PITCHERS' BXTTLE HAS QUEER ENDING
Seven losing; of Close Work Closes
with Two Rounds of Genuine
SlnggJnor nnd Omaha Gets
the Short End,
In a game of keenest Interest from start
to finish Omaha lost to St. Joe by the score
of 6 to 6. And except for last Sunday tho
largest crowd of the season was out to sett
Pa's boys get a drubbing at the hands of
the Saints from down tho river. First om
team was showing the way and then tho
other would pilot for a time, but the Saints
piloted last. They ought to win one game
out of three, for look at all of the old
timers they have who sie not used to being
licked.
Omaha made eleven hits to their nine,
besides three sacrlflco hits on the side of
the homy team, Thomas had seventeen
putouts and the home boys made twenty
assists, showing that tho ir.fleld had plenty
to do. Llehhardt was In good form and.
.except In the ninth Inning, when he ap
parently purposely panned Andrews to first
with two out and two on bases, he wu
able to head off any long hits. This cost
the game, for with the bases filled Qullllti
men scored, leaving the Saints one to the Ketchem, cf
a-ood J lemln. If
'fa- v M ! Luzotte. rf
Omaha scored one In the fifth Inning find loiiRlas, lb
It looked for a time as If the game was to I Andrews, Sb
end 1 to 0, repeating the performance ot
the day before, but the fates had not so
ordained. Schlpko walked and Gondlng
bunted him to second nnd both were safe.
Liebhardt went out from the pitcher to
first. Thiel hit the ball to the pitcher, who
fired it to Zlnram to catrh Schlpke, but the
catcher dropped the ball and Omaha had
cored. A double ploy on Carter's fast one
to Peer ended the Inning. Douglas got the
ball to Zlnram In time to catch Gondlng at
the plate.
Hero Coca tho Game.
No more scoring was done until the
eighth, when St. Joe made three in Its
half and Omaha came back with four, leav
ing them two to the good. This was too
dlssy a height for the local team, so tbey
ram singled to Thiel, but the latter got the
ball to Gondlng In time to catch Andrews
at the plate. St. Vraln went down from
Dolan to Thomas.
Carter reached first by beating out a bunt.
Welch walked and Dolan drove the ball at
the pitcher, who caught Carter at third.
A parsed ball advanced each a base and
Thomas' single, his third hit of the day,
brought them both home. Thomas went to
second on the throw-in and to third on a
wild pitch. Martin struck out and Schlpke
hit the ball right down the third base lino
for a double, scoring Thomas. Gondlng
sent tho ball by Mr. Andrews for a single
and Schlpke scored. Four hits, a wild
pitch, a passed ball and a base on balM
had given the Champions four runs. This
left Omaha two to the good, but the Saints
came in with fire, in their eyes and went
after Mr. Liebhardt In a way that he will
remember.
Liebhardt Went Wrong.
Ketchem walked and Fleming singled and
they both advanced a base on Lazotte's out
from the pitcher to first. Douglas Htruck
out and matters began to look better for
orr boys. But rlsht hero is where Mr.
Lk-bhardt went wrong, for he purposely
passed Jay Andrews to first Just as If he
was some Lajole who was apt to knock
the cover off the ball. This filled the bases
and when Qulllin found one that suited him
and drove it to the fence for three bases
tho game was over, as It scored Ketchem,
Fleming and Andrews.
The Saints have gene and Sioux City will
be on hnnd this afternoon for their first
try at ra s Champions. Attendance 1 4C0
the "ninth the Underwriters started after
Hickman, crossing the plate four times.
