TIIE OMATTA DAILY DEE: WEDNESDAY. AUOrST 9. 1003. CATTLEMEN MAKING GOOD Spooial Attorney Bush Eaji Thej Are Tetriof Down Illegal Tencei. SPIRIT OF DEFIANCE HAS 00ZE0 OUT Appearance of Deaaty ( nlttd Mates Marshals with Warrants to (fr Convinced Trripaiirri of Their Dancer. The office of the L'nlted States District Attorney li huslly engnged preparing; for th prosecution of the land fencing cases. K'-Jiorts are lwlng constantly received frm the, epeclal Mold agents, IjcFrecs. Chamhcrs and L'lxon, who are now operating In the Valentine district In Cherry county, and In the . North Platte district In Orant and Ieuel counties. A largo quantity of ma terial has already been rerelved and the preparation of the cases against the Illegal land fencers Is being pushed with all possi ble rapidity. "tS'c have relhiMe Information that the fence In McPherson county are coming down rapidly, aa a result of the Informa tion recently filed ngaltist the Reed and Miller ranchoa In that county," siild Spe cial Attorney Rush, Tuesday. "The cattlemen are beginning to see that the government does not Intend to trifle with them and consequently they are com ing to time. We have been visited by a number of ranchmen from other districts, particularly along the forest reservations, who have awakened to the fact that the government means Just what It says, and they have promised that their fences shall come down at once. Are Tearln Down Fences. "They are making good their promises, too, aa we are learning from the special agents In the field. They were at first dls jmscd to make a bluff at defiance, but when the deputy marshals appeared In the district with warrants for the arrest of Iteed and the Miller brothers they began to see that It was not a matter for child's play and they are falling over each other, so to speak, In clearing away their fences from the public lands. We expect to hear the same good report from the Valentine district very Boon. We have a large num ber of cases now about ready for trial. Some of them are equity cases that will bo brought directly to trial, while those of a quasi-criminal character will be re ferred to the grand Jury. "There la another feature of the cases pertnlnlng to certain landa that are tem porarily withdrawn from entry that the government will see are not wholly ap propriated by the big cattlemen to the exclusion of the small cattle owners. There are 2,000,000 or 8,000,000 of acres of these lands In Nebraska, and wherever there Is found to be a fence on them the parties building or controlling It will be brought to trial. "Another phase of the cases the govern ment Is also looking Into Is that of fraudu lent entry or filing. It has been found that much of this kind of work has been done, and where found the entries will be canceled and the guilty parties prosecuted for perjury." SOLDIERS G0T0 THEIR CAMP Three Companies of National Gaards Go to Annual Encampment nt Kearney. Three companies of soldiers from "Omaha left for the annual state encampment at Kearney Tuesday morning. They were: Company O of the Second Nebraska, known as the Omaha Guards; Company L. of the First Nebraska, known aa the Thurston Rifles and Company I of the First Ne braska, known as the Omaha light Infantry- The officers In charge of the Thurston Rifles were Captain Baehr, First Lieutenant Brown and Second lieutenant Burmelster; of the Omaha Light Infantry, Captain Kroeger, First lieutenant WHg and Second lieutenant Filer; and of the Omaha Guards, Captain Faulkner, First Lieutenant Hervey and Second Lieutenant Furay. Major Osborne, assistant adjutant general, accompanied the battalion, which occupied five coaches on the Union Pa cific. The school board at its meeting Monday night adopted plans and specifications for the erection of an additional room at the high school building, 36x feet in dimen sions, to be used as' a manual training room. The room will be erected over the engine room, which Is located between two wings of the building. The second story of the left wing Is now used as a manual training room, but the noise of the hammers annoys the pupils In the adjoining room and at the same time Is considered too small to care SOME GOOD TAN BARGAINS Oil THE BARGAIN TABLE We have taken from our stock a .lot of odds and ends and small sizes in ladies tan shoes and oxfords, and put them on the bargain table and put a price on thenthat is only a small part of their value. . SHOWS COMPLEXION OF THE TICKET Other Candidates for sheriff, but 1'reaeat Incumbent Seems to Tower Above Ills Oppo nents In Strength. Announcements for candidates for county office on the democratic side of the fence already give a. sort of an outline of what the democratic county ticket may look like this fall. It Is fairly well settled that Sheriff John Power will be renominated for a fourth term. A lot of othor democratic statesmen think they are cut out to be sheriffs, among them Tom Flynn, John Lid dell. Jailer Roach, the perennial Jim Con nolly, to say nothing of lesser lights, but the chances are they will all have to take a back seat for the present sheriff as the only mail whe has a record of success to stand on. For treasurer William Fleming, who has been drawing the salAry of city tax com missioner for six years, will be In the run ning for the democrats, the Idea of get ting O. Fred Elsasser to run again having been alianduned for various good and suf ficient reasons. Fleming, who was elected to his present office as a silver republican. Insists now that he Is a true-blue democrat and the abolition of the office of city tax commissioner would otherwise leave him without a Job. Woodrsnk a Sew Man. J. V. Woodrough Is booked to take the democratic nomination for county judge without a contest. Woodrough Is pretty new In Omaha as compared with some other democratic lawyers who have been hewing wood and carrying water lor the party for many years, but as the partner of W. F. Ourley he promises to bring with him the support of Ourley and his class of republicans, who are half democrats, and want this sop to hold them. County Clerk Drexel Is much In the same boat aa Sheriff Power and expects a re nomiiiatlon without hustling too hard for It. The democratic ticket without him, his friends Insist, would not look natural. Thesto four offices are ail the democrats will really fight for, although they UI probably put up candidates for the Teat of the ticket for fear they might be accused of running short of material. For police. Judge It la said that 8. 1. Gordon la figuring on another democratic nomination to help hUn back Into tne Job.
