In the uncertain mood of the si. eu.ation
after hH'lna ifassif-fl out of consideration
for a time. T he inquisitorial tendency of
legislation and public policy towards cor

threat to values of securities.
The embittered contioversy which Lo a
sprung up in the administration of the
Equitable Life Assurance society and th
Invr stlgatlon th i prompted had the effect
of emphasizing this impression. The very
prominence of the low grade Industrial
stocks, even where they give evlficnce of
Slrenxth. Is regarded as an evidence that
the high grade st' f ks have exhausted their
resources for advaroe aid begets suKphlon
of the stability of the whole market Some
of the day'? abortive movement In the bet

manipulative and designed to offset this
character of the market. The alsence of
lot-.g expected announcements which have
been supposed simply to await the con
clusion of the Northern Securities case.
Induces a feeling of suspense and of dis
trust over the extent to which mysteri

ments in various stocks. There Is a feel
ing that some of these mysierlea must
either be dissolved soon or replaced by ef
fective new factors If prices are to be sus
tained at their present high level.
The tone of the money market shows
seme relaxation In consequence of tiie
completion of the April .settlement, btit not
to the extent that sanguine speculators
hoped, and the possibility is now faced of
a considerable prolongation of the period
of higher tales for Interest. It is evident
that many important capital Issues have
been pl.inned to take advantage of the
normal accumulation of reserve a at this
time of the year, both here and abroad,
and this class of requirements will, of
course, take precedence uf stock market
borrowing. The most substantial sustain
ing influence In today's market was the
heavy mium tlatlou of the I nlte.l States
Stiel stocks. Reported large buying of pig
iron by the corporation is a repi tltion of
previous conditions, but the lark of re
sponse in the securities of the company
has been the cause of din.atisfactlin In
the market. The rise in the southern rail
road group whs attributed to the enlarged
cotton movement and to the advantages to
accrue from a rising scale cf freights on
Iron, due to a sliding adjustment In har

beef steer could sately tie- quoted a
dime higher. Some of the cattle that were
lacking in quality and flesh were, of course,
not that much higher, but anything that
was at 'l deslraole sold readily and an
early clearance was made. A high as
lo.Su was paid this morning for some horned
western branded cattle, nut they were of
good quality and flesh. That is the high
est price of the season at this point.
There was also an active demand for cow
stuff, and the general market could he
quoted strong to a dime higher. The more
desirable grades were, as
higher, widle the common and medium
grades were not a great deal higher. Buy
ers, though, all needed fresh supplies, and
as there wire not enough 01 t life good cat

they could get. Trading was active frcm
start to finish and It took hut a compara

change hand.
The market on bulls, veal calves and
(tags could also be quoted strong and
active in sympathy with the advance in

Speculators succeeded in selling more
ato.kers and feeders yesterday than they
expected and as a result the demand this
morning for that class of cattle was In
better shape than it was yestt rday and
prices rulesj strong to a dime higher. A
new top waa put cm the market today when
some heavy feeders soli for H.95. hut. of
course, they were good. There waa no
noticeable improvement In the prices paid
for the common and light stuff, but at ill
such kinds could lie ouoied steady to

The re. ent act of the legislature about
which some misunderstanding exists does
away with the right of an attorney t

that a commission Is due for collecting It,
and deprives him of this defence and does
away with the necessity for a civil suit.
"This is a re-enactment of the old law
with an addition." said Attorney B. F.
