Trade continues with Omaha Jobbers an It lias all the time thus far this year, earli week's bualneas being larger than for tha Ltne period of last year. Country mer- unta in town lor rail goods aay that in n-niiin mnniuim win connnim A good wheat crop has on which good prices are offered, and tae outlook for corn la fine. Hugar holds tha center of the stag with tho wholesale, grocers. Coffee Is also at tracting considerable attention. With the ' tlry goods people the main featups la tha rifKri fx-lce of cotton, and such a scarcity of goods that it is hard to insure prompt deliveries. Hardware and leather are quiet. In hardware circles, It I said that an ad vance In pig tin probably will make tin good higher at retail this fall. Omaha shoe manufacturers are lamenting the price they have to pay for leather. Hole leather is exactly GO per cent higher than it was last year. Local hounes are In the midst of their fall shipments nml 111 not be through shipping for six weeks. The traveling salesmen are all on their vacations. They will resume work about the middle of August for a short trip, and will then take another reft until time to start the campaign for winter goods. Sonar is I nchanged. For a wonder, sugar has remained un changed In price through the week, though Jobbers expect a change at any minute. There was u rnte cut last week from the. seaboard to Missouri river points, and It is probable that the cut will be extended to iioiivts west of the river. The freight rate war between the Atlantic terminals and the gulf roads has had a demoralizing effect on the market. Blocks are low and the .jobbers are afraid to buy any large quantity of sugar, thinking It possible that prices may sink lower. Itoasled coffees are up 4 cnt. and all coffees are strong. Sevens are 4 cents a pound now and firm at that figure. The crop movement so far at Klo and Bantos has been comparatively small. The Hrnill markets are steady and a few firm offers are bring made on too high a basis to at tract buyers. In cheese the tone Is very strong on fnncy grades and firm on other grades. Iicalera are taking so many large sizes for storage purposes that supplies in first hands have lecn greatly reduced. Heated stock Is causing some complaint and prices for such are merely the result of negotiation. Ran of Salmon Ileal na.. July 29 Alleged lack of dam age by runt caused weakness In the wheat market here today. At the close September delivery was off c , Corn Is up 4c Oats are down 4C l'rovlslons are practically unchanged. Weakness In the wheat market developed during the lust half of the day. Early In the s.sslon the market was quite firm on a fnlr demand froiTl commission houses. At the opening Peptembervwns 4o higher to So lower at &uV- With only light of ferings the price gradually advanced to 8;4c Numerous repot ts from the north wist telling of the condition of the spring sown crop were received, but these advices were very conflicting. One of the reports, however, attracted special attention and was the chief causa of heavy liquidation late In the session. This report was from a Chicago expert, who Is Inspecting the wheot llelds of North Pnkot.i. "Scarcely a trace of black rust end but a moderate i amount of leaf rust ' wns the substance of a dispatch from this authority. Reports of continued heavy primnry receipts helped to dislodge large quantities of long wheat. Total arrivals for the week were over 7,io. bushels, compared with 4.500,000 bushels the corresponding week last year. The market became ex'.remelv wcik during the Inst hour. rVptemtier declining to MSc. The close was practically at the lowest point of the day, tHial quotations on Pcptemlier being at S44c. Clearances of wheat and flour were equal to 22,5i4) bushels. I'rlmary receipts were 1.0K4.0I bushels, compared with 074.111 bushels a year ago. Minne apolis. Duluth and Chicago reported re ceipts of Mil cars, against 214 cars last week anil 22 cars a year ago. ) Corn, notwithstanding the b.eak In wheat Price, behl remarkably steady. I'rominent nulls were active purchasers of corn during the greater part of the session. Pit traders also were inclined to favor the bull side. The market closed firm. September opened 4c higher to 4c lower at MSo to t24 sold up to &ic and closed at 52 V. Local re ceipts were 2S8 cars, with Ho of contract grade. A depressing effect on the oats market re sulted from the weakness of wheat. In creasing receipts of new oats were an addi tional bearish factor. Furthermore, the grading showed some Improvement. The market closed at the lowest point of the day. September opened unchanged at 2Hc, sold between 'Sic and 2V and closed at 27v. c. Local receipts were 319 cars. Provisions were steady on fair support from packers. The spread of yellow fever In the south was a weakening Influence. It Is considered lomewhat uncertain whether the appear ance of the fish Is a "spurt" or the advance guard of the great body of salmon. On this uccount news from the straits will be anx- X loiiBly awaited. It Is believed that this late uppearance of 'he run will operate against a pack of 800 cases. Some even estimate that not I 'ore than 200.000 cases will be the pack this season, thla estimate being based on the capacity of the canneries during the curtailed period of operation. Allowing two weeks before the present run can reach the traps In the sound. It will be August 10 before the pack can begin In earnest. As the duration of the run Is problematical, the uncertainty Is a considerable factor to be reckoned with. Thus far the news has L had no effect on prices. There Is a. heavy I demand for salmon, especially Red Alaska. " Tim demand Is good for all kinds of fish, but especially for family whlteflsh,- though there has been no change In prices. The catch so far has been only about 60 per cent of what it was last year. Much higher prices prevail In Holland herring than last year. The catch this season Is short and no IIhIi will be offered until about the mid dle or September. The old stock Is Just about denned up. Telegrams from Glou cester report a free arrival there and at lioston of fresh mackerel. Salt mackerel Is steady. Norway 3's are a little firmer and there Is a fair demand for the Halifax fish. Codfish la firm. Drawn Cans Innatlsfactory. The sardine trade Is very active. The trade generally is expressing disapproval of ihe lightweight "drawn" cans, the full weight sardine cans having- given satlsfac-y-.tlon In all Instances. Tim Tow prices on ttiese "drawn" cans have made such a heavy sale that the company packing them has been flooded with orders and haa been forced to withdraw from the market. Canned tomatoes have been gradually marked up until now they are 16 cents u ii j n above the lowest point. In Mary laud there haa been very hot weather for ten days' and the tomato, crop la suffering, fanners anticipate an active market next fall, with the foreknowledge of the lightest buying of futures In many years. The new packing season for tomatoes opened la MaiUiiiore lam week In a quiet way. The lutu advances In prices are well sustained. Canned corn Is without material change. The. demand for California canned goods has been heavy, peaches particularly being in great demand. A large number or pack era have refused to accept orders for peaches alone, and very few ure offered at any price. The hot weather this year caused a large pack or low grade goods. Dried Frntts Active. .Almost everything In the line of dried trults for tail delivery bus been on tne boom tor too last few weeks. As It Is now, mills assert that prices will not go down below today's levnl for several months at least. The question of delivery Is becoming more serious than that of the price, as the manu facturers are so rushed that they are slow lu galling the goods to the Jobbers. Sltaatloa la Hardware. Testerday's re vival of speculative animation on the Stock exchange was fully maintained, although there was a good volume of business and some striking gains were recorded. The market showed the effect to some extent of tho desire to tnke pnitHs on the week's gains and the principal active stocks wcru not incnnea to advance witn vigor. 1 no news of the day was not Important and was of no apparent effect upon the prices. The net result of the week's operations on the surplus reserves of the banks was small, but this was due to the offsetting effect of some large changes In Individual Ite-ns. The $11.4)0.700 expansion In loans wa attributed largely to the taking over of loans by the banks from the trust com panies, an operation that nlways develops when the call loan rate offers no greater profit than the rate paid by banks to trust companies on their deposits. It la surmised, also, that the stirring of specu lative Interest In the Block market baa resulted In some Increase of borrowing for that account. The gain In cash of fc,942, "00 was much larger than expected and operated to conserve tho margin of the surplus. Weekly reports of the mercan tile agencies helped to foster the cheerful feeling over the business outlook which bns grown up In Wall street. A feature of the day was the new record price for Delaware, Lackawanna & Western at 41', accompanied by rumors of another Intended extra dividend on that stock. The receipts for the week show a iliht decrease as compared with last week and were much heavier than the same week last year, when the packing house iroumoa made receipts very uncertain. The quality of the offerings was very good. The market tor the week ciosea in gooo shape, the demand the latter part of the week was good and prices ruled higher. On the opening and earlier days of the week conditions were rather unfavorable and trading aloy. Packers claimed a poor outlet for dressed beef and were poor buyers. During the latter part of the week the receipts consisted largely of corn-fed cattle and grass stuff was scarce. For this reason the market on range cattle was a little stronger man tne ciose 01 last week. The good dry-lot beeves and cnoice grades of corn feds showed even a greater advance than this and the market for the week was strong to 10c higher. The warmed tin and only partly fatted stuff was In poor demand and was 104il5c lower for the week. The cow and heifer trade wns not quite as satisfactory as was the steer market. The Increased receipts of range cows had a depressing effect on grass natives and prices were lower, aooui kuioc wouiu cover the loss on tnese kinds, witn the market the first of the week slow. On the good corn-fed cows and heifers, which nave been getting scarc,e, prices held up pretty well and the market was lust about steady, but on the general run of stuff prices were at the decline noted above. Prices on bulls were off about as much as on steers, with the exception of fee Vr bulls, for which there was a good demand at steady prices. Veal rslves and stags showed little change and were just about steady. The supply of stockers and feeders was fairly good and there was a good demand all the week. Good heavy feeders were lo20o higher for the week, with the light and common grades ruling about steady. HOGS Tlire was only a light run here, about eighty-eight loads being on sale. With such ),lght receipts buyers started In early and, although prices ruled lower. there was considerable activity to the trade and a clearance was made In good season. Buyers paid little attention to weights or quality today and bunched the sales. Early advices from eastern points were discouraging and had a bear effect on the market here.
