Cash wheat Is stronger In the northwest
and has advanced materially ut Minneap

some mills In that state have been loreed

Reports ol damage In the southwest ore
coming mostly by way of Kansas City. A
man of Hall-i!:ikrr s llrm In that city
writes from learned, Kan., that wheat has
jKone backwards from 7 to 10 points. Sedg
wick. Kan., reports strong winds and dry
ing weather, with complaints from the
farmers. A special to Sunderland At l'p
dlke from Woodson at Kansas City says:
"A largo elevator company, operating forty
stations In Kansas, says the yield of wheat
will be disappointing. It will not be within
26 per cent of what was expected thirty
days ap.o." Complaints of rust come also
from Texas and Oklahoma. Naponee, Neb.,
says the wiic.U there Is beginning to look
yellow In spots, though no reason can he
assigned for It, as the weather has been
favorable. The Chicago papers are quoting
from l'rof. Uruner of the intversity of
Nebraska on the HchbIoii fly. He says
that the plants look line, but appearances
are deceptive, as the wheat does not begin
to show the real damage done by the tly
until It begins heading, lie mentions the
activity of the flv last fall.

Today's Record-Herald says: "Grant W.

Heotember wheat on the Kansas Cilv ex

nave been largely hedged by sales or juiy
in Chicago and elsewhere. He hgured this
as a sound position, as a crop condition
that would result In failure to make liberal
deliveries of July wheat In Chicago in
July would certainly bring the southwest
ern prices to a higher level. Mr. Kenney
' believes that a ureal deal of wheat will
come to Chicago this year from Kansas
tilv And tha southwest."
Regarding yesterday s situation at Chi
cago, the Inter-Ocean of today says: "A
sensational play was made by the leading
Interests In July wheat yesterday. Prices
were forced off lc to 844c. about midday
by Valentine's open selling. The market
looked weak until within fifteen minutes
of the close, when orders were given for
brokers to buy l,000,ouo bushels. August
Brosscau started the buying at 84'c and
took 5OU.00O btiBhels. the others following.
They found the market comparatively baro
of offerings and the price shot up to KoVse,
where It closed. Only a part of the orders
wero filled, as the wheat was not to be Had
Apparently the parties giving the orders
knew they would not be executed, and
wanted to make a strong close.
The Chicago Tribune ouotes from B. H.
Slaughter as follows: "Foreigners have
been rather steady buyers of September
wheat and to some extent of July for some
time. This demand shows that Europe is
Soing to need more of our wheat and is not
issatlsfled with present prices. The small
supplies of (dd wheat everywhere make the
July situation strong. It is at least three
quarters ah old crop future and with any
mishap at harvest, almost entirely so. In
view of the high prices being paid for cash
wheat. It, looks as though July ought to
do better and the trade Is beginning to
recognize Its posibllltles.

CHICAGO, May -The price of wheat
for July delivery advanced V a bushel
here todsy. Dwindling receipts In the
I'nited Slates and higher t rices at Liver
pool were amot.g the chief causes. The
market closed at the highest point of the
day. Corn phows a guln of V)4c Oats
r practically unchanged. Provisions are
off 7'jo.
The wheat market was strong from the
Mart. At the opening July was up lc to
n nt l-ne to Vo. There was a rush to
buy the Julv option. rommlsMon hmises and
shorts vlelng In efforts to secure the spar
ing quantities offered. A sharp advance at
Minneapolis, suggesting possible dmnge
to the spring sown crop by cold, wet
woither was one of the vital reasons. An- j but
otnor r.ictor was the strong tone or Liver
pool cables, unusually light shipments from
Australia being hirgely Instrumental in
causing the advance In the foreign grain
market. Kceelpt nt the principal grain
enters In America were very small. Only
one car arrived at Chlcigo today, ue-
mand increased as the session advanced.
and prices continued to move In an upward
llrectlon. A lw reports were received
from the southwest telling of damage by
rust. One report from Nebraska claimed
that much damage hsd been done by a
severe hailstorm. During the last few
minutes of trading the demand became ex
ceedingly urgent and the market closed at
the highest point of the day with July at
S7V4. Clearances of wheat and flour were
103,1100 bushels, compared with l.w.ao bush
els a year ago. Minneapolis, Duluth and
Chiengo reported receipts of S9 cars, against
101 last week, and 91 cars a year ago.
Influenced by the advance In wheat the
corn market had a strong undertone. Pre-
Ictlons of additional rain also tended to
rente bullish sentiment, the prevailing wet
weather being a serious hindrance to plant
ing operations. Shorts were the best buy
ers. July ooened He higher at 4i cents,
sold between 4fi7frc and 4"i4 tMTC nnd closed
nt the hltchest point of the day. IOcal
receipts were E0 curs, none of contract
grade.
Oats were firm In sympathy with other
grains. Trading was very quiet, the re
vived Interest In wheat drawing many lead
ers 11 way from the oats pit. July opened
unchanged to a shade higher at L'!"i Wc
to l'Vc. sold between a" ,c and 29VU -SMjC.
and closed at 'ir. Local receipts, hi cars.
Receipts of live hogs todiiv were double
the amount estimated yesterday, and the
unexpected Increase In arrivals had a weak
ening effect on provisions. Provisions were
moderate sellers. Demand was scattered.
At the dose all of the July options were off
,'c, porn closing at liz.40: lard at I1..1M1
and ribs at I7.2m.i7.25.
Estimated receipts for Monday: Wheat.
(! cars; corn, 4a cars; oats, 65 cars: hogs,

LONDON, May 13 Money was more
plentilul in the market today and rates
were easier, owing to the redemption of
lo.ooO.COJ in treasury bills. Discounts wero
easier on the prospects of the arrivals of
bar gold being taken by the Bank of Eng
land next week. Trading on the Stock ex
change opened quiet and cheerful, but later
consols were a shade easier. Home rails
were irregular. Americans opened firm
and generally Inactive at around parity.
They sagged later and closed steady. For
eigners generally were firm, especially con
tinentals. Imperial Japanese government
6s of 1904 were quoted at liio.
BERLIN, May 13 On the Bourse today
the transactloos wero limited and the
usual Saturday dullness prevailed.
PARIS. May 13. Prices on the Bourse to
day wero firm at first, but subsequently
weakened on an unconfirmed rumor of an
attempt on the life of the Russian emperor.
Russian imperial 4s were quoted at 88.40
and Russian bonds of 1904 at 5 10.

CATTLE There were a few bunches of
cattle in the yards this mornlnjr, but not
enough to make a fair test of the market.
For the week receipts are aDout 2,000 neau
heavier than thev were last week, and as
compared with the same week of last year
there Is very little difference. The demand
has apparently been of limited proportions,
except for the more desirable grades, and
as a result a rather slow, indifferent mar
ket has been experienced on most days.
The more desirable grades of beef steers
are closing not a great deal different from
tne close 01 last ween, ine nrst tnree
days of the week packers pounded the
market in bad shape, but the feeling tho
latter half of the week was a little better,
so that the choice grades are not over
weak to a dime lower than Uiey were at
the close of last week. The common to
medium grades are around IOiS'ISo lower,
and some salesmen quoted thorn KK&20O
lower. It has been a very irregular mnr
ket, so that some saleB have looked much
better than others. Good to choice steers
mav be Quoted from o. io'iib.25: fair to
good, $5.25(fKi.75; common to fair, $4.O01jS.15.
The supply of cows and heifers has not
been heavy this week, and with a fair de
mand prices have not shown a great deal
of change. Choice handy weight cows and
heifers have sold exceptionally wen ana
such kinds are a little higher than they
were a week ago. The general run of stuff
Is about steady, and In some cases some of
the commonest kinds may be a Bhade
easier. The change, however, Is so small
as to be hardly worth mentioning. Good to
choice heifers may be quoted from $4,755?
$5'25; good to choice cows, $4.&W5.0O; fair
to good cows, $3.9o4.40; common to fair
cows. $1.75413.16.
Bulls are about steady for tne week, and
so are stags. Good to choice bulls sell from
$3.90ijf4.50; common to fair, $2.25f(f3.75. Veal
calves are a nine stronger, oest graues
selling up to $6.25.
Very few stocKers una reeaers arrived
this week, nnd not many were wanted, as
farmers seem to be too busy with their
work to come to market for stock cattle.
Something strictly choice In the way of
heavv. fleshy feeders would probably sell
not far from Bteady with a week igo, but
anything a little lacking In quality Is 15fj
26c lower. Strictly choice light cattle to
go on grass are also not far from steady,
but common ngnt sturr is almost unsalable
and lfVrr25c lower. Good to choice heavy
cattle are quotable from s4.iniui.i; good
to choice light cattle, n.nniM .na: common
grades of all weights sell from $3.00 down.

HOGS There was auout a normal Sat
urday's run of hogs here today, but as re
ports from otner points were very bearish,
Chicago being quoted about a dime lower,
the market here eased off to some extent.
At the opening the decline amounted to
6'a7c, but later on tho market weakened
a little more, so nun me general mai'Kci
could be 1 be described by calling it 0WI00
lower, or generally 7c lower. The long
string went at $5.20, with a few hogs at
$6.17 and some of the choicer loaus at
$6 22. As high as $5.25 was paid for choice
hogs, me Close was rauier siow, witn tne
feeling weak, but most everything sold at
an early hour.
For the ween receipts snow a loss as
compared with last week of about 2,50o
head, and as compared witn tne same week
of last year there is very little change.
The market has fluctuated up and down to
quite an extent and closing prices are about
6ai0o lower than those in force at the close
