CHICAGO ORAU AMI PRO I lIO9
Features uf the t rading and 4 losing
Prteea on Board of Trade.
CHICAGO. July ".-Excellent weather
throughout the wheat eecl.ons of the I'MI'-d
States led to a fresh slump In puces here
today. At the clone wheat for September
deliery whs 4c down. Corn l prac
tically unchanged. Oats are 4c off. Pro
visions show a loss o a shade to 74c.
The wheat market was weak from the
start. At the opening September whs
down 4'ci4c to 4itc at 874'ij7'Sc. The
factor mainly responsible for the Initial
weakness was the Improved weather con
ditions, both northwest and southwest. A
contributory Influence was a decline In tha
price of wheat at Liverpool. Before the
end of the first hour September had de
clined to 864c On the break commission
houses purchased freely. The buying re
sulted In a quick upturn, September ad
vancing to 7S'uli,7iV,c. The rally was
helped by a dual report made by two well
known crop experts estimating the total
yield of winter wheat at J.to.kki.'XO to 366.
0"0,(o hushels, whereas Inferences from
government figures make the yield about
436,noO.(iO bushels. The market closed weak
with September at 8'rS'itttic. Clearances
of wheat and flour were equal to 77.0UO
bushels. The world's visible supply, as
shown by Bradstreet's, decreased in&,(0
bushels. Primary receipts were 342,200
bushels compared with 219.500 bushels a
year ago. Minneapolis, Duluth and Chi
cago reported receipts of 2o4 cars against
167 cars last week and 170 cars a year ago.
Notwithstanding the weakness of wheat,
sentiment In the corn pit throughout the
entire day was Inclined to bullishness One
of the chief reasons for the firm undertone,
was an Improved demand for export. An
other Influence was extremely light ac
ceptances from bids sent out by cash
houses. The market received active sup
port from the loading bulls. Shorts also
were moderate purchasers. A firm tone
prevailed at the close. September opened
unchanged to a shade higher at 66!&6!4c
to 564e, "Old between M'ljljSSc and 664c
and closed at 654c Iical receipts were
6o4 cars with 174 cars of contract grade.
Weakness of wheat caused moderate
rrofit taking In oats, resulting In an easy
market. The Kentucky report putting the
condition of the crop at 99 was another
depressing Influence. September opened
VrHit! lower at 814&31V. old off to 31c
and closed at 314c Iocal receipts were
174 cars.
Provisions were Arm nt the start as
a result of decreased receipts of hogs. The
slump In whent, however, caused some
profit taking, resulting In slight losses.
At the close September pork was off 74c
at 112.73. Ijird was down 74c at r7.25. Hlbs
were a shade lower at 17.7747.80.
Estimated receipts for tomorrow: Wheat,
31 cars: corn, 354 cars; oats 119 cars; hogs,
34,000 head.

NEW TORK, July 6 The coincidence of
the free selling of stocks to take profit yes
terday and the publication of an Interview
with a prominent speculative leader Seak
lng with great confidence of the prospect
for much higher prices, had the effect ot
leaving sentiment a good deal unsettled to
day. The desire was to sltpw how far the
realizing sales of yesterday had effect-d
the distribution of holdings from tlw? hands
of the powerful operators who have con
ducted the advance and whose motive for
further protection of the market would
thus be lessened. There was further sell
ing of stocks In fact at available oppor
tunities, and under cover of the sustaining
efTect of the spectacular movement in spe
cial stocks.
Several Incidents of the day were In favor
of the market and It had no Important ob
stacle to contend with. Hut the volume of
dealings fell below the total of yesterday
and there was a violent congestion of ac
tivity in Reading and Union Pacific. The
speculation In I'nlon Pacific was fostered
bv rumors of an Intended extra dividend
oii the stock. Southern Pacific and St. Paul
showed sympathy. Tennessee Coal fluctu
ated violently on comparatively' small deal
ings. This about defines the limits of the
Important movements of the day.
Time loans were firmer In tone and it Is
probable that consideration of the money
outlook had a restraining efTect on the mar
ket. Purls renewed Its takings of gold In
the Indon market and the sterling rate de
clined In Iarls. The possibility of further
exports of gold from New iork Is thus
kept open. Receipts on account of Klon
dike gold are constantly replenishing the
New York supply now. It Is expected also
that the government bonds to be released
bv the return of government deposits on
Julv 15 will go promptly Into use for new
Issues of bank notes. This would add to
the available supply of currency and facili
tate an outward movement of gold. The
efTect of the subscription to the Japanese
loans seemed to le viewed Willi more un
certainty. Kven tho proceeds or the former
loan lert on deposit here in me suiii.
Ing In the loan account showed some tem
porary disturbance In the money market.
Satisfaction Is felt over the Intimation that
no withdrawals of the loan proceeds Is In
tended hefore the last of October. A large
proportion of the last Japanese loan re
mains on deposit In New York and is placed
In call loans here, so that the Japanese
government s handling of its balances might
have an important eneci on me isew iora
monev market. The favorable effect of the
weather on the wheat market was another
satisfaction to holders of railroad stocks.
The condition In Uie cotton market did not
Indicate much change In tho opinion on that
cron. The digestion of profits was persist
ent and as a rule the day's Important gains
are restricted to a few picked stocks. The
closing tone was Irregular.
Bonds were steady. Total sales, par value,
$4.3.19.000. I'nlted States bonds were un
changed on call.

CATTLE The weak and adverse condi
tions existing yesterday were felt again
today to some extent on the cattle hill and
the trade was rather unfavorable to the
selling Interests There was a fairly good
run for a Thursday, about 160 loads being
offered. The general quality of the receipts
was fairly good.
Beef steers constituted the big end of
the receipts today and there was some
pretty good stuff offered. On the early
murket there were a few sales made that
looked fully steady, but In the main buyer
were bearlah and wanted to buy the cattle
lower. Trading was very slow and dull,
and it was well along In the forenoon be
fore anything of consequence was done.
Buyers were out early, but took hold with
little strength and were not overly anxious
for supplies. Bids were unevenly lower,
some salesmen calling the market 10c off.
Other sales were made at prices that looked
fully steady with yesterday, while some
cattle changed hands at prices 5tyl0o lower.
The general market could best be quoted
steady to lower. Big heavy steers were in
rather poor demand today and were sluw
to move.
There was a fairly good string of cows
and heifers offered, but there was little
life to the trading and the market was
Slow and dull all through. Salesmen gen
erally were calling the market on these
kinds lower, although some sales showed
steady prices. Some hay-fed cows were
received and were hard to move and were
In poor demand. Buyers evinced little In
terest In the stuff and It was late before
anything like a clearance was made.
The market on good bulls, veal calves
and stags was Just about steady with yes
terday's prices, but poor bulls suffered a
decline and were about a dime off.
As has been the case for some time there
was a very light supply of stockers and
feeders and a correspondingly light demand.
What stuff was here sold generally at
about steady prices. Representative sales:

Ht OS W enkness was one of the salient
features of the hog market today, buyers
beltg slow to take hold and the general
tone of the Hading dropsy. There w is a
fairly good run for a Thursday, atKHit H4
loads lclng on sole The market was slow
In opening and there was little dune till
well along In the forenoon. Shippers picked
up some hogs early at good steady prices,
but other buyers were bonrish and wanted
sellers to take ofr some on the price. It
'R a dull market throughout, although
after actual trading was once under way
the most of the hoss brought about steady
prices Desirable light and medium weight
loads were preferred and were picked t p
first, as was the rase yesterday. The bulk
of the hogs sold at $5.224 u3 274, with the
popular rrice 86 X.
The trade was prolonged until after mid
day, the later market not being as good as
the early. The close of the market was not
only very slow, but the Inte sales were
niostlv V4fr6c lower than the opening.

SHEEP Today's receipts were fairly lib
eral, for the first time since Monday.
There was no market Tuesday and receipts
yesreruay were noi cnougn to make a test
of Ihe market. There la a good, strong
demand here for both sheen and lambs and
conditions are such that liberal receipts
seem to make little change In prices. Buy
ers were out early today and trading was
active. at'iHilles were wanted and the mar
ket ruled stronger. The receipts were of
fairly good quality, with only a few loads
of lambs on sale. There are no spring
lambs to amount to anything coming to
this market at presant, but the young stuff
received is in even better demand than old
sheep. A big string of Idaho wethers sold
loday at 85.60.
