CHICAGO GUAM AND PROVISIONS
Features of the Trading and Closing
Prices on Hoard of Trade.
CHICAOO, April ffl.-Hlgher prices at
Mverpo.il had a strengthening eneot on
the market here today. Bullish sentiment
was augmented hy reports of damage by
rust to fall-sown wheat In Texas. The
market closed firm with July up SfjVic.
May is tip, c. Corn shows a gam ol So
cials are practically unchanged. Pro
visions art down 2c to 2oc.
Notwithstanding a continuation of excel
lent weather conditions throughout the
iiuru .--iiiies a degree of conlidence on
the buying side of tne wheat market that
had not been met for some time past was
In evidence. A part of the bullish senti
ment was attributed to the seeming In
diflerence ot holders of Mav wheat, the
volume of trading In that option being very
light throughout the session. Another fac
tor was strength at Minneapolis, resulting
from a good rah demand Mluher itr-teea
at Liverpool formed a clincher In decisively
establishing the dominance of bullish sen
timent, on the other hand, weather con
ditions were decidedly unfavorable to a bull
campaign. Keports by a St. Louis trade
paper furnished encouragement to the
i-ears, tho claim being maue that the yield
of winter wheat this year will be unusually
large. The market was firm from the
start. Initial ipiolatlons on May were up
94rilc at B'V(irt!ii'. . ilv was a shade lower
to htc higher at 8'.!Vfl3o to S3Vo. A little
pront-taking In May soon carried the price
of May down to 8?c, but a quick re
covery soon followed. After touching biVtfi
Wc, July gradually advanced, and tor the
remainder of the day held within 83c and
K'.Vic. One of the leading bulls was cred
ited with moderate purchase of the July
option. A report from Waco, Tex., stating
that red rust was prevalent In the wheat
fields of that section started considerable
buying on the part of pit traders late In
the session. The market closed tlrm, with
July at KJViSHHc Final quotations 011
May were at 8X)c. Clearances of wheat
and flour were equal to SD.iAJU bu. Exports
for the week, according to Uradstreet's,
were equal to l,2itt,0ii0 bu. Primary receipts
were 317, o0 bu., compared with 133,2ii0 by.
a year ago. Minneapolis, Duluth and Chi
cago reported receipts or 14S cars, against
7s cars a year ago.
Buying of a big line of May corn created
a firm tone In the corn market. Shorts took
alarm and covered freely. Higher prices at
Liverpool had a bullish effect. July opened
a shade lower at 4ac. sold between 4til,n'(?
j41c and 4hc and closed at 4iHV 4t'Vc. Local
receipts were 11m cars, wiin o cara ui v.-ui-1
1 a ct. grade.
The chief feature of trading In the oats
market was buying of May and selling of
July by cash houses. The market was In
fluenced largely by tne nrm tone 01 corn.
Excellent weather was a bear factor. July
opened unchanged to Vc lower at -v?
:!574iC, sold up to 2c ana cioseu ai io-,u'
!9c. Local receipts were 72 cars.
Havv liquidation of May pork had a
weakening effect on the provision market.
Another depressing Influence was a de
cline In prices for live hogs. At the close
July pork was d.own lTftZOc at xu.utvw

NEW YORK, April 28. Effective support
today checked the demoralized tone which
threatened the market and quieted the spec
ulative excitement with the result of a
subsidence of activity and a steady tone
until sudden extreme weakness again set
In In the last fifteen minutes. During
tne progress of the recovery the nverago
prices was lifted above last night and
some considerable gains were established.
specially in tne nortnsjoeiern railroad
group and the trunk lines.
After yesterday s downward plunge there
as a fear that the further prices declined
he more pressure there would l to sell
ocks. Tills nimrehenlnn whs sufflrlentlv
justified by the hoavy liquidation this
morning which was caused by the uneasl-
icss throughout the country resulting from
the heavy declines of yesterday. With
nrelns materially lmnnlred and the fear
of still larger losses to be faced the urgent
desire to sell is easily understood. Sup
port was attempted at the opening and
the more cheerful tone of forelirn markets
iday aided tho effort. Prices of Americans
In London were lifted considerably above
last night and there was liberal buying
In New York for foreign account after the
radlng began, but thene gains quickly dls-
ppeareo unuer tne tiooa 01 liquidation
hlch came into the market from all quar-
ers. It was only by the most vigorous
measures of support that the market was
saved from demoralization again during
the first honr. Enormous nmnunta of
storks passed through the market In that
period in mo course or contest between op
posing forces. The trading In the first
hour in fact made tin the bulk of the
ansactlons for the whole dav. The rhlef
fear of speculative holders evidently was
the Instability of the market rather than
ny actual developments nffectlng values
nd when the sunnort had demonstrated
Its effectiveness sufficient assurance was
Imparted to dissipate the urgent desire to
sen. i nere was evidently a large short
Interest left open also. The failure of
confirmation of some of the alarmist ru
mors which circulated yesterday impressed
tne sellers or stocks with the Idea tnat
there had not been good grounds for their
action and had Increased the disposition
to rebuy. While the resignation of the
ead of the Missouri Pacific system from
he I'nlon Pacitlc board was discussed
1th seriousness, the effect on the market
was lessened by the relative flrmneos of
Missouri Pacific and the rood sunnort of
Linon paciiic.
The forecast of the currency movement
for the week gave promise of a consld
rable Increase In the cash holdings of the
banks to be shown In tomorrow's bank
tatement. The mnrket continued to show
nervous and uncertain undertone In BDlte
f the marked falllne off In transactions
and there seemed a disinclination on the
part of the buyers to follow the advance
in prices, ine persistent strength in tne
foreign exchange market, supposed to be
ue to preparation for remittances to Jap
anese loan subscriptions. Is not liked.
Discounts were firm in Tokio today and
the price of sterling at Paris declined.
Next week Is payable one-half of the sub
scriptions to the $100,000,000 of Pennsylvania
convertible bonds with the privilege to
subscribers to pay in the full amount.
he nervousness of the market was easily
seen from the quick response to the late
break In Louisville & Nashville to 144.
Ixeomotlve and General Electric also made
disconcerting plunges. In a very few min
utes mucn of tne gains melted away and
the closing was very weak again.
Bonus were heavy. The totul sales, par
value, $2,790,000. United States bonds were
all unchanged on call.

morning, but packers
continued their bearish tactics, and as a
result thev were able to break the market
to a still lower level. At the opening the
decline here amounted to fully a nickel,
but buyers did not take hold with any too
much life and did not appear particularly
anxious for supplies. The hogs, though,
kept changing hands and It was not long
pefore the bulk of the offerings was ills

became still mire bearish and their bids
were ftTlOc lower than yesterdny. Sales

largely at 85.124 and 85.16 The commoner

LONDON. April 8. Money was much
wanted in the market today for Stock ex-
ciiange payments, nearly X3,ioo,ouo being
needed for vunous calm beslues tne month-
end requirements, which was partly off
set by the distribution of li.boo.uoo in divi
dends. Discounts were firm. Trading on
the Stock exchango was inactive. The
hesitancv and nervousness due to the polit
lcnl unrest were still apparent, consols
opened heavy, recovered a iraction and re
lapsed in the atterrooji. Homo rails were
depressed. Americans opened Hat on the
break In Wall street and tallied Bmartly
to above parity; The uncertainty regard
ing Wall street and rumors of financial dif
ficulties In New York restrained opera
tions. In the afternoon the receipt of the
New York Quotations caused depression.

NEW YORK, April 2S. M ET A LS Weak
ness In London, where spot tin closed at
135 10s and futures at 134, influenced
the local murket, which cloned easy at
8.10.374 for spot. Copper was lower abroad,
closing at 05, 15s for spot and 66, lis 61

fur as business goes, seems rather unset
tled. Leading producers ure not now ask
ing more than 115.20 for lake and elec
trolytic, while there Is continued talk of
some lake copper being obtainable around
814.874 for May shipment. In a general

CATTLE There was a liberal run of cat
tle here this morning for a Friday and as
packers were well filled up they made use
of the opportunity to pound the market.
As a general thing operators were looking
for a small supply of cattle owing to the
sharp decline of the last few days and tho
fact that receipts were In excess of expec
tations gave buyers a good excuse for
breaking market.
The market on beef steers was extremely
dull and unevenly lower. Some of the
choice handy weight cattle that buyers Just
happened to want were perhaps not over
a dime lower, but the less desirable grades
were hard to sell at any price, as none of
the buyers seemed to want them. It was a
slow, mean market from start to finish and
the day was well advanced before anything
like a clearance was made. As compared
with the close of last week the market Is
all of 3og40c lower and some of the com
moner cattle show even a greater loss than
that. , t .
The cow market was also extremely dull
n4 iinantisfnctorv from the selleis' stand
point. Buyers did not seem to care whether
they got any fresh supplies or not and the
good stuff suffered fully as much as the
common kinds. In many cases salesmen
were unable to get even a bid until the day
was well advanced and offers ranged from
10c to a quarter lower than yesterday. As
compared with a week ago the market Is
from 30840c lower and In some cases tho
i.,a nmnnnts to 60c. It Is the most radical
break that has taken place here in some
time. . ,

SHEEP There were only a few curs of
sheep on sale this morning and they
changed hands without much trouble at
right around yesterday's prices. Clipped
ewes sold as high as 84.65, clipped sheep
und yearlings mixed brought 85.15 and some
clipped Mexican wethers sold for 85.00.
There were so few sheep on sale that most
of them were disposed of nt an early hour.
The bulk of the offerings consisted of
Colorado lambs and the market was very
dull and a little lower. Packers did not
seem to be at all anxious for supplies,
claiming that the demand was In bad shape
and that prices hnve been too high as
compared with other markets. As a result
very little business was transacted until a
late hour. As high as 87.10 was laid for
some pretty good lambs.
