July 28 A slight stirring of Interest In the trie stocks today scarcely served to move the general mar ket in sympathy. The Duying ot me tnree classes of the stock of the company came but from few sourre and was attributed to one or two of the larger traders who are unable to find any other sloca tor 'hlch any motives existed for a trader s movement. The unresuonslveness of tne United States Bteel stocks to the quarterly statement of net earninas. Dubllslied late yesterday, was an additional reason for scepticism over the power of news long expected to move prices. The quarterly re port was favorably commented upon ana was expected to make a strong showing. That holders rff stock are not equally In different to bad news of special properties Is Indicated by the occasional sharp breaks In specialties. Pittsburg Coal preierrea declined to a new low level today as a result of the suspension of Its dividends. The cotton market was thrown into some excitement again today by the publica tion of the government's revised figure of the crop acreage and the yellow fever outbreak in New Orleans was the subject of discussion with a slight effect of de pression tn some of the soumern rauroau stocks. News from the grain crops con tinued favorable. Money remains very easy, but foreign exchange rates ruw, "u there la a supposition that some ot tne Japanese loan proceeds are being re mitted abroad. The establishment of the Erie second preferred on a 4 per cent dividend basis was according to the best expectations, but the declaration of the dividend for a full year at this time with provlHlon for payment In two installments was a general surprise. The Erles rose In consequence In the final dealings, at which time the dividend was announced, and made the closing firm. Hnnds were steady. Total asies, rnr value, 81,976,000. The quality of the receipts was good and there was a fair sprinkling of western and Texas cattle offered. Sellers had the advantage today in the beef steer division and prloes ruled gener ally hlghir. . Buye'a were out early and there waa a fair call for good cattle. The corn-feds were what were wanted and on these kinds trading was active and the market generally 6al0c higher. The bulk of the steers, however, were weatern and Texas t.T, md buyera were slow to take hold of them. Trading was dull and draggy and prices a little weaker. Packers claim a poor outlet for beef at present and that their coolers are full, and as a consequence they are rather poor buyera The cow and heifer trade was slow today, there being but little activity to the de mand. Buyers were Indifferent on the west ern stuff and prices ruled a little weaker. Corn-feds, however, while not any higher, were In fair demand at Just about eteady prices. The bull market waa unsatisfactory, buy era overlooking anything that waa not very good. Prices on the common atuff wera lower, but veal calves and stags were about steady. Thero was a fair supply of stockers and feeders on sale today and there was a good demand for the stuff. 'Trading was fairly active on these kinds and the market was stronger.
