Reports of bis; damage to wheat In the southwest ty grain experts at a (train dealers' convention at Entd, Okl.. were primarily responsible for the Stampede of the market yesterday by the bulls. Today dvlce from that section are conflicting. W. R. Houston of Kansas City confirms the opinion expressed at the convention. He wires- from Streng City, Kan., hat he was In Oklahoma yesteYday and saw pros pects for ehoul two-thirds of a crop. In southern Kansas, he says, the same con dition prevails. J. C Crlstopher of Kansas City holds a different view and Bays that he cannot feel that the situation Is alarm ing. He says the prospect In Oklahoma Is for $.04i,flfjQ bushels more wheat than last year and In Kansas ao.OOO.OOo more. Oram dealers met yesterday In Des Moines and said that less than one-half the corn crop of the state was planted, and t hat l)i low places it would be a week or ten Days behind, even 'with the most favorsble weath?r. The lateness of corn planting Is retting to be a subject of Com ment with the trade In all the markets. In a special to the -Adams drain company. 81. Louie wired that much corn In southeast Missouri . has rotted and will have to b repla. rated. Liverpool closed 4'&ld higher on wheat. and 41 Nd higher on corn. There was considerable excitement at the opening, on account of - unfavorable American crop reports, ana tnere was a strong advance. but a later easiness. The Increase In corn prices at Liverpool Is due to small Argen tins, shipments and strength In the spot situation. Rroomhail has the following to say about conditions In Argentina. "Weekly Argen tina wheat markets are now very firm, as the result of a geod export demand. Ar rivals from the Interior are not so large, hHng now moderate, while the quality continues satisfactory. The weather has been favorable and sowing Is well ad vanced. The wheat area Is likely to ex ceed that of last year by 10 per cent. The corn markets are now Arm, with & good rtemsnd for export. Denial of sensa tional reports of crop damage led to ex treme weakness In the wheat market here today, the July delivery closing with a loss of 24c. Corn is down ifa4c. Oata shew a l'ss of c. Provisions are off ttf 15c. The wheat market was weak from the start. An advance of over Id at Liver pool; initial quotations here were sharply lower, July being oft 4&4c to Vfclc at WWiftc. The cause ol such radical re action from yesterday's extreme bullish ness was lack of confirmatory advices re garding alleged serious damage to wheat In tlve southwest. Reports today, more over, not only did not confirm Ilia numer ous stories of da ma by rust and Hessian flies, but some of yesterday's advices were absolutely denied. The tone of telegrams in many cases was completely changed. One report today claimed that the crop of Oklahoma this year would exceed that of last year by 6.OUO.U00 bushels; thst the total yield of Kansas would exceed last year's crop by 2u,u0n,i bushels. In addi tion news from the northwest was de cidedly In favor of bears. Receipts showed a marked Increase, while weather In the spring wheat country was much Improved. Primary receipts were large and the mar ket for cash at Kansas City was weak. From the beginning selling wss general and with only a moderate damand from shorts .prices continued to decline. At Hc July reached the lowest point of the day. The market closed weak with July at 874c. Clearances of wheat and hour were equal to 124,100 bushels. Primary re ceipts were 843,900 bushels, compared with 147,700 bushels a year ago. Exports of flour and whsat for the week, as shown by Bradstreet s, waa equal to 1.B12.OU0 bush els. Minneapolis. Duluth and Chicago re ported receipts of 166 cars Against Mi cars last week and 91 cars a year ago. Mainly In sympathy with the break In whept, the corn market was weak the en tire session. Another factor that added a the bearishness was an Increase In the movement from the farms, arrivals here today being considerably In excess of those estimated. Trading In the May option was comparatively quiet. July opened 44c to 444c lower at 484(&4!4c, sold off to 477fcC and closed at 4fr4c. Local receipts were 129 Cars with 6 of contract grade. Weakness of wheat and com was the principal reason for a weak undertone In the oats market. Increased receipts also contributed to bearish sentiment. July opened 4c to 4jfc lower at 29(&2!l4c to 30c, sold down to &"mc and closed at 294c. Local receipts were 159 cars. A decline of 5fF10c in the price of live hogs had a weakening influence on the provisions market. Tradlhg was very quiet. At the close July pork was off 124 fcl&c at jllBodTi WH. Lara uno rios were each down 24'bc at $7.324'g7.35 and 17.25, respectively. Estimated receipts for tomorrow: Wheat, 4 cars; corn, 67 cars; oats, 165 cars; hogs, lS,no bead. HEAVY SELLING OF AMERICANS ABROAD In game Cases U Level Is Below that ot Violent Decline t Last Week In - April. . 1 e" NEW YORK, May 19 The stock market was subjected lo consldersble further liquidation today, but It showed evidence ot relief for the processes offered some effective resistance to the depression. In the course of the declines the low prices rea-chea in many cises were below Uiose touched on the violent decline in the lat ter part of April. In no case was there a great extension of the loss beyond that point, and a larger proportion of stocks were held above It. rrofeesldnal operators in stocks are accustomed to pay great attention to such an evidence of re newed resistance In the neighborhood of the same level at which a decline, was checked not long before. The arrest of the liquidation during the course of the day for this reason proved1 very encourag Ina to the professional element. The eany liquidation was large and quite urgent and that for roreign account mane up an im portant element In the. market's weannees. It Is supposed that the extension of sen sational advertising methods followed in a recent campaign against stock prices in this country to the columns of foreign ad vertising mediums helps to explain the foreign selling and some special pressure upon the market attributed to a Boston orlsin a-oes to the- same source for expla nation. Yeaterday's violent declines had the natural effect of Including calls for additional margins and collateral and the resulting effect of considerable orders to sell out. The first hour proved the most active of the day. The sharp break in the wheat market gave rise to the surmise that some of yesterday's alarm over the croos mav have been unfounded or pre mature. This was a factor In steadying the market for stocks. There was a dls nonltlon too. to revise yesterday's estl mates of the sianlflcance of the withdrawal of the Harrlman representatives from the Board of Directors in the Northern Pa cific. More Impression was caused by the fact that it was already known yester- dav. indeed, that tne Harnman siock hoinlniis had been voted for the new di rectors. There was some disposition late in the dm- Ulan to discount a noor bank state ment for tomorrow. The taking up of government deposits has Involved a loss to the subtreasury by the banks of up wards of $8,tM.Ouo, while the offsetting gain on the Interior movement la estimated at onlv about 2,OOu,0H). Some large changes In the loan and deposit Items are proD able, owing to the large financial trans actions that have occurred during the week The extreme ease of the money market tndav. however, orecluded any se rious uneasiness over the showing by the hnnks. The Derslstent weakness ot tne United States Steel stocks Impaired the Influence of the support in the rest of the market and their decline to the lowest of the day made the closing weak. Prices ruled generally steady, although in some cases .-sales . . looked stronger. Common grades, as lias been the case all week, were lisrd to move at tne prices, but buyers seemed to want the stuff and picked up about everything, both good and common. There was a lair sprinkling or cows and heifers here this morning and included some good csttle. The feeling on this class of stuff was a little firmer than yesterday and tnere seemed to lie 1 good demand Tor the cattle. The receipts for the five days of this week have held up fairly well, there being about 17.000 on sale, as compared to 19.400 last week. There has been very little change In conditions all week, buyers taking hold In good shape and have been anxious for anything good and bid about steady prices on commoner grades. Receipts have consisted largely of common grades and there has not been much choice stuff t-ffered, but the feeling on tat sheep and lambs has neen good and prices have ruled steady to stronger every day, or 15 25c higher for the week. The H. O. Harkness shorn ewes sold here today at $4 90, while some Mexican ewes brought 84.75. The market today could best be called generally stuady. with trading active on what little was here. .
