Burlington lines In Nebraska to Join with
the Denver. Enid & Oulf In Oklahoma.
This line IK said to be to connect the north
lines of the Harrlman system with the
southern lines and still the report says
that it is to connect 'with the Burlington
lines. .
When General Manager Mohler of the
Union raclflc was asked concerning the line
he sold: "I read of that proposed line In
the Chicago papers Tuesday evening and,
while I know that some such line has been
projected for sometime, I personally think
there le nothing In it. If I was asked to
express an opinion concerning It I would
ay there Is nothing in ."
Ta Offset Another War.
To prevent a repetition of the slaughter
ing of grain rates which was experienced

eastern and gulf roads are meeting In Chi
cago this week. Last year the grain was
moved without much profit to anyone, and
as thla year's crop is sure to be a bumper,
the railroad traffic managers are striving

a little money for the railroads on the
business. Last year the Missouri Paclfia
made a through rate from Omaha to for
eign ports, so there was nothing to show
what division was made of the rate and
what per cent the railroad company re
ceived. The grain came In so fast that the
road could not handle It and at one time
the Burlington was asked to handle 8X)
cars between Omaha and Kansas City to
help out of the difficulty, It Was thought
the share of the Missouri Pacific was about
It or 11 cents. The rate la now 18 cents to
the gulf, and the managers will strive to
maintain that rate.
Railway Notes and Personals.
A tourist car Is run each Saturday night
ffom Omaha to Clear Lake over the Chi
cago Great Western.
James W. Alexander, former president
of the Equitable, will pasa through Omaha
on the morning of August 24 ivi a private
car with a party 6f ten, en route to the
west over the Unlun Pacific,
Motor ear No. 1 of the Union Pacific
will be put into regular service August
26 between Kearney and Callaway, nlxly
flve miles. The car is being repaired at
the shops at Grand Island and will be
given a good trial a regular aervice.
Tho Chicago Great Western will run
a special excursion next Saturday from
Omaha to Clear Lake for 13 for the round
trip. The . train will leave at 7:40 In the
morning and the tickets will be good re
turning until the following Monday.

Of the Union Pacific with heiidiiuarters at
Des Moines, Is in the city after a roundup
of the Iowa Grand Army ft the Republic
business for the Milwaukee and Union. Pa
cific. The special Milwaukee train will
cross Iowa September 1 and will consist of
twelve sleepers, two chair cars and a bag
gage car. The train will . go direct to
Cheyenne and permit the tourist to partake
In the Frontier day festivities at that place
and then will run on to Denver. The
South Dakota delegation will Join at
Omaha, and the Iowa section Is going out
two days ahead of the regular business to
avoid the crush of travel.
Next Monday will be Burlington night at
the Den and emissaries of the Knights of
Ak-Sar-Ben and of the Burlington road
arc out on the line working up the big
excursion of the season. Special Are will
be provided at the Den and the boys from
the South Platte country will be shown
a warm time. A rate of one fare plus
(0 cents has been made- Special arrange
ments have been made from Nebraska
City, Schuyler, Mindnn, Norman, Columbus,
Ord, Btromsburg, Brownvlile, Red Cloud,
Wymore and all intermediate points. The
tickets are good returning any time the
next day.

Shortage Has Not Yet, hat Threatens
Delay Work by the
City.
Shortage of materials, especially crushed
tone, threatens to delay paving and side
walk work in Omaha. Band and brick
are the other thing necessary to construct
ing that are hard to get owing to the im
mense amount of building In the city.
The Barber Asphalt company, which will
not be hampered so much by the shortage
of stone, .because it uses mostly slag from
tne smelter in itsi paving bases, will start,
work on numerous 'Omaha contracts Fri
day. Expert paving gangs and apparatus
are on the way from Marshalltown and
other parts of Iowa and If arrangements
go well operations will push off on Twenty
sixth street between Capitol avenue and
Chicago street."
Laborers for paving work can be had
with littut difnculty in Omaha, but ex
perts are scarce. John Grant had to send
to the eastern states to get a man to oper
ate hi steam roller and some of the other
oontraotfrs are scouring the country for
men wha understand concrete and paving
work. .,
