was whst the packers wanted
general trade was slow and dull, as noted
sbove.

SHEEP There was nnother modernte run
here today, about thirty-seven cars being
on sale. As hss been the case for some
time tha big end of the receipts consisted
of killers and the feeder supply was
light and away below the requirements
of the trade. Although fat sheen have
constituted the big end of the offerings
for some time past, there have been hardly
enough to fill the demand. The market
today was satisfactory In every resnec-.
There was a good call for sheep of all
kinds and after trsrllnv commenced there
was considerable activity displayed Prices
on both fat sheep and lambs were fully
steady as were also the feeders.
The onlv cause for comnlalnt that ope
rators on the market have Is the short
age In the supply of feeder sheep and
lamns. As the prospects for a large
corn cron tmnrove farmers are more anx
ious than ever to secure a few feeders
so that the orders In the hands of com
mission men to Imv are far in recess OT
the sunnlv of that kind of stock. The
market is hndlv In need nf at least twenty
five cars of feeders dally for some time
to rntti.

per market also added to Its decline of yes
terday, closing at 70 12a 6d for spot and
70 7s6d for futures. Locally the situation
Is considered abnormal. Many authorities
claim there is plenty of copper to go

are In a few strong hands, and while It Is
believed that forward business can be done
quite freely around 164c those In need of
spot supplies are made lo pay high prices.

CATTLE There was only a moderate run
of cattle here, about lu3 loads being on sale,
The receipts were heavier by seventy-two
cars than last Thursday and eighty-eight
cars Heavier than the same days last year.
The quality of the offerings was good.
Beef steers were In heaviest supply, but
there were few cornfeds on sale. There
was quite a bull movement to the trade and
conditions favored selling Interests. The
quality of the cattle was good and there
was a good, strong demand from all
sources. Native cattle have been In best
demand for some time, but today conditions
were reversed and the westerns had the
best of It. Buyers were after supplies and
trading was active. The most of the stuff
was cleaned up In good season. The gen
eral market was strong and In some cases
higher prices were paid.
There was a fair supply of cows and heif
ers on sale and there was a good, strong
fe'llng to the trade. The stuff was of good
quality and buyers went after It from the
start. Trading was active and the general
market was strong to a dime higher. The
she stuff has been In good demand all the
week and the advance today puts prices
about a quarter higher than Monday's mar
ket. The stuff was cleaned up before midday.
Buns, veai caives ana stags ruled firm,
prices being In about the same notches as
yesterday.
Stockers and feeders were In good, active
demand and trading was brisk. There were
plenty of orders to be filled and prices ruled
strong to a dime higher. Representative
