In two gruelling games, n which hits re plentiful and " egoltement Intense, Omaha and Sloug City broke even on a double-header at Vlntnn Street park Satur day afternoon before a crowd of S.ooo peo ple, .Including; the Voice and Voice No. 2, which Is a good second to the original "Can't put m over." Eddie Quirk and Jarrott were the oppos ing slab artists In the opening performance. Quick started out like a race horse, while Jarrott was hatted all over the lot, but matters ware soon reversed. Three runs were made by the Champa In the first In ning and two In the second and they died. , Six hits ware Used up In making these five tallies and but three more came dur ing the remainder of the game. Sioux City made a single off Quick In he first Inning, but Sheehan was caught In an attempt to steal second, and no more were made until the fourth, when Mr. Quick was pounded unmercifully all over the lot and on the shins. Onalana-ht on Quick. 'The Inning started with an error by Dolan. which gave Pulslfer a life, and hen came Nobllt with a double, Newton with a triple, O'Hara with a single and Btarnagle with a single, which, coupled with an error by Quick, brought In the fourth run. Jarrott, the next man up, hit a corker, which landed right on the shin of Mr. Quick and bounded over to first, where Thomas made the first putout of the Innlr.g. Qultk was put out of service by the blow and retired In favor of Mr. Hall, who was quite effective, but who was not bricked up by his tr animates In a manner calculated to win ball games. Six errors were made by the Champs, and these were largely responsible for the loss of the game. Two more runs were made by the Sioux in the fifth Inning on two singles by Weed and Tulslfcr and an error by Dolan. Thirl opened the game for Omaha with a double and Carter singled; Dolan followed with a double, which scored his predeces sors; Welch struck out; Schlpke walked, and Thomas bunted safe, filling the bases. Martin flew out to O'Hara and Oondlng was given four wide ones, which scored Dolan. Good Day for Home Bans. Thiel struck out a an opener for the second Inning; Carter hit for a double, and then Joe Dolan hit the ball over the left-field fence for a home run. Omaha went after the second game right at the start, Just as it had the first, but the players were able to hold on to this one. ThJel singled, and then when Carter attempted to sacrifice him to second the Sioux went up In the air and Thiel was across the home plate before they had settled down. A play was pulled off at this stage which Is no seen very often on any grounds and especially on grounds as large as the Vinton Street park. Dolan hit the ball over the left-field fence for a homer and was followed by Welch, who placed It safely over the right-field fence. Freese singled In the second Inning, Thiel singled. Carter walked ant then Jarrott, who was pitching the second game as well as the first, hit Dolan with a fast one and forced Freese across the plate. In the fourth Thiel singled and was sac rificed to second by Carter and forced out at third when Dolan hit to Sheehan,- Dolan going to second on the play, from which point he scored on Welch's single. Welch hit for a triple In the seventh and was brought home by Schlpke's double, when the rain came down In such torrents that Bobby Curuthers felt Justified In call ing the game to an end. Sioux City made two runs in the seventh Inning of the second game off three hits, but the result, was never In doubt. Attend ance, 3,000. Score, first game: SIOUX CITT. AB. R. H. PO. AVERAGES OF THE OMAHA TEAM Batting- Shows a Gala and Fleldlng a Slight Falling; Off. Nine games were reeled off last week, Just to show that the Champions are not afraid of hot weather, and the general bat ting of the team shows a decided improve ment as a result. Some sloppy work in the field marred the brilliant record tha team has been making, and while tho aver age Is still high, It is a point lower than It was last week. Of the nine games played Omaha won, five, and lost three of the others through careless work in the field. Buck Thiel has been the bright particular utnr nt the evoplr. Ha was at bat thlrtv- four times In the nine games, and I whanged out fourteen safe hits, running up to as much as a three-bagger, an aver age for the week of .412. This brings Buck's average for the season up to the top mark for the regulars. Another feature was Harry Welch laving off for the first time this season, he being lifted out of the Den ver game, after letting Perrlne's hit get away from him. Welch did some fierce hit ting In the four games with Sioux City, cracking out nine safeties In seventeen times up, an average of .529 for the serlea The figures for the team up to date are; BATTING AVERAGES.
