about ISO per cent heavier than last year.
Primary wheat receipts were M&.OOo bushels

of 623,(i0 hushnls. t:orn receipts were
4u4.i00 bushels and shipments 413.000 bushels,
against receipts of Sii,) bushels last year
and shipments of 26.000 bushels.
Cash wheat continues to be picked up by
the millers and elevator Interests at all
points. Probably the strongest factor In
the wheat situation Is that the new crop
year was entered with old supplies practic
ally exhausted. Consumption of the new
crop started Immediately and although the
southwestern and Chicago markets, as well
s Minneapolis, have received a large
amount of winter wheat, the accumulation
has been very slow.
J. A. Kankln, a big Chicago trader, says
that while the government report is bear--Ish
enough on Its ftice, it is far below
the real facts. "The I'nlted 'Slates has
produced a crop of 750,000,000 bushels of
wheat," said Mr. Rankin. "The Canadian
northwest has raised about lOO.Oi 0.000 bushels
and Ontario has the biggest crop In Its
history. Threshing returns from the north
west Indicate that all of the crop esti
mates heretofore have been too low.
Wheat that was expected to thresh out
twelve to fifteen bushels to the acre Is
producing eighteen to twenty-five bushels."
Kansaa has a bumper corn crop, the gov
ernment report suggesting 250 .000,000 bushels.
Beoretary Coburn of the State Hoard of
Agriculture says the corn crop of Kansas
win arouna 2io.iiw.wu Dusncin, asmui.
182,000,000 bushels last year. Many fields
will run 75 to lilO bushels to the acre, lie
aays. The seaboard sold loo.ono bushels of
corn yesterday, mostly for nearby shipment,
and reported the foreigners slow bidders.

NEW YORK. Aug 11. A material broad
ening out In speculation was asgradual pro
cess in today s stock market, the early
trading showing only Irregular strength und
considerable hesitation. The growth In
speculative confidence had as Its underlying
basis the government report on the condi
tions rif the grain crops, but even amongst
the railroad stocks Immediately affected
by the promise of great crops to be moved,
the early movement was Irregular apd halt
ing. The corn araniter seemed notably le-
luctatit to move, In spite of the stress laid
upon tho promise of a bumper corn crop
The character of the advices which went
out of Wall street last night In the shape
of letters and telegrams from commission
houses, based on the returns of the grain
crop, were calculated 40 excite speculative
activity, and these had their effect in the
trading. ' Before the day was over the 'ir
regular character was repaired to a large
extent, and the fairly comprehensive ad
vance had been achieved by the process of
rotation from one point In the market to
another. High priced Investment stocks
were, still a feature, and the sensational
movements in this class exceeded If) number
and extent nnythlng wMnessed in the stock
market within the memory of man. These
feverish movements were still suspected to
be of manipulative origin. But the dltll
culty of operating in such mercurial securi
ties on any ordinary marginal transaction,
and Uie enormous resources required for
their actual 'taking up in such, volume as
the transactions of yesterday and today
rfpresent, added to the mystery Of th-J
movement. Ita demonstrations of the tena
cious hold of owners on' these shares even
at the phenomenal price levels maintained.
was taken as evidence, of strqng contldence
In futuia values.
Foreign markets were watched with at
tention for an indication of the probable
lutoome of the peace conference at Ports
mouth. The stock markets abroad mani
fested no uneasiness, but the sharp advance
In Sterling Exchange at Paris was indi
cative of A purpose to accumulate further
reserves there. Discount rates hardened
In London in response, and the forelan cx-
ch&ngo rate advanced here also. The local
money market was totally unaffected. Tne
estimates of the currency movement for
the week were also significant as showing
for the first time this season that the banks
have lost cash to the Interior on the bal
ance of the movement. The amount seems
to be small, and even added to the Weck'a
absorption by sub-treasury operations the
errect on tne bank reserve to be shown in
tomorrow's weekly statement Is not ex
pected to be lareje. The usual profit taking
on the day's advance unsettled the late
market, but there was rallies which carried
last prices for some stock to the highest
of the day, but left the closing tone Ir
regular.

CATTl-E Receipts of cattle were light to
day, even for a Friday, only forty-seven
cats being on sale. Tne He reclpts were
some thirty-nine cars heavier than last
Friday ana Just about the same as the
day last year. The offerings consisted
mostly of western cattlo and there were
only a few corn feds on sale. The' stuff
2 was or pretty good quality.
the llgnt receipts Tiad a tendency to make
a stronger feeling on the steers, and while
the market could hardly bo called active,
still buyers wanted some cattle and the
stuff was picked right along and a clearance
was made before midday. There were
some pretty good cattle offered and the
market was satisfactory. On the good
kinds prices were fully steady with yester
day and In a few cases sales looked
stronger. Commoner grades, as usual were
not in good demand and were slow in
moving at barely steady -rices.
There was only a srnu.ll supply of cows
and heifers on eale, but the good strong
demand for she stuff that hus been In force
for the past week was not in ' evidence
today. Ovliig to the light receipts prices
were not steady ou the choicer grades, but
there was an undertone of weaknesa all
through and trading was a little slow.
Common cows were not wanted very badly
and these kinds showed a slight decline.
Bulls, veal calves and stags ruled steady
with yesterday's prices and there was no
new features to the trade.
There was a good supply of atockers and
feeders here, considering the size of the
receipts and there was plenty to meet the
requirements of the trade. At the end of
the week yard traders do not try to do
much and there was only a fair call for
cattle In this division today. Prices were
weak; and trading was slow and dull.
This weakness Is no criterion of the market,
however, and there la a good strong de
mand for feeders from the country.
