WHALE WITH BROKEN HEART
Tall Tale of a Sea Captain's Fxperl
enre vrlth a ltl Mother
They were talking about whales, and thst
one m particular sighted by the Angler last
"Well, I've saw flsh as'd heat that thar
girl all hollow. Why, she wouldn't oil a
boot 'longslde that lass we prodded off
Franchman a bay--sn H was winter, at
that!" It was Captain Ben Franklin Jones
who was talking. Captain Jones la a salt
who has weathered many a gule, but who
now finds supreme comfort In watching a
quiet gnme not far from the Battery.
"It was dead winter." he went on. "n
star'd us on the bow I mean our face; we
were doln' a bit In the pirate business then,
an' we didn't care a snuff who she wus. so
as th' wlmmln falka and the small kinds
didn't suffer. Wal. It was a dull day; th.tr
wasn't a thing doln'. as you shore fellnws'd
say. We said to the cap'n: 'Cap'n. let's
heave to. It s dum late, dura coM. an' there
ain't nothing In sight.'
"We wax turnln' off the chsnnel into the
bay. the bow facln' dead to the landln',
when we run dead agin a rock, as we sup.
posed. Our boat trembled like a maid when
she's made love to the first time. She
wanted to careen, like a sailor as has too
much on board.
" "Wal. durn my eye. If thar ain't a
blower,' our cap'n yelled to us.
"Y can bet all y'r loose change w for
got Scotch that minute. The sea wag
treacherous, an' runnln' dead agin a hlowrr
was morn'n bigger ships could stand. But
thar she wus; we could see nothing of her
hut her Mg humped back sttckln" above the
water .and she -blowln' off steam like a
man-o'-war when she's hurt. Our ship
stuck agin her, an' she rocked like she wus
In pain. Then the blower hlowed like It
was Judgment day; then she stopped. The
crew got on the lower deck and prodded
her right on the shoulders. She never
moved. We got out of her way, then made
straight for the landln'.
"The next day we put out again to sea If
we could find the whale, and, so help me.
thar she lay, her back still stlckin' up. We
got help and pulled her ashore as pretty
a girl a you ever clapped your lights on.
Why, she war ninety feet to the tall, and
with Jaws that'd make a man-o'-war shake.
But she warn't dangerous, for ahe wss a
deader. Yep, she was dead. ' And, say,
what'd you suppose killed that thar girl?
Why, she broke her heart, that thar whale
"How do I knowt Why. say. boys, when
we stretched that thar girl out on shore
the wind wtu blowln' fit to tirealt the
weather machine. We built a fire and wus
warmln' ourselves, when a mate said:
" 'Listen. D'ye hear snmethln' blowln'?'
"An' we listened. And. say, we heard
something blowing sort o' Ilk a kid when
It's hungry. Wal; durn me If I didn't go
over and pat that dead girl on the back and
say. 'Wal, little girl, what's up, anyhow?'
"Then I happened to lift one of her big
flappers, and, say, boys, what d'ye think?
Thar lay a little girl of a whale, her nose
rammed right Into the old girl's side, an'
she was a-slghln' as a kid thafa after
milk, an' she stuck to the old gal, tight!
"Then we knnw'd what did It.. The old
girl was teachln' the little girl to paddle
her own canoe when she rammed agin our
bow. Wal. that vexed her. Then the little
girl was a yellln' like a kid, and then we
prodded her on a soft spot. She wui too
weak to fight an' the blow sort o' careened
her. an' wal. she lay thar with her little
girl and Just broke her heart en account
of leavln' her. Whales ain't got many
friends In the deep, an' the old Rlrl knowed
It, an' that broke her heart," New YorF
"Beg, pardon, but are you a waiter?" -
"Not a guest T"
'What are you then?"
"Oh, I'm only the man who Is giving the
party." Cleveland Plain Dealer.
