Aug. 28-The heaviness and Irregularity of today's stock market may be ascribed to several circumstances, any one of them more or less plausible. If not entlrly logical, our market and those abroad derived hut scant comfort from the situation at Portsmouth, consils at Lon don snd rentes at Paris shading some, while further pretext to sell here was found In the latest demands of the head of the an thracite miners' union and the widely her alded utterances of a New England ope rator who todiiy resumed his attacks upon the copper stocks. It Is noteworthy that the coal shares and Amalgamated Copper were materially lower. To the foregoing conditions should be added a decided ten- encv to the hardening of monev rates and a further drain by the west upon local fln- nclal resources. I he reaction lonay ap parently had the tacit. If not open, sym pathy of strong Interests, as shown In the tiscnce or support at the most, critical stages of the eary session. Initial prices tnrougnour tne active nsi were lower. Including In addltloD to Head ing and the other coalers I'nlon Pacific, Missouri raclflc. St. Paul. Atchison. Penn- ylvenla and Canndlan Pacific. On the other hand, gains were made by Metropolitan Street Railway, Metropolitan Securities and Pacific Mall, the latter making a new high record. The list rallied feebly In the first hour, such support as the market received mlng . from the western commission houses. Operators tested the market by switching from one group to another, but finding little demnnd for their offerings. turned sellers agnln, the list going lower hon nt the opening. The chief points of weakness at this luncture were Reading which fell 3 points, St. Taul 4; Great Northern preferred 3. and New Tork Cen tral 2V4. the balance of the list trailing along at recessions of 1 to 2 points. One of the few conspicuous exceptions was Re public iron prererred which advanced on news of the resumption of dividends, and was taken by commission houses hitherto prominent In that issue. The absence of any marked selling pressure steadied the market In the early afternoon, but the trading then been me more narrow and dull. Buying of I'nlon Pacific which sent It above Snturday's closing attracted some attention among traders, who followed the movement with rurcnases of Reading and other active Issues until many of the early aecnnes nan neen recovered. The closing was firm nn influencing factor being the news that Japan had agreed to waive her claim to Indemnity, and a re turn of call monev to last week's rates Ijondon's moderate sales here were largely caused bv home demands to meet tumor row's fortnightly settlements. Among the oay s railway returns was mat or . nicago & rsortnwestern. whose preliminary state nient for the fiscal year showed but a slight Increase of net Income over the previous year. Reports of gross returns for July by a number of minor lines were about equally divided as to losses and gains. lionds were irregular. Total sales nar value S2.685.0iW. SHEEP For some time past the offerings nave cons sted mostly of Kiuer suui nu fepilvr bllveirn werei rntnnelleil to be SatlS fled with vorv llariit a, , tit, Ilea hardlv enough to make a test of the market on the differ ent days. But u"dsy conditions were re versed and the most of the thirty-seven cars received wore feeder sheep and lambs. The offerings were of prelty good quality and there was an active tone to the trade all through the morning. Feeder buyers were after the stuff from the start ana bought It up In fslr season at good, strong prices. Killer buyers also evinced consid erable Interest In the fat stuff and were getting a line on the receipts while sellers were sorting. Trading on these kinds was a little slow In opening on account of tho shaping up necessary, but as soon ss the stuff was ready to show buyers were ready to take on supplies and the general trade In this division was also active and prices ruled general strong, with some sales look lug a dime higher.
