MATCHES GET DOWN TO SECOND ROUND
Preliminaries and Flrat Round Sent
Off In Qnlck Time, to Delight
of All In Spite of
Long- List.
Many games were played Monday In the
Middle West Tennla tournament at the Field
club under the auspices of the United States
National Lawn Tennis association, nearly
all of tho matches In the preliminary, first
and second rounds being run off.
The large number of entries Is the pride
of the committee, there being but forty
two entries In 1902, forty-five In 190S. forty
five In 1904 and sixty-six this year. The
seven courta were kept busy from early
morning yesterday and the weedtng-out
process waa run off fast. Now the better
matches are coming on, as the number of
players la reduced and only the higher
clasa remains. The Idea of the manage
ment of Inviting the public free to the
tournament la meeting with great favor
all over town and fhe gallery Is much
larger than ever, with the prospects of the
space at the disposal of the spectators be
ing all utilized before the week la out.
Hughea and Gllman put up the moat In
teresting match of the day. as the play
waa even. The placing of Gllman waa
beautiful and his running to the net waa ao
skillful that Hughes was unable to dis
place him, and by this he won.
Praise for the management was heard on
all sides for the finesse and speed with
which the various matches were run off,
there being no waits nor delays and the
seven courta were filled moat of the time.
The apectatora are picking the wlnnera now
and the cracka are watched wth intereat
whenever they appear. Although the Iowa
boya pick Hayes aa winner In the singles,
the other well known players still have
plenty of followers.
