reported cold, dry weather were anvthlng

Louis sent complaints received from Ne
braska and Missouri quoting crop experts
as saving that a change to warm weather
without plenty of rain would mean damage
for the growing plant. Report as to lack
or moisture, however.' were not confirmed
by the weather bureau. An Impression
that conditions In the southwest were gen
erally favorable to the crop gradually
gained ascendency In the pit. As n result
the market soon lost the Initial firmness.
Beveral prominent tiaders became moder
ate sellers of May and caused a slump to
$1.13 In the price of that delivery. Trnd-
ing was as a whole small In volume
throughout the day. lte In the session
weakness of corn and oats brought out
considerable selling by pit traders. July
fell off to H7Vc. Large primary receipts
tended decidedly to depress the market.
At the close July was easy at 87c. Filial
quotations on May were at ll.Hi. Clear
ances of wheat and flour weie equal to
.TJ.L'Ki bushels. The iimrunt on passage In
creased l.ltfi.onn bushels, while the visible
supply decreased ilifi.OOO bushels. Primary
receipts were 4:i3,LtiO bushels, compared
with 31330O bushels a year ago. Minneap
olis. Duluth and Chicago reported receipt
of 3i!t cars, against cars last week, and
271 cars a year ago.
Liberal liquidation was again a feature
of trading In the corn mnrjiet. As a re
sult of heavy selling by several prominent
holders the market became decidedly weak.
The weakness was all the more remarkable
In view of the numerous reports from Ne
braska telling of an excellent demand from
feeders. The market closed at ahaut the
lowest point of the day. July opened un
changed to ; higher at 4)MV4Sc, sold off
to 47Va474.- and closed at 47,c. Local re
ceipts were 171: cars, with 13 of contract
grade.
Weakness of corn caused considerable
selling of oats by pit traders. Prospects
of warmer weather also tended to weaken
values. Sentiment was bearish the entire
dav. Julv onened unchanged at Wc, sold
off to 2iHe and closed at iltHc. local re
ceipts were 7 cars.
A decline of lot- In the price of hogs fol
lowing enormous receipts created extreme
weakness' In provisions. The decline In
coarse grains was an additional bettrlsn
factor during the last half of the session.
Selling was general throughout the day.
Shorts were the chief buyerB. At the close
July pork wns off 16c nt I12.85. lard was
down Be at $7.40, ribs were 2V4c lower at
I7.2Mi7.27.

siderable uiiseitlenient manifested In the
slock market today, which was partly due
to Hie carrying over of a bud impression
Irnni Satiinlav on account of fhe rather
urgent pressure to take profits on the
week s rise. This Impression was partly
dissipated by the buoyant opening IMS
morning, but the high prices made then
Invited renewed celling and seivcl to dis
courage the confidence of operators lot
higher prices. The market for the rest
m 1 he nay was spotty and Irregular.
The selling 011 the opining rise was of
such voluniu Slid character as whs not to
be Ignored. It wns generally supposed to
be due In part to the necessity of pro
tective measures In connection with the
wheat speculation. Various publications
pointing to the hazardous position of those
commuted to the wheat deul mado opin
ions sensitive 011 this point. In the wheat
market Itself the weather news helped to
sustain 1,, li es and to that extent relieved
apprehension over the Immediate situa
tion of I he yield. Hut, on the other hand,
the possibility of damage to the crop by
the unseasonable weather Is a disadvant
age to values of stocks and had its part
in cooling the demund. The wintry
weather carried Its threat of dnimge to
crops as well and wan one of the appre
ciable factors In today's stink market.
Another was the assembling Of the senale
committee to Investigate the problem of
railroad rate legislation. This topic has
fallen into the background during the
recent enthusiasm in the stock speculation.
The reports of the committee's inten'lon
served to bring It Into consideration again
with Its ultimate possibilities when con
gress assembles. Railroad officials con
tinue to talk ill verv confident terms re
garding traffic, but their usual weekly
Interviews were of a more restrained tone
than for some time past. There Is suf
ficient business reported to keep equip
ment engaged, but the overabundance
which caused car shortages early In the
season lias passed away.
While those minor considerations played
their prt the maiket continued to give
the principal attention to the question of
the Northern Securities distribution and
the readjustments growing out of It.
While the mandate of the supreme court
Issued, as was expected, there was still
the absolute lack of official announcement
or confirmation for any of the many stories
of deals supposed to he wailing on this
event. The situation proved a strain to
speculative contltlence, especially in view
of the highly concentrated character of
much of the selling of 1'nlon Pacific and
Hie fears aroused as to what It might
imply. This stock and Northern Sectirit.es
on the curb reacted with some violence
after the opening and carried depression
Into other slocks, which have moved in
sympathy with them. The exceptional
I streiiglh shown by St. Paul did not serve
Hiioije.iner to oirsei mis lnnuence. rveitncr
did Hie sustained advance in Atlantic
Coast Line, which was only of moderate ef
fect even on Its own group. The renewed
strength in the I'tiiteit States Sleei stocks
was of more Influence and seemed to be
due to satisfaction with the proceedings
at the annual meeting of the corporation.
The preferred rose easily to a new rec
ord level. There was some especial de
mand for money on the Ixindon money
market today, due to huge financial trans
actions, which are expected to be of tem
porary effect. More Importance was at
tached to the renewal of the demand from
Paris upon Ivonilon for gold, which, re
sulted in a sharp decline in the sterling
rate at Paris. Aloney here was distinctly
easier but sterling exchange was steady.
The closing tone of the maiket was heavy
and uncertain, as it had been for most
of the day. ,
Bonds were Irregular. Total wiles, par
value, I2.W1.1XK). I'ni'ed Stutes 3s and
2s. registered, declined '4o itnd the 2s,
coupon, 'vc on call.

There were not a great many cows and
heifers in sight today and as a result the
market on deslra'. le grades sold nt about
steady prices as compared with last Friday.
When It cumii to dinners and common cut
ters, however, the demand wus apparently
of limited proportions and the market on
such kinds was slow nud around a dime
lower. The commoner the qualify the
harder It was to make a satisfactory sale.
The good stuff was all disposed of at a
reasonably early hour, but common stuff
changed hands slowly.
Good bulls sold about steady, but common
kinds were dull nnd weak. Veal calves sold
in Just rtbotit the some notches they did
last week.
A good many stoekers and feeders were
carried over from last week in the hands
of speculators and tis a result they were
feeling very bearish this morning and did
not want fresh supplies unless they could
buy them for less money. The best grades,
of course, did not suffer to any great ex-
1 tent, but the common and medium grades
I were slow nnd fully 11 dime lower. Common
light catile were bard to sell at any figure.
