I'nder urg ent netnand from shorts the opening on 8 ptember was up tfc'u S1-' t XTfi . lilack riiHt in the wheat tields of Minnesota and the Imkotaa was the burden of numerous messages received here, not only from Minneapolis, but from all over the north west. Kear of a reetltlon of last years devastation In the spring wheat territory was the sole reason lor the active general demand for wheat tliut started prices In a wild scurry upward. All other Influences were apparently ignored. As the session advanced additional advices were received telling of the spread of the crop Infection. The fresh reports gave more specific In formation than was contained In previous aispatcnea. The reeu t w-ns still more urgent demand for wheat. Weather In the northwest waa reported as favorable to the spread of the blight, rains having fallen In numerous localities throughout the IHi kotss. Excitement In the pit was at white heat from start to finish. Longs with hand some profits in sight were about the only sellers. A sensational advance of nearly Ho In the price of the September option at ftiinneapoiis drove many shorts here to cover. Within a few minutes of the close the September option sold here at Mc, a net gain of 50 In two days. The market closed strong at the topmost point reached. Minneapolis, Duluth and Chicago reported receipts of 217 cars, against 177 cars last week and 201 a year ago. -The corn market was firm, partly because or me strength or wheat, but largely on nccount of a falling off In local receipts as Indicated In the estimates of tomorrow's arrivals. Commission houses and leading bulla were fairly active buyers during the last part of the session. The selling was chiefly by cash houses. The market closed firm. September opened Vtc higher at 5ne and after selling at 5474c advanced to 5rtc and closed at ftfity. laical receipts were cars, with 39 of contract grade. Trading waa quiet In the oats market, but a Arm tone prevailed. Strength of wheat and corn was the main Influence. 1'he bullish factor was a report of heavy rains in the southern part of Illinois and In Indiana. September opened unchanged at 2!Sc. sold between 2!i4c and 3oc and closed at 2Uti29Ttc Local receipts were 125 cars. Notwithstanding a 10c decline In the price of live hogs, the provisions market was firm. An Improved general demand was a cause of a moderate advance In values. NEW YORK, July 11 The extreme apathy of today' stock market served to eliminate another of the explanations which hsve been advanced from time to time to account for the lethargic rut Into which the trading has fallen. The torrid weather was the favorite explanation early In the market, but the moderate weather failed to bring any revival. It was then sup posed that the market was waiting for def inite action on the dividends which were confidently expected to be Increased. The most Important of these were L'nion I'a riflc and Amalgamated Copper, but the market shows as little stimulation from those causes today as when they were announced yesterday. The source of the disturbance In the wheat market was pretty clearly defined by ' the divergence In the movement or the northorn grajigers with a spring wheat traffic and the southern group with lines In the winter wheat belt which were rela tively Arm. Reports of further large pur chases of pig Iron gave a firm tone to the steel and iron Industrials, uui nun n most effective on t lie minor members of the group, I'nlted States Steel stocks hang ing susected and neglected. Estimates of the bank statement were somewhat con fused. Actual movements 01 currency promised a small change In the cash Item, the large absorption oy tne Bunurui , being practically offset by receipts rrom the interior. But the payments to the subtreasury coming early in tne weea would count' for their full effect In the daily averages. The large placing of for eign funds here during tne wee woum operate to relieve tne aemanu ujxmi mc New York loan account. The offerings of foreign funds here came to a pause today and the foreign exchange market showed a recovering tendency in consequence. The wavering tendency of the market was turned downwards on the most active trad ing of the day In the last half hour when Reading was attacked with vigor and car ried down 2H- The attack was due to the Impression that after so extensive specula tion as that which has taken place In the stock there mtiRt ramaln a vulnerable long Interest In the stock. The rea sons for the sheep trade being in this un SHtlsfactory shape ate not hard to find. The lonir hot srell of weather that has nrevnlhd In almost everv section of the country hss almost rarallsed the demand for mutton. When the heat Is so oppres sive as It has been for the last week or more In the large eastern consuming eon- l.ra nr. nna ruva roool with the result that the coolers of the packers, which were well filled to commence with, have remained so. Hence the demand for both sheep and lambs Is very small compared with wimt it woulri he under normal con rilth ns. The decline which has tsken place during tho last week or ten days appears to H Hue ntlr v to this IACK OI neninou which has caused the market to ssg from Its own weight. It does not appear to be so much a matter Of price witn tne pack ers II nf en nlillel ror the muiion The above will give an Idea of the con ditions governing the sheep trade at all selling points and will explain wny me sheep market Is reported null and lower, everv day. This morning, with only six teen cars In sight, the market was almost at a standstill. Some of the buyers had orders for a few cars, while others did not appear to want any at all. Therefore It was not surprising that the forenoon wore away with little being done and that It was almost midflav before enough business had been transacted to call It a market. Nor was It surprising that tha stuff that did sell brought prices that were anywhere from weak to 15c lower. In fact a breathing spell at all market points would do the market no harm. Beef steers were not In very large sup ply this morning, but at the same time the demand was by no means urgent and the general trade was lacking In snap. Buy ers were in no hurry to begin operations, but with so few cattle on sale It did not take them very long to clean up the most desirable when they did-get started. Some of the est cattle sold at prices that looked Just rfbout steady, but the feelink was weak. Cattle that wero not especially de sirahle wero anywhere from weak at 10c lower than vesterday. Some good corn fed steers wild up to 35.20. Ix-fs than ten loads of cows and heifers were on sale and owing to the very light run the offerings were all taken In reason able season. The prices paid did not '--k materially different from those which pre. vale! yesterday and the general market was steady. - Bulls, stags, calves, etc., did not show material changb from yesterda. Holders of light stockers, especially those on the common order, complained that It was difficult to find buyers for that kind and that cattle of that description are gradually working to a lower basis.
