The close was mj'Vd lower. Corn opened 'd higher on American strength and advanced more on the scarcity of spot. , Tb close was (! higher. There was a good demand for July wheat t Chicago today from the shorts, dui there were few orferlnns. The buying was said to come from apprehension of delayed maraeilng or. wheat in tne soutnwesi on account of the rains. The demand for cash wheat vesterdav at that market was more urgent. There were sales of l'i.wO bushels. Holders asked for No. 1 27c over July. No. 2 red was nominally 11.08 In store. Minneapolis quoted No. 1 In store st KV.fMc over Jnlv. Kansas CUy bought a lot of No. 2 red wheat yesterday for shipment the Hrst half of July. There were flity-two cars on the sample tables there and very nine ae munil stoma lit the red wheat from Okla homa and southern Kansas was tine and of good color, testing 60 to 62 pounds The Minnesota weekly crop bulletin says there Is a little rust In Stevens and Brown counties, where oata are affected In small spots, but no rust has been reported on tna wheat. It savs that all grain crops are doing splendidly, but an early change to dry weather Is needed. The weekly crop bulletin from Indian Territory says that the wheat harvest progresses rapidly and Is Hearing completion over nearly an por tions of the section, with poor to fair yields and quality. It says that the oats harvest ts In progress, with fair to good yields, and corn Is needing rain. . "The situation In corn continues to be strong," said a Chicago trader today. We keep shipping It as fast or faster than we receive it and the receipts promise to give out before the shipping demand does. The July looks as though the shorts would force It higher." June a. -Notwithstanding nu merous reports of damage to the whest crop by wet weather the market here today closed easy as a result of liberal profit taking. Final quotations on July were off 4'y'c. Corn and oats are each down Sc. provisions are. a shade higher to 74c lower. Weakness In the lrh.ii marb nrai. I!.w4 Vt the start, initial ouotatlons on Julv be ing off 4o to V,c at Ki4o to sue. The open ing decline was mainly a reflection of lower prices at Ijverpool. Although additional rain had fallen throughout a large portion of the wheat belt, comparatively little apprehension seemed to be felt ainona Dlt trailers who so d uulte free v on tha sllerht decline in foreign markets. Commission houses were fair buyers, but the demand was not sufficient to prevent the price cf July declining to Wc. Suddenly, how tver. the market turned bullish. Prices made a quick advance. Julv selling un to 90c. The greatest strength was manifested In the July option, the reason being the high prices being paid for cash wheat (new crop) in the southwestern markets. A re port from St. Ixiuls stated that 81.00 per bushel was paid there for new No. 2 red. Another cause fer the sudden upturn was a report that while harvesting in Okla homa Is progressing rapidly, the yield Is only poor to fair. Shortage In yield was said to be due to chinch bugs and black rust. From the northwest simultaneously came reports of fresh damage by rust. Late In the session the market again turned weak. The reason was heavy liquidation of September by an Influential long. All the advance was lost, the final quotations on July being at 887i&'c. Clearances of wheat and flour were eo,ual to 27.600 bush els. Primary receipts were 183,700 bushels, compared with 259.3U0 bushels a year ago. Minneapolis, Duluth and Chicago reported receipts of 110 cars against log cars last week and 15 cars a year ago. Liberal profit taking by prominent hold ers caused a weak close In the corn mar ket. Throughout the greater part of the session a strong tone prevailed on active covering by shorts. The main cause of strength was' the depletion of local stock. July opened 4c lower at 544c, sold between 5440 and 64V, and closed at 644c. Local receipts were 411 cars, with 119 of contract grade. Reports of damage to the crop by heavy rains in the Ohio valley had a strengthen ing effect on the oats market, but the late weakness of wheat caused an easy tone at the close. July opened unchanged at 314c. sold between 314c and 814c and closed at 314c. Local reecipts were B6 cars. Provisions were easy on a 6c to 10c de cline In the price of live hogs. At the close September pork waa off bftVftc at 312.774. iJird was up a shade at 87.424; rins were off ZH6c at 17.724. NEW TORK, June 21 The speculative leadership lot which tha rang and Hie of email trudeis had teen waicuing in order to determine the direction ot their ven tures asserted itself In the stock market touay and whipped up a anarp price move ment and a cousldetable degiee of anima tion. It waa evident tnat tne outstanding snort interest nad been extended to un suspected proportions, owing to the templatidn to professional operators to laae tne short side in a very dull market, 'tne aemand from the uncovered snorts lormed an important element In extend ing tne advance when tne aggressive mar ket leadership had established itself. Tne ammunition employed by this leadership was not all of a very substantial charac ter and some of the Incidents ot toe day were of a kind that would have proved distinctly discouraging In a market where aepreswion was the order of the day. But the long resistance to repeated attack which the market has shown and the moderate success in the last two days of eftorts to get prices upwards had gath ered such cumulative effect that a com prehensive upward movement was the' re sult. A considerable volume of realising sales waa found to overhang the market. placed there by anxious holders who have been wailing lor an opportunity to sell their stocks. These were absorbed with a good deal of facility. It was not until late in the day that the movement to take profits began to make any effective drag on the advance. By that time a consider able portion ot the requirement from the short interest had been supplied. The early movement centered very largely In specialties, and I'nlted States Bleel pre ferred made an effective leader. Rumors of large orders for Russian naval recon truction were current, and something waa made of the published denial by ex-Pres ldent Schwab of an Intention to combine a number of independent corporations to compete with the united States Steel cor boration. It became known that the report or tne state superintendent of Insurance on the Equitable Life Investigation would be given out tonight and the hope was In dulged that this might be tne last episode of any sensational character in that long drawn out subject. Loubtful factors which were Ignored dur lug the day were crop damage rumors, a reduction in the price of refined sugar. a passing of the dividend on Corn Products preferred and declaration or tne regular dividend on Lehigh Valley Instead of a hoped for Increase and the discovery of fraudulent raising of stock certificates in Philadelphia. Any one of these Incidents would have unsettled the market at any time In the recent past. The closing of trust company in Philadelphia announced late today had a disturbing effect. The closing tone was in consequence unsettled and irregular. Bonds were firm. Total sales, par value. 84.240.0tt0. United States bonds were all un changed on call. As noted yesterday, the continued decline In prices was due al most wholly to the liberal receipts, and with a falling off of cattle today the mar ket took a turn for the better at all points. There was a good number of beef steers offered this morning and the market showed some improvement over yesterday, ihe ad verse conditions noted the first two days of the week were not In evidence today and there was a firmer feeling to the trade. wuyers were out early and seemed lo want supplies. Trading was fairly active and there was some little urgency to the de mand. On the best steers the market ruled generally strong to inc higher, with the commoner grades bringiog steady to strong prices. Rough and grassy klnos were In Detter snape man tney nave oeen ior some nays, but show little advance in price. Buyers picked up the cattle right along and a fair clearance was made in good season. The cow and heifer market showed Im provement, as did the steer trade, al though there was not as much advance noted. Trading was fairly active, buyers picking up the stuff in good season. The good, heavy cows sold at fully steady orlces. while in some cases good, strong prices were noted. The common grades ruled about steady. Bulls, veal calves and stags were in anout the same notches as yesterday, although there was a firmer feeling and more ac tlvltv to the trading. There was not a run ioaa 01 siocaers ana feeders in the yards today, and the odds and ends were on the lightish order, for which there Is but a limited demand. Prices ruled generally steady, although there was hardly enough stuff here to make a fair test of the market. Representative sales: BEEF STEERS. shipment. VI bales, stock, 35.071 No. At. Pr. No. Ar.
