CHICAGO GRAM AMD PROVISIONS
Featare of the Traalag aad Closlag
Price on Board f Trad.
CHICAGO, July IS Possibilities of dim
age to the wheat crop In the northwet re
sulted In a sllgKI rally In prices here today.
At th close the September option was up
Sc. Corn shows a gain of v,c. Oats are
off tic. Provisions are up 6 to I2c.
Firmness In the wheat .market developed
soon after the opening At the start a
weak tone prevailed, initial quotations on
September being down Sc to S". t -'o
to 821-jc, news st hand being entirely of a
bearish character. Weather conditions
throughout the wheat growing sections of
th Lnlted States were almost Ideal for the
new crop, no rain being reported except
shower In the Dakotas and Minnesota.
Th movement of new wheat In the south
west wss a gain of large volume, aggregate
arrivals today at Kansas City and St.
I-ouls being 604,Ono bu., compared with li.
C0 bu. a year ago. Bull sentiment was
stimulated by a report from Kansas City
predicting a falling off In the movement
of new wheat In th near future. As a
result the market continued to become
firmer, but the chief Influence that Intended
to encourage the bulls was the fear of
damage to spring wheat by extreme high
temperatures and other potential causes.
At 63Ho the September option touched the
highest point of the day. Although a slight
reaction occurred on profit-taking the mar
ket closed firm, with September at IUV,o.
Clearances of wheat and flour were equal
to 22,0110 bu. The world s visible supnlv, as
shown by Rradstreets, decreased 3,7nO,000 bu.
Primary receipts were 79U.0H0 bu., compared
with 184.000 bu. a year ago. Minneapolis.
Duluth and Chicago reported receipts of
186 car against 213 cars last week and 278
cars a year ago. '
Influenced by firmness of wheat sentiment
In the corn pit was Inclined to bullishness
after the first hour. At the start the mar
ket was weakened by lower prices st Liv
erpool and by ideal weather for crops In
the United States. Shorts soon started
buying moderately and caused a substantial
rally. An estimate of light receipts for
tomorrow helped strengthen the market
late In the day. The close was firm. Sep
tember opened HfjWc to So lower, at b4s
to 64H'354c, sold up to 55c and closed at
65c. Local receipts were 450 cars, with 100
of contract grade.
Liquidation, due to excellent weather con
ditions, caused weakness In Use oats mar
ket. Some recovery was maffe during the
last hour on buying by shorts, the closing
being fairly steady. September opened .
?.Iower', 5 28,4 to cM between
28Vb28V and Xo and closed at 29c. Local
receipts were 226 cars.
Provisions were firm, following 5o ad
vance In th price of live hogs. The vol
ume of trading was Small. At the close
September pork was up 15Sc, at 312 5
Lard was up 2a to 6c, at 37.22itf87.26. Ribs
were 5c higher, at 37.92Hc.

NEW YORK, July 18 A glance at the
total sales of stocks for the day will make
clear that the trivial fluctuations In prices
were owing to the fact that no Important
trading was done. The, small attendanc
of brokers at the Stock exchange showed
more Interest In the discussion of the
weather than In the market. A down
ward drift of a few eighths In active
stocks was explained by the report that
the principal trader In stock had left the
floor to indulge In a shower bath. The

low the trader's return.
Financial considerations of far-reaching
consequence do not enter Into the discus
sion ot such a market. The bulk of the
day's meager business was done In the
first hour of the session, when a few test
ing operations by traders were In evidence.
These attempts demonstrated the lifeless
condition of the market and left It to the
semi-stagnation of tho rest of the day.
The gravitation of prices to a slightly lower
level during the day was ascrlhable as
much to Inanition as to any active cause.
The Lnlon Pacific dividend to be decleared
In the future was still much discussed,
and the continued belief that the stock
would bp placed on a 6 per cent dividend
basis was modified In Its effect by the
question of how far the Increase had al
ready been discounted In the price of the
stork. There was nothing in the weekly
crop bulletin of the weather bureau to
d sturb the recent confidence in the con
dition of the grain crops, but there was
some upward reaction from the consider

CATTLE A general lack ot activity was
a notifiable feature on the cattle hill this
morning. The cattle moved slowly, and
little, was dune till well along toward mid
day. .The run was fairly heavy, about I'jo
cars being on sale. The receipts were some
forty-one cars lighter than last Tuesday
and about 135 cars heavier than th corre
sponding day of last year.
The big end of the receipts consisted of
beef steers and there was plenty of grass
cattle tin sale. Buyers were rather indif
ferent on everything except the choice kinds
and trading was slow and draggy. It was
a case of continued peddling on the part of
sellers to dispose of their holdings and they
were forced to make concessions in many
cases. On the good choice handy weights
the market ruled about nteady, but It took
work to get the prices, while buyers were
not interested, to any extent in the com
mon and grassy kinds. Prices on these
kinds were Just about a dime lower and
were slow sale at that.
Cows and heifers were In poor demand
today and the movement was slow and dull.
Buyers did not aeem anxious for supplies
and took little interest ln the offerings.
In this division sales were generally Wc
lower, and as buyers and sellers could not
get together early there was little dune till
well along In the forenoon.
Bulls, veal calves and stags were also
lower and trading was on the draggy order.
There was a fulr demand for good bulls,
although at lower prices, but the common
stuff was not wanted.
There was a fair supply of stockers and
feeders here today and some sales of the
very best kinds looked about steady, while
the poorer grades were about a dime lower.

iiiiir-ira iiiamri on lamDS was in
very fair shape this morning, that is, there
was a fair showing of that kind of stock,
and a demand about equal to the supply.
The result was that the market opened
about steady and the first sales were mada
a' flees fully as good as yesterday.
The sheep market, on the other hand, was
not to the liking of sellers, buyer being
rather bearish In their views and not ln any
hurry to fhl orders. The trade was consid
erable of a drag from start to finish and It
was late In the forenoon when buvers and
sellers got together. As regards prices the
market might be described as steady to a
little lower.
