aided by a strong torn market. The high

During the last hour of trading sentiment
became boarish, the depressing influence
being the Ohio crop report, which mada

easy tone prevailed at the close, with July

Hcntlment In the corn market was bullish.
caused to a- large extent by the Congested

comparatively light. An estimate of mnall

NEW YORK, May 8 -The stock market
settled back today Into dull trading and
sluggish price movementa such as ap
proached at times to stagnation. Transac
tions fell to a smaller aggregate, than for
any full day' trading since the last week
In March Any such violent disturbance ns
the fall In prices which culminated on Mon
day Is almost certain to be folkwvod hy A
series nf diminishing fluctuation as prices
seek their normal level. With the specu
lative factors out qf the market the range
of prices becomes narrow and the market
Inert, offering little attraction for opera
tions by professionals who seek their ad
vantage entirely in the changes in the price
level. It was demonstrated. pretty promptly
today that the upward movement of prices
of yesterday whs but one of the oscilla
tions Incident to the subsidence of the spec
ulation. Stocks came upon the market with
some freedom todav and the definite down
ward tendency established scattered the
hopes of such speculators as had been In
dications of a revival of speculation In yes
terday's movement.
The market calls for little comment and
the news of the day bearing on Its move
ments was unimportant. Most of the dny'a
business was done in the first hour and an
unusual large part of that was for foreign
account. There was nothing In the general
situation abroad to account for this pres
sure, but it waa intimated that a consid
erable account In Americans was being liq
uidated from Holland hy way of Ixindon.
The special pressure upon I'nlon Pacific
and upon the 1'nlted States Steel stocks
was of large sentimental influence on the
whole market. Much lias been hoped from
the I'nlted States Steel shares to lend the
market In an expected revival of strength
and their weakness was correspondingly
disappointing. Northern Pacific was rushed
up some seven points to well above the
nominal quotation prevalent for the stock
before the Northern Securities dissolution
brought it hack to the Stock exchange list.
Rumors were circulated that an Increase In
the dividend was Intended. The violent ad
vance seeded to Intimidate rather than to
help sentiment, the market tradition re
specting this stock fostering it nervous view
of Its Influence. The price sunsequently fell
hark to a point below last night. There
was no news to explain the general weak
ness, which was rather a negative deduc
tion from the failure of the points nf the
strength tn sustain the market. The ap
parent nnralvsls of the demand caused
rrnwlnir susnlclnn of the stability of the
market and led to the weak closing In
which T'nlon Pacific and New York Central
were principal sufferers.
Ronds were heavy. Total sales, par value,
t2.2i.flcO. I'nlted States bonds were all un-
rba,nged on call.

CATTLE There was a very light run of
cattle at all points tills morning and aa a
result tnere was some improvement In ihe
market, mere was notmng excited about
tne market, however, aa packers did n t
seem to like tne iaaa of paying more money
na aid not appear as anxious tor uppnea
as they did a short time ago. Theie Is,
however, a much better tone to tne traae
than tnere was a week ago.
The more desirable graues of beef steers
Could be quoted active snd fully a uime
nlgher. As high a $6 was paid lor pretty
good cattle, which is the top price for
some little time. Nothing strictly prime
was offered. When !t came to part-fat
cattle and to those of common quality the
market was not particularly active, and
while In some cases the prices paid for. that
kind looked a little higher. In others salea-
men were unable to get mo.e than steady
nr.ces. The cattle kept changing - hands
and owing to the light receipts the market
came to a' reasonably early close. There
were practically no western hay-fed on
ale.
The cow market wa fairly active and
around a dime higher on the better grades.
The same as wa the case with steers, how
ever, the common and medium grades were
not very active, and In the majority of
cases salesmen were unable to get much
more than steady pdicea. Buyers seemed to
be more anxious tor tne gooa stun man
they have been for some little time, but
were rather Indifferent on the common
kinds.
Bulls, veal calves ana etags all sold at
good steady price.
There were comparatively few Blockers
and feeders Included In the recelpta and no
quotable chsnge In the market took place.
Sneculators all seemed to want a few good
cattle snd such kinds sold very freely. The
common cattle were more or less neglected
the same as usual, but the prices paid were

SHEEP There were only ten cars re
ported this morning and while It wa a
small run for a Wednesday it was appar
ently large enough to meet the requirements
of the trade. Packers did not seem to care
whether or not they got any freh supplies
of either sheep or lambs, and the market
could beVt be described by calling It sluw
and barely steady with yeaterday. Borne
stuff that was carried over from yesterday
sold to a little better advantage, but on the
other hand some of the other sales looked
a little lower. The quality of the offerings
was Inferior and that of course had a ten
dency to make buver indifferent. Most f
the stuff sold In fairly good season, but It
was late-before' a complete clearance was
made. Packers still complain that the de
rnandtormutton is of very, limited propor
tions. . ....
