The Bee: 1 notice In your Issue of yester
day what purports to be a "special" from
Basin, Wyo., which contains many mis
statements and reflects seriously upon a
number of honorable men In this section of
the country.
As secretary and general manager of tha
Hanover Canal company and the Hanover
I -and and Irrigation company I desire to
say that Mr. McDonald has never put a
dollar Into either enterprise; neither has
he secured a dollar for the promotion of
either, from beginning to end; that botit
canals have been built practically upon
borrowed capital furnished by Hon. W. I
Culbertson and R. E. Coburn of Carroll.
Is,; Mr. D. T. Pulllam of Loveland, Colo.,
and other of like standing.
The entire cash Income from the sale of
lands and water rights under both canals
has not exceeded $50,000 to date, every cent
of which baa gone back Into canr.l construc
tion. The Hanover Canal company was or
ganised to reclaim about 1&,000 acres under
the "Carey arid land act." About a year
later the Hanover Land and Irrigation
company was Incorporated to buy a tract
of land known as the "Colorado flats" and
construct a canal for Its reclamation.
Mr. McDonald has not, neither has ha
ever had any semblance of a claim In this
enterprise, but has continually sought to
discredit It and the men who are seeking by
their means to develop the country.
As to the standing and character of tha
gentlemen connected with these enterprise
and their reputation for honesty, Integrity
and fair dealing, please let me refer you
to Hon. a W. Wattles, president of tha
Union National bank of Omnha, as to W.
L. Culbertson and R. E. Coburn, to tha
Bank of Loveland, Colo., as to D. T. Pul
llam, to the United States National bank of
Omaha as to Dr. N. B. Ralrden and the
Merchants National bank of Omaha as to
myself, or any reputable firm with which
they have ever done business. As to tho
standing of the Hanover Canal company
and the Hanover Land and Irrigation com
pany, we most respectfully refer you to tha
First National bank of Thermopolla, Wyo.,
and the State Loan and Trust company
bank of Basin, Wyo., where these compa
nies have conducted their business for the
last two and one-half years.
The suit which called forth the dispatch
above referred to was begun about a year
ago and was practically thrown out of
court by Judge Carpenter last April and
later entirely so by a ruling of Judge Par
meif e, so that your correspondent waa
palming off a bit of ancient history an
"news of the day." The fact Is that since
Mr. McDonald failed to get Into court ha
has carried on a "private press bureau" to
air his grievances before the public and
bring. If possible, discredit upon the enter
prises In which he claims so large an In
terest. Notwithstanding the above statement of
facts, tha companies have twlee offered to
submit any claims he might have to a Com
mittee of arbitration, which offer he has
failed to accept, knowing that he has no
claim that he could enforce, either in law

Bee: The energy, vim and perseverance
displayed by the committeemen of the
Young Men's Christian association In col
lecting .subscriptions for the amount of
$100,000, for the erection of tha new build
ing is Indeed admirable and worthy of its
cause, Tha new building In Itself Is a
worthy enterprise for the upbuilding of
our metropolis, not talking of the great
good which the Institution has In store for
the young generation of Omaha as an ed
ucational Institution, developing the mind
and body. It Is pleasing to see how lav
ishly snd willing the people of Omaha are
ready with their subscriptions. It shows
that Omahans are ever ready to subscribe
for a good cause and are doing it' with
good cheer.
While the erection of the Young Men's
Christian association building Is a good
and worthy undertaking, yet It reaches
only a small per cent of our citizens and
benefits the membership of that institu
tion alone.
Why not cast our eyes again to that
grand edifice on Fifteenth and Howard
streets, which stands there In a crude and
unfinished condition T In Its present state
It casts a reflection upon the citizens ot
Omaha and is certainly no credit to tha
pride and patriotism of Omaha, as far as
Omaha Is concerned.
The new Auditorium Is a cause as grand
and worthy as any Young Men's Christian
association building. It is a building "for
the people, by the people." It Is open to
all classes, creeds and denominations and
has for Its purpose the education of ths
soul and body of everyone, without ony
discrimination. Why not finish It? Why
not complete It and have It as a lasting
monument of the enterprising spirit of tha
Omaha citizens, aa a monument which will
stand forever. In all Its grandeur for tha
benefit of all tha people?
