Order have bean Issued and plans formu lated (or the construction of a protected target ranee at Fort Crook, which will obviate the necessity for the troopB at that post to go to distant target ranges In future for target practice. The protected range will be for 200 and 500 yards distances and will be built under the direction of the Inventor of the pro tected ranges. Captain Charles R. Howland, Twenty-first United States infantry, be tween now and September 1. There la but one other protected target range In the United States, It being located at the Presidio (California), and was con structed there under the supervision of Captain Howland. The new range will cost about $3,500. The design of the new range la to prevent danger from over or under shooting by the marksmen, which hitherto has been the cause of the target ranges at Fort Crook bring abandoned. The protected devices are so arranged that all rifle practice will be nearly on a tangent, the shields being so perfected that even by an accidental discharge of the rifle in the hands of the mnrksman the bullet cannot go far ajnlss from the target butt.
