Brad a tree la report ahowa a decrease In
the world a visible supply of wiieat for last
week of 2.100,000 bushels: for the week be
fore, $.2?,(aaj bushels. The corn decrease
waa 1.54,Ouo buahela, against $.2KW,000 bush
els the week before. The oata decrease
waa 1.163.000 buahela.
Corn receipt and caah sales ara larger
In Chicago than for aome time. Sales yes
icrday were 125.000 bushels, mostly No. 2.
Sales of oata were 300.000 buabels, including
150.000 buahela standard. At the seaboard
export aalea were 40,000 bushels of wheat,
120,000 buahela of corn and 80.000 bushels
of oata. Wheat stocks In Chicago public
elevators decreased 260.1a bushels last
week and corn stocks 650,646 bushels. The
Inter Oce-an aaya that millers will advance
the price of flour 2ftc a barrel today. The
prices on standard patents will be $6.20 In
wood.
The weather map is In the main a fa
vorable one, though In aome states the
ground waa so thoroughly oaked that corn
planting la yet light. One of the most
promlneat cattle feeders In Missouri says
"Missouri haa seldom had such a poor
stand of corn at this aeason." Morgan
county, Missouri, reports that the corn
haa been planted three times
The Chicago Tribune aaya today: "The
fact that Saturday will bo practically the
last oay on which corn received here, wnicn
will have to bt dried, will be available fo
delivery, haa stopped the bidding In the
country for prompt shipment, and the at
titude of the May price Is making the
farmer slow to sell on bids sent out on
the July bad for thirty daya' shipment.
Acceptance were small, it was said, how
ever, that farmer In Illinois and Iowa
were selling more freely to the country
elevators. Some cash men were predicting
that If the corn prices holds over 66c, re
ceipts will run from 40 to 800 cars a day
this week,' and perhaps 2.000,0ii0 bushels of
corn will have to be taken by the bulla.
J. A. Patten says: 'Yes. It looks as If there
were com In the country, and receipts will
be large for ten days, but we will take It

CHICAGO, Wy -Rcpnrt of rapid de

wrest rauseO btil11h sentiment In th
wheet pit here today. The July option
closed with a gain of lc Corn is up c,
Oats show c advance. Provisions ait
unchanged to 6c loner.
Strength in the wheat market came after
a rather weak undertone al the atart. In
fluenced by lower prices at Liverpool, tha
market here showed slight losses at th
opening, Initial quotation on July being
unchanged to c lower, at ! to !,'
The fact that weather tnroughout the west
and southwest waa much Improved helped
to bring out selling and resulted In a de
cline to 8c for July. Soon, however.
there commenced to be received crop re
ports from many sections of the winter
wiieat country claiming great deteriora
tion In the growing plant. Kansas City
snd Bt. Louis seemingly vied with each
other In the dissemination of svieh re
ports. The most damage waa reported from
Kansas, where it was estimated, the total
leld will not be over 75.omaio bushel.
May 1. the cron of thaf state was
placed at K.tmo.OOo bushels. That these
reports were In the main a oepted as
correctly disturbing the situation was
shown by the quick advance In prices.
Sentiment became extremely bullish on
urgent bidding by shorts. At 8"c, July
reached the highest point of the day. Dur
ing the Inst nalt hour a portion of the
gain wa lost on profit taking. The market.
nowever, closed strong, wiin juiy at
K"c. Clearances of wheat and flour were
equal to 43,5ii bushels The world s visible
supply, D.s shown b) Bradstreet. decreased
l.loo.ouo bushels. Primary receipt were
266.6H) bushels, compared with 261.000
bushels a year ago. Minneapolis, Duluth
and Chicago reported receipts of 193 cars,
against tsh car last week and 109 car a
year ago.
Sentiment In the corn market was bullish
and the volume of trailing was large. One
factor that greatly aided the bulls was
the strength of wheat. Another influence
was the weather bureau report, which
claimed much replanting of corn was
necessary owing to the continued wet
weather. July opened a shade lower, at
474j46c, sold tietween 47c snd 4Sc, and
cloned at 4c. Ixnal receipt were 449
cars, with lf of contract grade.
Notwithstanding the strength of wheat
and corn the oats market was quite weak
on liberal receipts early in the session.
I.ater shorts covered freely, causing a
complete recovery, the niark'et closing hrm.
July opened Sc lower, at 29Sc sold up
to 30c and closed al 29"c. lxcal receipt
were 244 cars.
Realizing sales by packers caused an
eanler tone In the provisions market. The
declining tendency was checked by the
strength of wheat and corn. At the close
July pork was off 6c, at tl2.57Vi. Lrd was
down Sc. at 17.30. Ribs were unchanged.

NEW TORK, May 13. The varying luctu
ation of ttie price level on the Stock ex
chage tody reflected a condition of uncer
tainly and of a good deal ot jii atlflcatlon
of the speculative mind. The mystery con
tinued to cenier around the source of tna
effective and Imposing selling of yesterday.
The uncertainty had to do with the natuie
of today buving and the question of lis
substantial motive. It was the genernl
supposition that yesterday's violent declines
would have a natural supplement today In
large additional selling oraers.
the level ot prices mst nigoi nun
generally below th extreme decline of last
month and, having broken through that
evel. the usual course In a epecuiauo
market 1 a considerable additional decline.
t became evident very quickly today, now-
ver, that neither the lmiiaJrmeni oi mar
gin nor the nervou feeling aroued i
yesterday weakness had resulted In any
considerable accession of the selling pres-
ure. Public announcement waa mane ai-
must Inmieriintel v of the SUStK'hSion Of the
Merchants Trust' company, and profeeslonal
hear traders followed ineir invananie rum
of buving stocks to cover short contracts
when the bad new which Induced the nort
selling has come out. There wa a very
general opinion that If the trouble of tne
trust company was tne maucemeni tu uit
selline of vesterduv. the process had been
considerably overdone, o mat it oenoovm
the ellers to retrace their course. Covering
of short contracts put out during the de
dine yesterday undoubtedly plsyed a con
slderable part In the wide recovery on ihe
second movement. This was shown by the
snecial tirominenre in the advance or the
stocks which suffered most on yesterday
decline. hen the urgent demand irom the
shorts had been satisfied the scarcity of
anv other buying tiecaine conspicuous and
hesitation and uncertainty overcame the
speculative mind again. Immediately news
ol the day had little to do with the course
of prices. The difficulties of the Merchants
1 rust company nave oeen generally unuer
stood for some time and their origin In old
standing conditions deprived the incident
of any power for violent effect. There is.
however, sufficient room for the drawing
of analogies and the recent expansion of
the activities of trust companies into new-
fields and the large additions to their num
ber have received active discussion.
The ease of money was unaltere. but
sterling exchange continues to advance.
The market was practically in a torpor
during the latter part of the day and prac
tically all of the day s gains were yielded
under very light pressure of selling. The
closing was easy and some ot tne maraei
leaders were below last night.

Wool Market.
BOSTON, May 23 W(H)1-The market
continues to strengthen and reports Indi
cate that the west is well Hold up, Montana
especially being covered up by contract on
actual sales. There is less trading among
dealers here, but this Is because a large
Cart of the speculative wool available had
een placed. There Is little doing In terri
tory wool on spot, but new wools are
eagerly taken at lull prices. The demand
for foreign and pulled wools is active. The
leading quotations are about as follows:
