In the day the market lucked any bullish
Incentive and prices steadily declined. For
September the lowest point of the day was
reached at 774c. December sold off to 794.
During the last half hour a slight rally
occured on buying by shorts who were
forced to cover by a report from Kanas
Ity claiming small lots of whoat had ben
worked for exoort bv wsv of the tjulf of
Mexico, At the close, however, the general
one of the market was rather week. Final

in feature or trading in the corn marKer
was a sharp upturn m the price of the
September delivery. Pit traders sold short

price of the September option. Weather

of the crop and cables were lower. The

Weakness of wheat had a bearish effect
on the oat market. Trailing was of small
volume and price fluctuated within a nar
row range. September opened a shade
higher at 2S4'u2flS,c, sold off to 254c and
closed at 2fM.o. December ranared between

The declining tendency of wheat had ap

NEW YORK. Aug Sn.-As wa to be ex
pected the effect of yesterdsy's historic
event at Portsmouth found clearer reflec
tion on the Stock exchanges of Europe
than on our own. Ixindon, Paris and Rer
un reported a vastly better tone. This was
shown In the Improved prices for Russian
and Japanese Issues, advices In British
consols and French rentes snd London
purchases of American securities.
The universal gratification expressed hy
financiers Justifies the belief that Amer
icas Interest In an honorable peace wss
based on something more than sentimental
grounds. The New York market refuses,
however, to be guided by those abroad. It
would serve no distinct purpose to specify
the day's movements. Suffice It to say they
were unimportant ss a whole and reflected
general apathy. The greater pert of the
day's operations were obviously profes
sional. The only stock that showed de
cided strength In the opening dealings wa
Canadian Pacific. Reading s decline of more
man i points was regnrned as qutte natural,
in view of the company's poor showing for
July. Other features of weakness were
Union raclrlc, St. Paul, New York Central,
Erie, Louisville ft Nashville and the United
States Steel Issues. The list drifted along
during the early session, but later, on its
oversold appearance, traders went In and
bought of the active issues, bringing par
tial recoveries in a number of shares and
gains In Erie and United State Steel com
mon. The strength of these stocks, to
gether with a 6-polnt advance in Pacific
Coast, were the only notable features of
the final hour, the market showing weak
ness at the close. There were wide dif
ferences between London and local price
at the opening here. London probahly took
SO.nno shares on balance, Jspanese bonds, so
conspicuously strong yesterday, were
hardly steady today, but became firm In
the final dealings. Quite apropos was the
publication of the report of the Depart
ment of Commerce and Labor, showing the
remsrkable growth of this country's trade
relations with Japan. Our greatest gains In
exports to Japan were naturally In such
articles as breadstuff and cottons and
woolens. Rumor was again busy forecast
ing the money needs of the former bel
ligerents, but In quarter wher detail
should be forthcoming It was declared that
the dav had brought no new development.
It Is tiardlv likelv that any foreign loans
will be negotiated here until the American
crop requirements have been met. On this
subject It Is not amiss to not that the
west and southwest continue to draw for
funds, 3&0.ono going to Chicago today and
33fo.oon to New Orleans.
Bonds were Irregular. Total sales, par

CATTLE There were about 140 loads of
cattle here today, which was fifty-two cars
lighter than last Wednesday and thirty
eight cars heavier than the same day last
year. The quality of the cattle was good.
There waa only a sprinkling of native
beef steers on sale, the most of the cattle
being westerns. As was the case yesterday,
there was considerable activity to the trads
and competition was keen on the limited
number of cornfeds. A the native grow
scarce the demand grows keener and prices
on these kinds have been satisfactory tor
some time. Today the market ruled gen
erally steady to a little stronger on the
natives and they were cleaned up In good
time. On the western cattle prices were
also about steady and there was consid
erable lite to the trade, a clearance being
made fairly early. As high as 15.80 waa
paid for a good bunch of natives.
There were not many cows and heifers
on sale and there was a good, strong feel
ing to the trade. Prices on she stuff have
held up In good shape so far this week and
today the market was fully steady. Only
a few cornfeds were offered, the most of
the stuff being western of fair quality.
There waa considerable life to the trade
and most of the cattle sold early.
Bulls, veal calves and stags were In good
shape and prices were fully steady with
yesterday.
The stnrker and feeder trade wa active
and there wag a good, strong demand for
supplies. On the heavy feeding stuff the
market was strong to a dime higher, while
the lighter grades and commoner kinds
were Jyst about steady. Representative

MOG9 There wss another light run to
day about eighty loads being on sale. Con

and there were no new features to the
trade. Buyers were In a bearish mood and
were Indlflerent on anything but the best
light weight Trading was slow and dull
and lltttie was done until well along In
the forenoon. The market was uneven
anil prices varied considerably. On the
verv best light weights, prices were not
far from steady while other grades wet
Jupt about a nlckle lower. The rough,
heavy packing hogs were In poor demand,
and as has been the case for some time,
buvers will not take them except st a de
cline. The bulk of the hogs sold today
at to 75115 85. As the morning advanced
trade became slower and the market wena
enrrl. heavy hogs closing a flat 10c lower.

SHEEP Receipts were
today and wore of good
moderate again
quality. There
were only thirty-two car on sale and
most of them were killers, the feeder end
being light. There are plenty of order
and buyers have been waiting for soma
time to fill them, but the receipt so far
this season have been Inadequate and there
has hardly been enough stuff here to ex'
cite competition. The market on feeder
today was fully steady and the Inquiry
broad. The killer market was also good,
but trading was a little slow. A good per
cent of the offerings consisted of lambs
and on this class of stuff buyers were ask
ing concessions and the general market wa
a little lower. Old sheet), however, were
In good strong demand, and while the trade
was not active buyers picked up the stuff
right along. General trading was done at
stronger prices and In some cases sales
were a little higher.
