CURRENT LITERATURE.

Indifference to wakefulness. 2. Concentra
tion of the mind on simple things. 3. Re
laxation of the body. 4. Gentle rhythmic
breathing of fresh air. 6. Regular nour
ishment." The Harpers announce that the sixth vol
ume In the "American Nation" series la
ready for Immediate publication. This vol
ume will be called Provincial America, and
Is written by Evarts B. Greene, Th.U.,
professor of history, University of Illinois.
It covers the early days of the. develop
ment of the American commonwealth, from
1690 to 1740, and is the first of the second
group of live volumes, under the general
heading of Transformation Into a Nation,
prof. Greene Is a specialist In the
period of which ha writes. After graduat
ing from Harvard, be became instructor
in history in that university, obtaining
his Ph.D. degree in 1853. Then followed
a few years' travel and study In Ger
many before he took up his work at the
University of Illinois, where he has been
professor of history for the past eight or
ten years. Prof. Greene has been
a frequent contributor to various historical
and educational periodicals, and has writ
ten a volume entitled The Provincial Gov
ernor In the English Colonies of North
America. Volume VI carries out the plan
for the entire series, as the editor, Prof.
A. B. Hart of Harvard university,
outlines It: "A history written by expert"
for laymen."
The Vlr Publishing company of Phila
delphia, has Just divided $500 In gold among
ten persons In the United States and one
In England for the name "Husband, Wife
and Home," which was adjudged tha
title best suited for Dr. Charles Frederic
Goss' new book, one to which men and
women sensitive to family friction and
alert to "the best means of correcting It
will turn for suggestion and relief.
D. Appleton A Co. have acquired the
Booklovers' Magazine of Philadelphia and
will publish It In New Tork under the title
of Appleton's Booklovers' Magazine, be
ginning with the July number. It Is said
that D. Appleton Sc Co. expect to greatly
Increase their sales of books and the effi
ciency of their advertising through Its
agency. It Is understood that the policy of
the magaxlne will be changed and that
the fact and Action of Appleton' best au
thors will be published In It serially. The
houso will naturally make an extraordinary
effort to have the first number published
tinder the new title a great success and
much Is to be expected of it.
So attractive and so varied are the ar
ticles In tha World of Today for July that
readers will find It difficult to decide what
to read first. Fot a 10-cent magaxlne the
quality of both the reading matter and the
illustrations Is remarkable. The wide In
terest In the municipal ownership problem
makes particularly timely the article by
Francis W. Parker on "Municipal Owner
ship and Graft."
For both timeliness and vivacity the July
number of the Atlantic Is a notable one.
The leading article, a plea for Publicity for
Express Companies, by Prof. F. H. Dixon,
Is a searching study of the vast but little
understood business of the express com
panies In this country which will open the
eyes of many people.
The summer number of Poet Lore Is one
of the most valuable Issues of this maga
line so absolutely indispensable to the
student of literature. The leading contribu
tion is a complete translation of Maeter
linck's new play, "Joyxelle," and like all
Poet Lore plays, the translation Is a
masterpiece, giving in English the very
life of the French original. Poet Lore
seems to gain in both literary value and
typographical excellence with every Issue.
If you want to feel glad that you are
alive and able to enjoy the wealth of out
door treasures that our magnificent country
affords. Just read the Country Calendar
for July. The luscious yellow-green canta
loupe of the cover well Indexes the seat
that waits within. The Country Calendar's
continued employment of the slncerest and
pleasantest outdoor literature, with Its
lavishly beautiful pictures and typography,
will keep It high in the Interests of those
who truly love "God's green earth."
