Much Interest waa shown In the corn mar ket today. 6lnc the general rains Saturday and Sunday In Nebraska, Kansas, Iowa and Jlllnola, It la aald that the corn crop is now an assured success, barring the advent of early f rosin. The rain came In almost every section where It waa needed. Thera waa a lower tendency to the market on tnis account, but It waa balanced some what by bod news from Roumanla and Hungary. September closed at 62c!, old September at 63c, December at 44o, old December, at ViS-0So and May at 44 Wheat opened higher on rains In the harvest fields of the southwest, bat offer ings were heavy at the opening figures and ine market ten neiow yesterday about . Rroomhall says the British harvest Is In full Mast and the weather la Improving It la expected thst there will be a yield of fully 16.uu0.000 bush als more than last vear. Tha world's shlnments of wheat last Week were 7.588,0") bushels, against 9.0O0.OU0 bushels the week before and 8.84.0nO bush els last year. It savs news of the Hungarian and Roumanian corn crop Is so unfavorable that the Cnlted Htates would be without competition for the winter months, even If the Chleaao nrlce should advance 5 cents New York nas a winter wheat crop of 10.311iOn bushels, agntnst 8,352. CHICAGO, Aug 14 Prevailing belief that a large crop Is virtually assured resultej In a weak market here today, for which the close showed a net loss of IV for Sep tember. Corn Is down Uo. Oats are oft fj.e. Provisions are practically un changed., except ribs, which are up l'vaic. Soaking rains In tha spring wheat coun try where dry weather Is needed for tint finishing and harvesting of the crop gave the wheat market a semblance of strength at the start. Minneapolis quotations cams strong. September prices at tha opening showed t?c to ''ic advance at 81ir 81c. Subsequent news afforded little sup port for the upturn, however, and early buyers began to liquidate. As a result Sep tember receded to sjiH'i"c. A rally oc curred late In the session, due chiefly to shorts covering on a report of Improved export business. September closed easy at Clearances of wheat and flour were equal to 66,C6 bu. Primary receipts were LUi.t") bu., compared with 1.348,(M bu. a year ago. Minneapolis, Duluth and Chicago re ported receipts of 3 cars, against 491 cars last week and 3.(4 cars a year ago. The corn market was affected by wet weather prevailing throughout the south west, which has seemingly broken the drouth and silenced reports of crop dam age. September opened '(!'; lower, at o2fTf3c. but subsequently rallied to 53o under organised buying by commission houses. Country acceptances were heavy. Nearly every elevator concern appeared to have quantities to sell on the basis of old September. Imgs were also free sellers. I'nder these Influences the effort to bolster up prices failed. September sold off to BITS'', closing easy at 68c. Local receipts were Z14 cars, 114 being of contract grade. Oats exhibited an undercurrent of steadi ness at the outset, but succumbed at length to the Influence of decline In other grains. Heuvy receipts also had a depressing effect. I racing was quiet, the feature being the buying of September and selling of Decem ber by cash houses. September closed weak at 26o, after ranging between ic und 2f.e. Ixtcal receipts were 442 cars. The heaviness In grains waa communi cated to the provisions market, but after yielding a trifle, offerings beoanie mat and business dragged Ribs alone were In de mand and snowed a marked gain. An ad vance of 5c In live hogs caused a slight ad vance at the start. September pork closed unchnnged nt $14.27. I.ard wns up a shade at $7 X"'i7 2. Rib were l'"i12Vi:C higher at . evVti. 70. SEW YORK STOCKS AND BONDS Marktt Opeoi Aotbe nd Prioei Ad'noe , to Higher LereL LARGE SELLING ON PROFIT TAKING Demand from Outside Snfflcleni to Offset This In Ksrly Dealings Prices Decline, bnt Advance Again Later. NEW TORK. Aug. 14 The speculative forces which developed In last week's stock market gathered energy for a rush with the opening of the week, which swept the wnolo of the early market to a higher ievei oi prices j ne verv large selling to take proms which the market had to en counter here Increased In effeet as the day progressed and gave the latter market some appearance of weariness, but there was no mistaking the Increased force of the miscellaneous outside demand coming from various sources through commission houses, which made Itself manifest In the accumulation of iHrge buvlng orders over Saturday. The sufficiency" of this new de mand to absorb the large selling to taae profits was a matter of satisfaction to the advocates of an advance In prices. The quietness of the later demand, however, showed that the accumulated orders at the opening were not followed up In equal volume. The professional element wns left rather obviously to take the market In hand again. This thev did bv the renewal of last week's tactics of successive ad vances here and there In the market The volume of high priced stocks continued largely in evidence, but some of those which figured most conspicuously lust week were somewhat reactionary. The day s dealings, which made on the whole a broad and effective market, were based on the general considerations which were already making themselves felt last week. Principal of these Is the outlook as defined by last week's government re port. Day to day reports of weather con ditions, keep up the feeling of confidence In. the prosperous outcome of the grain crops. Railroad officials In the customary weekly reviews published today spoke of the widening effect through all fines of business, of the cheerful outlook over the crops, and Indulged In some very roseate VlewH of the nroRoeotlve rntlrond esrnlncrs for the next fiscal year. Confidence Is grow ing in tne unprecedented yield of the corn crop, and the corn grangers came Into be lated tirominence In the later hi, lira r.t tn. day s market. A good effect was produced by the report that the dispute over freight rates on certain articles as between the Atlantic and the gulf lines had been set tled and the cutting of rates done away with. Some attention was riven to the aiur. tlons that American bankers were twino sounded with a view to sharing In a Rus sian loan. The flotation of a Russian loan somewhere Is regarded as a neces sary consequence of a peace treaty, and tho distributive effect In all the world's money markets of such a flotation leaves the question of the point chosen rather secondary In Imnortanee. so far the enect on money rates Is concerned Tha deposit of 86HI.OOO at the sub-treasury for i'it'iUMiiU iransier to i mcago marks tne running or tne tide of the currency move ment in favor of the Interior as aaalnst New York, which was already ahlftlnsr lust week. The forces which will decide the course of the autumn money markets are thus definitely at work. Stocks made sub stantial recovery late In the dav, the corn grangers again leading, but the persist ence of the selling to realize made the closing irregular. jKiiKis were irregular. The receipts show a gain of about thirty two cars as compared with last Monday, but were somu lighter than the receipts of he same duy a year ago. The offerings were for tho most purt westerns, there be ing but few corn feds on sale. There were some pretty good western Bteers on sale and there were some good buyers for the best kinds. The heavy re ceipts hnd a tendency to make trading rather draggy and the cattle did not change very fast. Western cattle coming In com petition with the half-fat and warmed-up corn feds make prices on thoso kinds a lit tle lower. There Is a smaller number of westerns coming and on many days more good corn-fed cattle than la usual at this time of year. The market today was Just about steady on the good kinds, but there was an undertone of weakness to the trade, and anything half fat or warmed up or common changed hands at prices a shade lower. There was very little activity dis played, although buyers were picking up the cattle right along. The good feeling that prevailed last week on she uluff was not in evidence today and sellers were unable to hold their cows and heifers up to steady prices. The very beat kinds were a shade lower and from that to 10c lower on the commoner grades. Busi ness In this division was dull and trading slow. Hulls were lower today, but vcnl --'ves and stags held about steady with la Fri day. There was a good supply of stockers and feeders and the same good demand that has been In evidence for the past week. Good heavy feeders were steady with the close of last week, but the lighter weights were not In as good demand as the heavy stuff and were lower. Artlcles.l Open. Hlgh. Low. Close.
