movement of prices on the stock exchange
and the stocks affected had more Influence
by sympathy on the general list thr.n
those which moved yesterday. The mar
ket nevertheless continued spotty and un
even and showed moderate Improvement in
the volume of trading.
For some time after the opening there
was a broad and active market which
enabled traders to operate In and out
with facility, and which swept up a fur
ther large volume of sales to realm
profits without any notable effect on the
price level. This was the period of the
trading which demonstrated the growth of
the outside Interest In the market, such as
It is. lxndon discounts hardened again
today and buying fur account of that
center was not In evidence in the ab
sorptive power of the market. " There was
a marked decline In animation after the
working off of orders accumulated over
night In commission houses. The market
then relapsed Into its professional char
acter and gave evidence of renewed opera
tions by that element to get up prices
here and there to serve as Sustaining
points while similar measures were ex
tended to other portions of the list. En
couragement to continue these efforts to
get prices still higher comes largely from
the contemplation of the favorable general
conditions and prospects In the country.
There Is some revival however of stories
of deals and of combinations surrounded
with more or less mystery after the man
ner of the stories which are most effective
on sentiment at times of speculative excite
ment. -The vitality of such rumors re
garding the Northern Securities group
seems proof against all delays and dis
appointment. Its renewed Influence was
seen today In the rise In Cnlon Paclflo
which would benefit largely from the en
hanced valuation of tireat Northern arel
Northern Pacific.
The diminution In the fever cases at
New Orleans was of cheerful augury for
the southern group, which however has
been singularly Indifferent heretofore to the
possible barm to the earning capacity from
the yellow fever outbreak. News from
the crops showed no change In the favor
able progress In the grain region with
the exception of some professed uneasiness
over the effect on corn of low temperature
and possible frosts in the northern por
tions of the belt. The corn products stocks
had the benefit of the reported ending of
the severe competition In the glucose mar
ket. The rise In the locomotive stocks had
a sustaining effect in the equipment group.
The large demand for Amalgamated cop
per after Its prolonged Inertia removed one
of the repressive influences on the market
but the United States steel stocks re
mained Impassive. The argument In favor
of low priced stocks centered its benefit
on ' Chesapeake A Ohio. The market
broadened materially In the late trading
and the closing was distinctly strong.
Honds were Irregular. Total sales, par

prices were a shade lower on Dotn tne
nutlve and western stuff. The corn led
cattle are getting scarce and no one Is
looking for heavy runs or tnese Kinas.
There has been an unusual number ot na
tives marketed already this season. On
these good corn feds, prices were a little
weak and the commoner grades were lower.
The westerns make prices lower on the
common native cattle as they come in
competition With them. Sellers did not
have their stuff ready to show early and
little waa done till alter 10 o'clock. Trading
was sluw and dull ana mere v. tut at a
tone all through the morning. Western
cattle was just about steady on the good
grades, but lower on the common stuff.
The cow and heifer trade suftered again
today and conditions were adverse to sell

oflered, but the most of them were westerns,

SHEEP There wss a pretty good run of
about twentv-eiaht cars
being offered. The stuff was late In arriv
ing and came etiaggling In a luad or two
at a time all the morning. Only about one
half of the receipts was In the barn by 11
o'clock and this tact made It bad for sales
men and made the market slow and draggy.
The receipts were nearly all killers and tha
feeder buyers faced another dy when they
could do little or nothing. The same good,
strong demand that haa been In evidence
here for some time was In force again to
day, and prices were stronger. Trading
was active and It was evident thst buyers
were anxious for supplies.
There were plenty of feeder orders In the
barn, but the receipts did not come any
where near meeting the requirements of
the trade.

HOGS There were about 123 cars on sale
today, which was all that was needed and
a little more. The receipts yesterday were
liberal and no one seemed anxious for the
supplies. Chicago reported a heavy run
ant- conditions were adverse to selling
Interests, which fact affected prices here.
S !rra at this point found snot her hard
market to work on and conditions were
against them. Packers were poor buyers
and there was little snipping a--iiian- The
oiwnli.g trade was very slow and dull, and
very liltlo was done early Packers were
bearish and asked conceslons. Good, light
hugs did not show as much loss as the
packing grades, but the general market
was 6I1IOC lower tha nesterday. the bulk
of the n.,g selling at xa.TS'oo.io.
