CHICAGO GRAIS ASD PROVISIONS Fea tares of tfce Trading- and Closing Prlrea oa Bears of Trade. CHICAGO. July 28. A weak market here oday resulted from profit-taking, following rejxjrts of exoellent condition of winter wheat. At the close wheat for Peptemtier delivery was off lViftlSc. Corn Is down e. urns snow a loss of ftc. provisions are practically unchanged. Tiie wneat market was rather weak irom the start. Initial quotations on September eng a snane nigher to 1U'o lower ai imt Si17c. One factor that contributed to bear- sh sentiment was an Increase In local re ceipt, arrivals here today being 2l car, of which 92 cara were of contract grade, t'nder general selling September went off to t""ia. Sentiment then became bullish for a time and price made a fair recovery, tep tenibcr advancing to 87V The chief rea son for the upturn was a report made by a Minnenpoll crop expert regarding aamaga to spring wheat by black rust. This au thority summed up the situation by stating that the oron in the rust afflicted district I already reduced one-half, both In quality ana yield. Report from orner sources. however, save a more optimistic outlook for the new crop. The market soon experi enced a sharp break and for the remainder of the session extreme weakness prevailed. Additional reason for the weakness waa the liberal movement, primary receipt a being 1,239.000 buahels, compared with 693.000 a year ago. The market closed at tne low est point of the day, with September at Kc. Clearances of wheat and flour were equal to TS.Ofio1 bushel. Export for the week, as shown by Bradstreet's, were equal to Hrt4,0i)0 bushel. Minneapolis, Duluth and Chicago reported receipt of 126 car against 217 last week and 229 a year ago. r.xceueni crop prospeci cauea nesvy selling of corn, resulting In a weak market. Local receipt were 260 cars, with 64 of contract grade. ihe oata market waa innuencea 10 a great extent bv the weakness of corn and Wheat. Another factor, however, that bad weakening effect was an unexpected In crease In local receipt. The close wo s at the lowest point of he session. July 28 The creeping up ward movement of prices which haa been In progress for several davs flared ud Into a flash of speculative spirit todaar and the siot a market waa broader ana more ani mated than for a conslderble time. The sales effected In the two hours to noon equalled the maximum for a whole day re cently. Thereafter there was a decided falling off In activity and some hesitation In pursuing of the holding acquired In the early jart of the day. , The unward movement was not expected by any Immediate event and seemed to re sult rather from a crystallization of confi dence which haa been gathering from day to dav. The movement continued largely professional and there was evidence of ma nipulation here and there In the volatile rise of closely held stocks of which llttlo Increase of the supply In the market results from a bidding up of the price. The very large occasional transactions In some of the market leader of which tne market supply Is large also suggested a process of rhurnlna riestirneri for effect tinon the mice or upon the sentiment on observers ramer : ' nna, vre i . . v .. 1 ... 1 t -. L. ....... ' r.irt WnrtH limn iui inn auuuiiium imu in hm n. .,.,- i - v.. - w. ... mission houaea, however, reported an ap- rreclable Increase In orders from miscell aneous source, presumably of less highly speculative origin. The tone of the bond market was also senalbly Improved and the broadening of tne demand ror inveatment in inai Depart ment Is cmsidered of good augury. Of the high grade investment stocka ueiaware, Lackawanna & Western waa conaplcuous for an advance for a new record price at 404. The confident absorption of Illinois Central constituted an effective leadership for the market and this stock also touched record price at Ii5. Humor 01 a com bination with Vnion Pacific were held to account for the rise. There were some lag gard In the early movement among tne niot conspicuous stocks In the market, but most of these responded later to the pre vailing upward tendency and were effective In sustslnlng the tone of the market after the Influence of the earlier strong features had commenced to wane. The estimates of the week's currency movement show the running In favor or New York and mnnev rates remain easy. The advance In Ixmdon money rates Is at tributed to the month-end requirements ana foreign exchange waa weak here again, of ferings of bankers' bill against borrowing abroad forming a feature in that market. Attention ws attracted to the offer of the secretarv of the treasury to stimulate bank note issues by receiving Philippine bonds as security fon government deposits pro vided the government bonds released are to take out circulation. This la a reminder of the imminence of the crop-moving demands for currency and of the meagre resources of th. irmanrv for helnlns to supply the de mand In accordance with the custom of pre vious years. The market ciosea rainer quiet but firm. . . Bonds were strong. Total sale, par value, IJ.4E4.000. Tnlted States bonds were unchanged on call. No. 1 Rio, SHEEP With lighter receipts today there waa a better feeling in the sheep barn and while trading was alow and draggy and Price no better, packer seemed to want few sheep, which I more than could be aald for several day. There were only ten cara oil -alo and the quality waa tairly good. The market was alow In opening and very little waa done till well along toward the middle of the forenoon. Aa Soon aa the buyers and aellera got together however, the aheep changed handa some what freely and stuff was all cleared up before midday. There waa little change In the conditions that have been In force for several days, with the exception of the better feeling noted above. Price ruled Justabout steady with yesterday. Tnese re ceipts fall short of last Friday by about seventy cars and show a decrease of forty-' three cara as compared with u.e same day last year. The quality of the receipts was fairly good and consisted almost entirely of corn fed cattle. Owing to the light receipts, sellers had the advantage and there was a better demand than there has been for several days. Buyer wanted the cattle and there was considerable activity to the trade. - On the geneial run of steers the market was strong to 10c higher with the commoner kind ruling about steady. There is a better out look for beef and packers were better buy ers than they have been for several days. Buyers picked up the cattle right along and a clearance was made In good season. There was only a small supply of cows and heifers here and this accounted mostly for the activity displayed. Buyers evidently wanted supplies and went right after the cattle. There were few. If any, grass cows offered, the stuff being mostly corn feds. Salesmen found little difficulty In disposing of their holdings at prices steady to stronger, and the cattle were picked up early. Bulla, veal calx'es and stags were In about the same notches as yesterday, the market being Just about ateady, although feeder bulla may have been a little stronger. Stockei and feeder were In good demand and fully steady, although the comnon kinds, as has been the case for several days, were slow to move at the prices.
