VALUES ADVANCE SLIGHTLY, THEN RECEDE Market Rallies Sear the tlose and Final Prices Are Hlahest ot the Da y. NEW TORK, Aug. 29 To those who ex pected a tremendous manifestation of bul lish enthusiasm to follow the peace news from Portsmouth, the course of todsy's stock market must have been somewhat disappointing. To be sure, the early an nouncement brought an upward spurt. In which the greater part of the list. Includ ing the Japanese Issues, participated, but being followed by periods of dullness nd some hesitancy. Operations broadened later and the momentous event was re ceived with satisfaction 1y the banking In terests, relief being expressed at the elimi nation of a very disturbing factor. The at tention of these same banking Interests will now doubtless be engaged In figuring upon the peace loans which It Js generally as sumed both Russia and Japan will find convenient to negotiate. The conspicuous feature at the opening here was Canadian Pacific, which advanced to a new high record on buying credited to foreign Interests. There was a renewal of recent pressure on Reading and some of the other coalers moved In pympathy, hut later recovered. The Eele Issues especially the common, exhibited unusual strength, the common making a new high record. Amalgamated Copper was strong, with an other advance, the fifth within a week. In the price of metal. Of the other standard Issues 1'nlon Pacific sold exdlvldend of 24 per rent was strong. Although the news from Portsmouth be came known soon after noon, reports dis crediting It were current and It was not until an hour or more that traders seemed to grasp Its significance. Much of the buy ing that then set In came from the shorts, though the heavy purchases of the Japa nese Issues by fdrelicn houses helped to carry prices higher. The better tone was well maintained, the closing hour bringing prices to the highest level of the day. Fentures of strength were the I'nlted States Steel shares, Pennsylvania, Reading, Southern Pacific and Chicago A North western. A noteworthy feature was the strength of Americans on the Ixindon curb, following the closing of the regular msrket there. German banking Interests were reported to have purchased round amonuts of Erie Issues, as well as Japanese bonds. A reflection of existing mercantile conditions was found In the semi-annual statement of the Associated Merchants' company, which operatea a number of drj" goods stores in this and adjacent cities. Its surplus for the period shows an Increase of 3215.000. Another heavy transfer of cash to Chicago was reported todav, making a total of 83.000,000 shipped to that center during the month. The bond market advanced In sympathy with the rise In the Japanese governments. Total sales, par value, r.OLXl.OOO. I'nlted States bonds were all unchanged on call. The receipts were some fifty cars lighter than last Tuesday and lit cars heavier than the corresponding day laxt year. The quality of the cattle was verv good. There were only a few native steers on sale, the receipts being made up mostly of westerns of very good .quality. There was a good strong demand from all sources and on the opening trading was active. Buyers wanted the cattle and went after them from the start, so that a fair clear ance was made In good season. The na tives were In best demand and were picked up first at fully steady prices and In some cases the best kinds went at a little higher prices. Western cattle were by no means overlooked, but were picked up st about steady prleon. After buyers had their more urgent orders filled they slowed un some and trading was not so active on the close. Cows and heifers were also In good demand and trading In this division was active on the start, but slowed up toward the close and the market held fully steady all through; In some cases the sales were higher. Bulls, veal calves and stags were In about the same notches as yesterday, prices being steady. There was a good supply of stockers and feeders here and an equally good strong demand for the cattle. There were plenty of feeder buyers In sight and there was considerable activity to the trade. Prices were generally steady, but on some of the choice heavy cattle sales weie made at higher prices. The equolltv of the receipts was good and about ohe-hnlf of the offer ings consisted of iambs. The stuff arrived In pood season end salesmen gt to work early. Advices from eastern points showed a lower market, but this did not affect prices here to any extent. The market was In satisfactory condition and the same good demand that has been noted for some time was In evidence again today. Buyers wa'tted supplies, but were a little sluw about liking hold. The general mar ket could best be quoted as being slow but sternly. There was little or no activity displayed st snv time, but the sheep wero picked t-p right along There were plenty of feeder buyers In the big barn this morning, but the supply of ffeder sheep was very small snd csmn nowhere near meeting the requirements of the trado.
