Color Sergeant Charles Morgan has been
appointed regimental commissary sergeant.
Thirtieth Infantry, and ordered to report
to Captain 1. Krwln. commissary, Ilitr-
tlrth Infantry, for duty. Sergeant Morgan
has served over twenty years In the United
Elates army, and has seen service in
Alaska, Philippines, and also In China,
serving with the Fourteenth United States
Infantry during the Boxer trouble In the
latter country. Where he was wounded at
the battle of Tang Bung.

at 4 a. m. the morning of July 4, In order
to reach Omaha In time to catch the spe
cial train leaving for Calhoun, Neb., at
6:30 a. m. The band had an all day en
gagement to piny for the citizens of that
town.
Fourth of July being a national holiday,
all duties at the post were dispensed
with except the necessary guard. The
troops engaged In rifle competitions and
sports of all kinds. Company teams of
rive enlisted men competed for prlxes at
the target range each team firing Ave
rounds standing, kneeling and prone posi
tions. Companies B and D, Thirtieth In
fantry, tied for the first prise, value $5.
Company B getting the decision, having
the least number of misses. Sergeant
Stephenson of Company B made the highest
total or three scores. Private Medley or
Company D won the prize for best Indi
vidual score, making twenty-four out of a
possible twenty-flve. Among the other
events held were catching a greased pig.

the pig; sack race, fifty yards, won by
Private May, Company A, prize $2; wheel
barrow race, won by Private Swain. Com
pany I, prize $2; barrel race, won by Pri

Castle of the Thirtieth Infantry.
A series of ball games arranged for the
season between the various companies of
the Thirtieth Infantry and which are played
at the post between company teams dally,
causes the keenest Interest among the
officers, who are always on the ground,
encouraging their respective teams. The
women of the garrison have made a silk
pennant to be presented to' the company
whose team Is fortunate enough to be in
the lead at the close of the base ball
season,

FORT DES MOINES, la., July 8 (Spe'
clal.) Lieutenant Colonel Murray arrived
on Friday evening and haa taken the
quarters formerly occupied by Colonel
Thomas.
Mrs. Rockwell, mother of Lieutenant
Rockwell, Is very sick at the lieutenant's
quarters with cancer.
In spite of the inclement weather and
bad stute of the ground, the post team

Rev. Dr. W. II. Day of Des Moines
conducted the evening service at -the post
hall last Sunday. Severn 1 members-of th
choir of the doctor's church accompanied
him and rendered several fine selections of
sacred music. Next Sunday Rev. Douglas
will preach and will alao bring with him
his choir. These pleasant Sunday evening
services are solely due to the efforts of
Cria plain Waring.
First Lieutenant Emory W. West, Sev
enth cavalrv, on college duty In this state,
was a visitor at the post the early part
of the week.
A review and drill was planned by Colonel
Thomas on Wednesday In honor of Con
gressmen Hull and Smith, but owing to
orders from the War department directing
that all unnecessary duties cease during
the day of the late Secretary Hay's funeral,
the ceremonies were dispensed with.
Lieutenant and Mrs. Taylor are the proud

The Flfty-clxth regiment, Iowa National
Guards, arrived at the camp grounds north
of the post on Thursday and have settled
down to the business of a soldier's life
for ten duys, when It will be relieved by
another regiment of state troops. On

army gives a dance in honor of Company
G of the Flftv-slxth, in return for cour
teles shown the troop whilst It was at
Fort Dodge on a practice marcli last

Lieutenant Kromer of the regiment ar
rived at the post on Tuesday and assumed
command of Troop F. The lieutenant hus
been on duty as instructor at West Point
for two .years.
The garrison flag, which- recent orders
authorized to be displayed at this post,
was hoisted for the first time on the morn
ing of the Fourth, but had to be hauled
down on account of the high wind.
The property of Lieutenant Ryun. who
has been at the school at Fort Ieaven
worth since the regiment's arrival from
the Philippines, has arrived, presaging t he
coming of another officer to the post. Th
lieutenant will take command of Troop K
on his arrival.

enth cavalry was discharged Thursday, his
term of enlistment having expired. For
several years Chastaln has been detailed
on extra duty as foreman of the printing
office maintained by the school of applica
tion and was transferred from the Fourth
to the -Eleventh cavalry In order thst bis
services might be retained when the Fourth
cavalry left for Fort Walla Walla last fall.

Friday evening, June 80, was ladles' night
at the club and there was a large attend-
nnce. The dancing lasted from 8 to 10.
There were several tables of cards and a
most delightful evening was spent by all.
Saturday evening Colonel and Mrs. Stan
ton entertained at dinner Major and Mrs.
Cheever, Mrs. Parham, Mrs. Furlong and
Lieutenants Strong and W. O. Reed. The
same evening Major Hunter gave a "stag"
dinner In honor of General Blddle. The
other guests were Captain Furlong, Captain
Heiberg, Captain Cole. Lieutenant B. A.
