Judge Munger has handed down a memo
randa opinion In the United States district
court in the case of the Chinese. Liu Hop
nd Iyw Quam, In which Liu Hop l or
dered deported to China and Lew Quam Is
ordered discharged.
Both cases were appeals from the find
ings of "United State Commissioner Ander
son, rendered last winter, In which both
Chinese were decreed as being In the
United States In violation of the acts of
congress and their deportation ordered. In
the Liu Hop cane the opinion of Judga
Munger uses theKe words:
It appears that I.lu Hop Is a Chinaman;
that lie landed In the United States at San
Krnnrlaco July 2, 1K!9. or shortly there
after, and (luring the year 199 he came to
Omaha, where Tie has since readied and
eriKiiRed as a common laborer. His entry

Police Sergeant Michael Whelan waj al
most under obligations to arrest himself
for petty larceny this morning. Mr.
Whelan lives at the Murray hotel, and as
he passed out of tha dialog room la
mlnded manner, took a hat which did not
belong to him and left hla own. When he
reached tha police station he was greeted
by the pleasant tonea of Dan Haldwln.
"For heaven's sake, Mike, run back to
the Murray hotel and see If you can catch
a thief. A millionaire from New York
laid his lid down and some one haa atolen
it. He Is In a terrible stew."
Mr. Whelan bethought himself that his
own hat might have been Mtolen, put his
hand tu hla head, and to his amazement
took off a brand new hat which did nut
resemble his own. With a sheepish look
he fled from the etutlon bark to t!.e hotel.
