action taken by the County Hoard of
Equalisation on the large corporations and
wholesalers of Omaha. In the caw of the
Omaha Water company the assessment for
this year shows on Its face a reduction of
$5ft0,0no, but In the assessment for 1904 was
Included H.OOO.OnO for the franchise, which
Is cut out this year. The figures here given
are all on personal property and Assessor
Reed estimates that the total when made
up within a few days will show an Increase
over 19"4 of $2,600,000 to $3,000,000. I.ast year
the total of personal property assessment
was $47,856,000,
In the matter of the assessment of the
banks Mr. Reed has not yet completed his
figures on deductions, and the Increaso
shown In the table for all the banks is
imply bla estimate, based on figures mads
to date.
On real estate the only assessment made
this year is on new buildings. The assessor's
raises on this account totaled In round
numbers $1,600,000. Of this amount the
board probably has cut off close to $1,000,000.
The largest reduction from the assessor's
returns was In the case of the property on
lower N street In South Omaha. A large
section at this point has been fenced off
practically and Its value cut almost In half
by the construction of the O street viaduct.
This property Is now deprived of direct ac
cess to the stock yards and exchange build
ing and the traffic formerly using the street
Is now compelled to use the viaduct. In
that immediate vicinity, too, there has been
a shading of values which amounts to con
siderable. Redactions and Totals.
Other large reductions on the real estate
list were: Toung Men's Christian associa
tion, $128,000; Crelghton University Law
school, $u0,000; residence of Episcopal
bishop, $12,600; Millard hotel, $25,000.

HEARING MAY HAVE TO WAIT
Trial of Thomas L. Sloan Delayed
Beoansa of Witnesses' Failure
to Arrive.
There Is a possibility that thfc hearing In
the case of the United Btates against
Thomas L. Sloan, former United States
commissioner at Pender, which was set
for Tuesday morning, June 27, may have to
be continued, owing to the nonarrlval of
Important government witnesses.
Bloan Is under Indictment for submitting
a false report to the government of ccr
tain of his tranactlons in the matter of
. financial affairs pertaining to his office as
commissioner. The amount involved in the
erroneous report Is only about $15 and It Is
held by Mr. Sloan's friends that the error
Is simply a technical one which can be
easily explained as soon as Mr. Sloan Is
given an opportunity to do so. H. C.
Brome will represent Mr. Sloan In the trial
of the case.
