SIX HEW RECORDS ' ' ARE MADE Llghtbodr of Chlraao Is the tar of the Occasion Iowa and Pardee Tie for Third Post. ' tlon. CHICAGO, June 3.-The ln,terco)leflate conference track and field meet on Marshall Field today not only turned out a brilliant victory for Chicago, but set sin new records for conference events and added several feet to the world's beat previous discus throw. Llghtbody of Chlcagfj was the star of the occasion. He won the one mtle event paslly,' Incidentally lowering the conference record" from 4:314 to 4:26. Then without apparent exertion he clipped 0:"H from the half mile record, making It In 1:67. In the two mile race there was another sensation, f". A. Rowe, hotly and closely pursued by hfs schoolmate Stone and by Lyon ff Chicago, won out rn 1:50.- This time .Is 0:124 faster than the previous record made by Kellogg of Michigan two years ago. E. C, Glover of Purdue and R. V. Norrls of Illinois tacked three-eighths of an Inch on to Dvorak's record-breaking performance In the pole vault, clearing the bar at 11 feet 9H Inches. Sew Discos Record. J. C. Garrets of Michigan, besides doing yoeman duty on the track threw the discus 140 feet Z inches, beating the previous world's record of 138 feet 4 Inches held by Sheridan of the New York Athletic club. Captain Friend of Chicago on his first at tempt shattered the running broad jump record. When the tape showed that he had made a leap of 23 feet Inch an attendant began digging up more turf to give the captain room according to his strength. Friend was a foot ahead Of his runner-up, French of Michigan. The day was somewhat warm, even for the spectators, but 5,000 of them, the largest number ever gathered here to see a track meet, braved the heat and applauded the contestants. Among the spectators was President Harper of the University of Chi cago. He saw his school triumph with ap parent satisfaction, and showed no signs 111-heaith. A rather stiff breeze from the southwest adds to the triumph of the rast time that was made on the track, as the wind was almost squarely in the faces of the sprinters. Thleaa-o Far In the Lrad. Chicago at all times had victory within Its grasp and little surprise was evidenced when the final reckoning showed a score of 6 points, compared with 38 for Michigan. jowa anu Purdue were tied for third place with 7H points each.
