NEW TORK. June 13. The movement of
stocks today reflected the further disap
pointment of professional operators over
the failure of any genersl Interest in the
market to revive as a result of the Equit
able Life nl:m of settlement and the pros
pert of penc In the far east. That is
shout all that can be said of the market
to offer any degree of enlightenment. This
feeling of disappointment was already pro
nounced yesterday, but a professional ele
ment of traders cherished a hope that tne
Irresponslveness of the market to the peace
prospects was due to tho general holiday
observed all over Europe. It wa with the
expectation that the resumption or opera
tions In foreign markets would show the
effect of the peace developments since the
adjournment on last friaay. mat tne locai
operators marked up prices late In the day
yesterday. The London market availed It
self of this opportunity this morning to
sell about 30.000 share of American stocks
In New vork.
The definite abandonment of any hope
of speculative revival on account of the
peace negotiations Immediately followed.
The professional element thereupon pro
ceeded to take steps to undo what they
had done yesterday and on Saturday, ine
bear operators, who had been driven to
cover, proceeded to renew their short con
tracts and tne small professional commit
ments on the long side were thrown over
gain. How closely these lines of con
duct were followed was Indicated hy the
relatively greater losses of those stocks
which have risen most since last Friday.
Such effect as the peace prospects pro
duced "n foreign mnrkets seemed more
than offset by renewed anxiety over the
Moroccan question. Snnie of the newer
phases of the Equitable Life affair were
not wholly relished In stocK maraet circles
nntablv tiie general arraignment of condl'

talned in Former President Cleveland's ac

favorable Interpretation In the commodities
market. Tho conditions reported for corn
and cotton were considered unsatisfactory
while much was made of the disappointing
vleld renorted from the winter wheat ne
fng harvested and the improved condition
of spring wiieat was ir.ictically Ignored.
The uninterrupted ease ruling In the
monev market took that subiect practically
out of consideration. Another payment by
the sub-treasury of $500,000 on account of a
telegraphic transfer from San Francisco
marked the further return of funds recently
transmitted to that point on account of
American Smelting company's purchase.
The stock matket showed no effective
power In the controversy and though the
last prices were not In nil cases at the low

CATTLE There wa a good run of cattle
here today, about i;5 loads being 011 sale.
There were also received sixty cars of cattle
billed .through and nut included in tne
above. Buyer were on the hill early and
the market opened In good season.
Oood cattle were wen represented In the
beef steer department today and there was
a good firm tone to the trade. Buyers evi
dently wanted the cattle and there wa a
fair activity displayed, on tne gooa Kinas
the market ruled generally strong and in
some case looked 10 cent higher. On the
common and rough kinds there was the
usual hesitancy on the part of the buyers
to take on the stuff, but tne cattle were
bought up fairly well at right around steady
prices. Cattle showing grass were negiecieu
as usual and were hard to move.
Good cows and heifers were In demand
and trading was fairly active. Buyer
wanted the good kinds and picked them up
at stronger prices. The Icsb uesliHble graaes
were in talr demand also ana sieaoy prices
ruled generally. The grassy, half lat, stuff
was not In a good demand and price on
these kind were lower.
Bulls, veal calves and stags were In fair
demand, with prices In about the same
notches as yesterday.
There was the usual light supply of Block
ers and feeders here today and the demand
was fullv equal to the supply. There was
no notable activity to the trade as the in
quiry for thi clas of cattle Is not heavy
at thi time. Price today looked a llttlo
stronger on the good kinds and steady on
the common grade. Representative ales:

cars for the corresponding two day of last
week. Although there Is a falling off of
receipts, the offerings o far aie much
better than last week, and owing to this
fact the sale show up much better. Last
week receipt consisted almost entirely
of medium grades, something packer were
not anxious for. Today, however, the
Quality of the receipt wa good and pack
ers evidently wanted this class of stulT, a
they were In the barn early and picked up
the offering in good season. The market
ruled generally steady with yesterday and
there was considerable activity to the
trade. The Oswald wet net e and yearlings
sold for $5.05, while two weeks ago this
stuff wa bought up at $4.75. The Gibson
P & N. lambs sold, as yesterday, at $6.25.
