CHICAGO, July ?A Alleged appearance of
blarlc rust In the fields of Koutli Dakota and
Minnesota, caimul an excited advance In
prices here today. gThe September option
Jumped up 3'c. At the close the current
figures a ore within a cent of the highest
of the day. Corn Is unchanged. Oats are
up to 4c Provisions are Iul74c lower.
Notwithstanding excellent weather for
crops the wheat market was strong from
the start. At the opening the September
option was up Vc to lc at Hi4'u85o. Shorts
a ere urgent bidders for September. Com
mission houses also were In general eagt-r
to -buy. The cause for the pressing de
mand was reported confirmation of riamaees

wired that hianir . - "i eniertainea tne nope mat sum

' Reliable people who told us yesterday that

today of serious damage in South Dakota
and Minnesota.." Pringle, Fitch & Kankln
wired trom Minneapolis to the George A.
Adams Grain company: "The sample of
wneat from Cokatw, Minn., which I wired
you about yesterday, was examined by one
of the mill chemists yesterday afternoon
and pronounced black rust." Not content
with these reports, many traders wired
themselves to Minneapolis dealers and got
tne tame story.
L'nder thu influence of rust talk Septem
ber wheat mounted to 8e about noon and
July went to oSc. This was after an
opening averaging 4c better than yester
oay s price. Realizing at the close caused
.September to ease off. July closed at
1"C September at 874c, and December at
874c. This was a gain of 24c for Sep
tember. Kansas City sent word that casn
wheat there was up 24c.
Corn opened high, but gradually declined
to yesterday'! close. It finished with July

ber at 44c and old December at 504c.
uats aavanced and closed with July at
3C4e, September at 294c and December
at 304e.
The Liverpool close was lX'UPjd higher
on wheat and Hd hlRher on corn. The
wheat was affected by higher American
markets, and poor crop conditions in Rus
sia and Roumanla.
Today s Inter Ocean disclaims the truth
of yesterday s rust reports. It says that
most of the reports emanated from one
bullish combination at Minneapolis and
that a number of big elevator interests
yesterday afternoon were unable to con
firm advices sent out by the chosen few.
Stocks of wheat at Minneapolis have de.
creased Tfto.oiu bushels In rive days. The
Northwestern Miller, out today, says the
weather in the northwest has been very
favorable for the growing crop. It says
also that cutting In some parts will com
mence as early as usual this year, but In
most places the crop Is two weeks late.
It adds that no signs of rust have been
discovered.
Primary receipts of wheat were 782. OOO
bushels, against 644, fOO bushels a year ago.
A Chicago cosh broker says today: "A
new feature of this crop of wheat is that
It Is more evenly distributed than I have
ever known It. It Is not poor anywhere.
Th east will not draw so extensively from
the west; we will not draw on Oregon and
California; Michigan, Indiana and Ohio will
not draw on us, and the northwest will pull
out of the western markets In thirty or
torty days.

avoided and had accordingly been active on
the ahort side of the market. Advices from
Minneapolis and Duluth giving- alleged spe
cific details concerning the spread of black
rust In the wheat fields nf Minnesota and
South Dakota caused consternation among
these short sellers and started strenuous
efforts to cover aalea. In addition a report
from Liverpool told of damage to the Rus
sian crop, l'nder these influences the price
of September advanced te Wc. lAte In the
session the market reacted somewhat on
heavy profit taking, but the close was
strong with September at 874c Clearances
of wheat and flour were eoual to 13. MW
bushela. Primary receipts were 72.ow bush
els, compared with 144.400 bushels a year
ago. Minneapolis, Duluth and Chicago re
ported receipts of 131 cars, against la last
week and 2-5 cars a year ago.
I-ess Interest was manifested In the corn
market on account of the dverehadowing
activity in the wheat pit. The volume of
trading waa comparatively small. Strength
of wheat offset the effect of the continued
beautiful weather for the rapid maturing of
the crop, causing a steady tone through
the entire session. Firm cables helped to
support prices. The market closed steady
with prices practically unchangnd. Sep
tember opened 4c higher ut 554c sold be
tween 54e and K40 and closed at 544c
Local receipts were 282 cars with 53 cars of
contract grade. Stungth of wheat lm-
imrieu a nun tone to the oats market.
Business In the pit was exceedingly quiet.
Fear of delay in deliveries from the new
crop on account of recent heavy rains In
Iowa was sgaln a bullish Influence. Scp
tfmlier opened 4744c higher at 1$V to L9V-.
sold between i94c and IVr and closed at
294c Wcal receipts were 117 cars.
Provisions were weak on fairly acllv"

price of live hogs had a depressing effect.

NEW YORK STOCKS AND BONDS
Market is Actire and Lower on Selling; to
Take Profits.
INCREASE IN UNION PACIFIC DIVIDEND
Advance la the Rate la Followed by
Reaction, Which fhows that
Rise Had Already fleea
Dtseoanted.
NEW YORK. July 20.-Ptock brokers re
garded the moderation In the heat as an
Important develupment and to this was at
tributed in no small part the change from
the extreme apathy of the market. The In
crease In interest proved to be amongst
the ellers and prices suffered accordingly.
In addition to the change in the weather
there were some developments of Import
ance In financial affairs. First place waa
flven in stock matket estimation to the
niorr Pacific dividend declaration putting
that stock on a 6 per cent basis, as sgainst
the recently prevailing 4 per cent rate. This
action was no surprise and hss been con
fidently expected for weeks. The response
of the market to the news waa watchd,
ho sever, with keen attention to form a
Judgment of how far existing prices have
already discounted developments. It had
been hoped that a considerable Influence
would remain with actual increases made
In dividends, owing to the testimony thtis
afforded of confidence In the maintenance
of prosperous conditions on the part of the
railroad authorities. The decline in prices
yesterduv on the Illinois Central dividend
was ascribed to the fact thst the regular
dividend was declared to be still ( per cent,
with the Increase designated an extra divi
dend Rut the similar reaction in I'nlon
Pacific todav on the rise In the dividend
rate emphasized the Impression that buying
In anticipation of dividend Increases has
been completed. Tnere was a aemonsira
tlon ngain In the Hill stocks on rumors of
an extra distribution of assets on those
stocks, which were rverslstent In spite of
the published denial of them by the head of
tliose systems. l he present margei is so
largely based on expectation of Increased
disbursements of profits that this condition
of the sneculation Is deemed important.
Ronds have not shared In the recent ad
vance nor have the preferred stocks on
which the return Is restricted to a fixed
dividend rate.
The London discount rate continued ex
tremely apathetic In spite of easy money
conditions and nffordod no help to this
market. Oreat importance was attached to
the reports of reviving demand In the iron
and Moel trades, but this Sfemed to lack
enough Influence to offset the reactionary
tendency from other factors. Reports of
crop damage were associated with the
strength of the wheat market, but an over
Bold condition In that market was sus
pected. Another bank failure In Kansas
City, while pronounced unimportant, was
another Influence toward depression. Al
leged cutting of trunk line passenger rates
and aggressive n eaures for freight traffic
bv the gulf lines, as against the Atlantic
port carriers, received some belated atten
tion. The response of the market to the
Amalgamated Copper dividend Increase late
In the dav Intensified the Impression that
dividend increases hsve exhausted their ef
fect. It has been predicted that this divi
dend would be raised to a 6 per cent rate,
but the stock sold down this morning fin al
legations that the rate would be left un
changed. The Increase to a 5 per cent rate
caused a jump in the stock, but It fell
buck under reallilng and Its llnal rally did

The range of prices paid in Kansas City,
as reported by the Edwards-Wood com
pany, 110-111 Board of Trade, was:
CATTLE The receipts of cattle were not
very large, only about seventy-live cars
being reported In the yards this morning.
This was little more than halt the number
here a weeK ago. For the four days there
is a small tailing oil In receipts as com
pared with the corresponding days of last
week.
The market this morning on beef steers
was in fair condition. The supply was far
from being largo and as there was a reason
able demand on th? part of the local pack
ers most everything .desirable changed
hands In good seasun. As to prices the
market was somewhat uneven. Tne best
dry lot of cattle sold at tully steady prlcea
us a rule and some sales looked strong.
On the other hand sellers who did not hap
pen to have somthing that Just suited,
buyers could not see anything very good in
the market and they had to hustle to gel aa
good prices aa yesterday. Taking the mar
ket as a whole It would be sufficient to
quote it as &leady.
Bulls, stags, calves, etc., were In very
moderate supply and the market did not
present any especially new features, prices
In the main being tne same as prevailed
yesterday.
Cows and heifers were not very plentiful
and the good dry lot cattle brought about
the same prices as yesterday. Holders of
that kind did not have much trouble In un
loading at satisfactory prices. On the
olher nand grass cows sere slow sales and
In some cases they looked easier. At the
best they were no more than steady.
;ood trades of stockerss and feeders
weighing 7i pounds and leiter were steady
with yesterday. The less deslduble and
lighter weight cuttle seem 10 oe gruauauy
working to a lower basis.

SHEEP There was a fair supply of sheep
at most selling- Dolnts this morning, there
being twenty-six cars here. Receipts here
consisted largely of sheep, with a lair
showing of lambs.
The dullness which has been so noticeable
at all market notnta was still verv much In
evidence this morning. In fact general
coiidtions remain the same as outlined
yesterday. The eastern demand for mutton
Is still limited In comarlson to wnat 11
was two weeks ago, and the requirements
of packers are correspondingly smaller As
noted yesterday the result of the conditions
governing the sheep trade Is that packers
are very Indifferent and not at all inclined
to buy In a huny 01 lo anticipate their
wants In the least.
This mnring with not very many lambs In
sight, the market on that kind was steady
and the more desirable of the offerings
changed hands In fair season On the
other hand sheep were very slow at prh-vs
that ranged anywhere from steady to loc
lower.

that an active period la about to open.
The large manufacturers have not been
heavy buyers, but enough of the mills
hav been operating to make the aggregate
sales larger than for several weeks. In
prices the market Is not abnormally strong.
The continued firmness reports from the
London sales is an Important factor.
