Heavier Than First Bis Col. lections (iood with Job- ' bers and Retailers. Business with Omaha jobbers for tha first week In July Indicates that trade for the lust six months of the vear la llkelir prove even heavier than for the first ix months, and that the ar will be tha at ever known. All lines rnrirl mn In. leased trsda over tha virrKr.:iriinr r,rl,,,l ?I Jr'r' "n1 there la every evidence ii win continue, uollecllons are un- , Usually good for thin time of year and the country merchanta say that the same con dition holds true with thsm. -Sugar la off ten points thla week, alto- f ether on account of the demoralization In reight ratea. The market la only fairly steady and a further decline would not Surprise the trade. Cereals are all unchanged, with the ex ception of rolled oata. which sliuws rnnald erable strength on account of discouraging crop reports. Prices have advanced lotyla cents a caae on five-pound packages and Valuea have gone up on barrels. Quietness characterised the canned goods market for the week. The growth ef corn baa been greatly retarded by cool weather In section of some of the eastern states, and a shade firmer feeling has been created on the probabilities of a light output there. Canned tomatoes 'have lieen steady. An Opening price fit 12 has been made on New York gallon apples. Whether fills price Is to prevail Is uncertain, much depending on the progress of the crop timing July. Through June the apple crop In the pan ning districts of New York has progressed favorably and everything points to a fair yield. Coffee la a little weak at about last week's r rices. The receipts of Rio and Hantoa for he crop year ending June ) were ,!, OH) bags, compared with 10,48,0t bags a year go and 13.324,000 bags two years ugo. All grades of checso are practically un changed. There Is a slow demand for large sizes, but better doinand for the small alr.es. Bklrra are quiet, but the fancy qual ities are well sustained. The only point of Interest In the dried fruit market was a slight advance In the doinand for raisins. The supply of this fruit Is light and the movement restricted by high prices. Apricots are dull and easy and peaches quiet. Prunes are held firmly up to a high price established by the crop conditions of ihls season. No changes are reported In the market for the grocery grade of molasses, busi ness being seasonable, but re Heeling the usual midsummer dullness. Stocks In deal ers' hands are light and prices are firmly maintained. Kisckstrap Is steady at un changed prices. Dealers report a light trade In salt fish, with no particular Interest In any variety. Mackerel Is steady with a llifht movement. Herring la qulot and the movement la lim ited to small lots. There Is not much in quiry after codfish. Smoked fish are quiet and the trade Is limited to actual demand. Kor family whitcrlsh there la a big de mand. The salmon market Is about the same as It has been for a week. Opening prices on sockeve and the probable bulk of the pack are about the only points of Interest In the market. Red Alaska Is most plontlful and Columbia Chinook Is so scare that It Is almost Impossible to fill orders. Pinks move with freedom and are held steadily. Bar dines are unchanged and the movement Is light. In hardware there are no advances of any V consequence to, be recorded. Tha demand 7 for goods made from black and galvanised r sneet and tin Iiiaie nas oeen intrmw, me; ; thla leads to the belief that there soon will be an advance In the price of the raw ma terials. Nalla and wire products are JTialn talned at the same prices. They are being more firmly held In first hands and there Is less evidence of price cutting. A letup In tha active prosecution of the hardware business at this season la quite In the usual course, and at the present time Is not so pronounced as to Indicate anything unfavorable In regard to the outlook. The six months Just closed have been on the whole, characterised by excel lent conditions, although soma of the most sanguine anticipations which prevailed at the opening of the year were not realised to their full extent. In heavy goods there has been some vacillating in the matter of price, and the volume of business In this line has been somewhat affected by these Influences, but hardware In general has been quite steady. Manufacturers havs had no reason for reducing prices so 1 far as the cost of their goods Is con cerned, this being practically unchanged, the tendency being. Indeed, with the nat ural Increase In the expense account, to ward higher rather than lower costs. Prices certainly have been, on the whole, very well maintained. Beptember was up Hif'ac at HS'avViC. Heavy rains through out Kansas were the main cause of the Initial firmness. In the northwest, how ever, weather conditions were generally favorable for the spring-sown crop, ami this fact led to free selling by sever.il prominent commission houses, resulting in a quick decline. Later the market became still weaker, largely In sympathy with NEW TORRSTOCKS AND BONDS Week. Closes with s Carefully Managed VsTcment to Realize. NEW YORK, July 8. -The week In the Stock exchans-e closed with a carefully managed movement to realize, which was facilitated by the bidding up of prices here sharp decline In cash prices, following re- n' there at tlie opening. After the selling o-i,i luiee prices were mnraea up Biraln, leaving the last prices not far from those of last nlsht. The reHllilna? was most conspicuous In Readlnp and L'nlon Pacific, In which the speculative operations have been the largest nil the week. The demand for Reading has been Incited by proclaiming confidence that the dividend on Central railroad of New Jersey was to be Increased with benefit to Reading through Its holdings of that etock. The action of the directors today In declaring only the regular dividend on Central Rail way of New Jersey was calculated there fore to Induce some selling of Heading. The cotton market was excited again, but the grain markets were Inclined to react on the favorable weather conditions In the wheat belt. The rcallring In Heading was partly covered by marking up Reading second preferred. The I'nlted States Steel stocks also showed signs of Irregular strength In connection with rumors of the figures for the net earnings of the last quarter. The largo decrease In cash shown by the bank statement was a surprise, as the pre liminary estimates had Indicated only a nominal change. The loan contraction was regarded as moderate for the opening week of a disbursement period. Tha market closed quiet a:d steady. Tvtn.1 sales of bonds, pat value, 2.1fifl,ono. There was a num-l-r of advices of a bullish nature, but they seemed to have little effect on the mar ket. One report from Ban Francisco claimed that "The wheat crop of California had defrlorated 46 per cent. From Minne apolis came another report asserting that black rust had caused considerable damage to spring-sown wheat. A factor that brought out much of the late selling was a revised estimate by a Chicago expert regarding the total winter wheat crop based on statistics furnished since July 1. According to these figures the total yield was 4no.noo.0i) to 42n.noo.otiO bushels Sep tember reached the lowest point of the day at PTHc. The market closed weak, with Beptember at RT'aC. Duluth and Chicago reported re ceipts of 149 cars, against 119 cara last week and 143 cara a year ago. The general quality of in cattle was fairly good all the week. Tha market on beef steers opened vary satisfactorily this week. The supply of cat tle on Monday waa light and buyers lost no time In picking up tha reoaipts and there waa a good, active tone to the trading all through. Prices on that day advanced li"tf 16c, with conditions all In favor of the sell ing Interests. On Tuesday there was no market, It being the Fourth, and on Wednesday shippers apparently tried to make up for the lost day and cattle re ceipts were heavy. With these heavy is celpts came conditions exactly opposite those existing Monday. Buyers came on ths hill In a bearish mood and were indif ferent, there being little or no life to Hie trade. Sellers found It difficult to move their holdings and were forced to take off all that had been put on on Monday. Since the middle of the week tha market ruled generally steady and at the close prices are in about the same notches as on the close of last (week, or possibly a llttla stronger. The supply of cows and heifers waa light all the week and there was a good demand for the desirable kinds. The market for the week Is a little stronger than the close of last week, although the common, grassy cows are In pour demand and are only idoui steaay. Bulls, veal calves and stags ruled gener ally steady for the week ana there was lit tle change in prices. The supply of Blockers and feeders was small this week and the quality of the re ceipts was rather poor. Theia Is a fair de mand for cattle of this class and the mar ket for the week Is about steady on Eood kinds, but lower on others. Itepresentutlvo sales: HOGS There was not quite the usual Sat urday's run here today, about seveiity-nva loads being on sale. Conditions were a lit tle better than yesterday, buyers not seem ing quite so Indifferent. The opening of the market, however, was very slow and draggy ana bidding was a little lower. The agitation is the re sult of the recent leak In tho Agricultural department whereby cotton reports wera given out In advance.
