BCRKETT PLAN IS FAVORED
Contention domination for Benator Im
presses Millard aa tba Taing.
EXPECTS TO HAVE SOME OPPOSITION
Senior Senator Saya To
Karly to Announce Who
Will Mnnane Ifle
Campntsn.
"That annnnnci'iiifi'l camn about In
tath'r an ausidrntal mannrr, belnK unin
tentional at tho time," wild Smiitor Millard,
In speaking of his candidacy fur re-election.
"However. It Ik trun that 1 lntrnd to b.s a
candidate to suco-ed myself. Many good
and earniBt friends through the Btate hai
been urnltiK me to itmko a declaration,
that tlicy would know Just what to ex
pect In the matter. They did not want to
bo In the position of getting pledged, even
by Implication, to someone else and so it
is Just as well that tho announcement was
made."
The senator said lie would not start In to
rnake un active canvass for some lime.
"I consider it altogether too early," said
Benatnr Millard, ' and for a few months at
leatt I shall have to be attending to other
business here In Omaha. As Is known, I
have been rather under the weather for
some time, but expect that being at home
and putting aside tho worries of publlo
life to n. large extent will enable me to
recuperate In good shape."
As he spoke the senator did not give much
Indication of being seriously Mlllng; in fact,
getting homo again and going about his
duties here seems to have been Just tho
tonic that was needed to restore to him
much of his old-tlmo robustness.
Speaking of the method to be followed In
the campaign for a renomlnatlon, Senator
Millard said ho expects that tho method of
nomination by convention is to prevail
hereafter in this state.
"That seems to bo settled in large
measure," said he. "While I have rather
favored tho old established custom, we
must bo willing to accommodate ourselves
to new conditions that find favor with the
people. In Nebraska hereafter tho con
vention nomination plan will prevail, so
far as I can Judge. Whatever suits tho
mass of tho republican party In such a
matter will BUlt me."
Ko .Manager Selected.
Asked as to the selection of a man to
direct his campaign, Senator Millard said
tie has not given the selection of a field
manager any thought as yet.
"My Indisposition and the press of other
business have kept me thinking of matters
entirely apart from my candidacy for re
election. Besides, it is too early yet to be
launching on the people an undertaking
of this kind."
On the question of possible opposition,
Eenator Millard frankly said ho expects
there will be other candidates. He had no
personal knowledge of who Is to enter
the listM, he said, and so did not care to
discuss that phaso of the campaign ahead.
An extra session of congress, to meet
in the middle of October, is regarded as a
certainty by Senator Millard, as It Is by
Ma colleague, Senator Burkett. In this
connection, mention having been mado of
the senatorial hearing on tne railway rate
question, the senior Nebraska senator said:
"It was with the keenest regret that I
found myself unable to attend and par
ticipate In tho sessions of the committee.
That promises to bo one of the most
memorable hearings ever held In this coun
try on the subject, and tho character of
tho men taking part on both sides cannot
fall to bring results. Any man could have
gained valuable Information and enlighten
ment on the great question at issue from
attending those sessions."
