who wan convicted imd sentenced for

What May He Done.
Speaking of tho decision. Judge Baxter
said: "it Is rather sweeping, but still it
uoes not Interfere with the law regarding
tuning liiiuor onto the Indian reservations,
which Is strictly prohibited by the federal
statutes. There are provisions ill the stale
law which prohibit the sale of liquor to
Indians. A meuaure was Introduced In the
last legislature to prohibit the sale of liquor
within ten miles of any Indian reserva
tion, but It was killed In committee. I be
lieve the bill would have passed readily
had tills decision been known earlier. About
the only effective remedy that can be sug
gested now would bo for the state to cede
Jurisdiction of the reservation to the gov
ernment, and then the federal authorities
could control the matter. Just as It con
trols the sale of liquor and looks after the
punishment of crimes on the military res
ervations. As It Is, the state has police
jurisdiction over the Indian reservations
now under the Brewer decision. JuBt what
effect the decision will have on the cases
now In the federal courts from the Indian
reservations will be left to the courj to
determine."
