The decline wai. finally checked by liberal
support from strong bull traders, who
bought persistently around what proved to
be the low point of the day. Other big
houses also came to the support of the
market. Shorta took advantage of the
break and covered freely. The purchase
affected a partial restoration of confidence

Clearances of wheat and flour were equal

Duluth snd Chlcsgo reported recelpta of

In nharp contrast to tb break In wheat,
corn closed decidedly strong. Relief waa
x pressed that the eastern speculators, who
had Just disposed of their Immense line of
May wheat, had transferred their atten
tions to the corn market. During the early
part of the neesion the market was quite
firm, principally on buying by shorts, who
were Influenced bv the Arm tone of cables
and by the reported loaa of 800,000 buahela
of corp In ihe New Orleans fire. The break
In wheat waa the occasion of considerable
aelllng of corn. Aa a result the market
weakened considerably. Iater In the day
sn active demand developed and a quick
mlly ensued. The close was almost at Ihe
highest point of the day. May opened a

470 and 48Vt4ac and cloaed at 4Hc. Lo
cal receipts were 672 cars with 2 of con

L,ate strength of corn had a buoyant ef
fect on price of oata. At the outset the
market was steady. The slump of wheat
started aome silling. of osts. resulting In a
decline of shout Vc. An Improved demand
developed late In the session In sympathy
with corn. The market closed firm. May
opened a shade lower to a shade higher at
31tr31ne. sold between 30'31He and closed
at SmfcHlSc. Local receipts were 288 cara.
Provisions were firm nt the start, on fair
demand from packers. The break In wheat
started aelllng by frightened longa, caus

strength of corn. At the clone May pork

Active nnd Eaay.
NEW YORK. Feb. 27. The bulky total of
over X.000.0UI ahnres reached by the business
done at the Stock exchange today wit
nessed the continuation of tne ntx-culnttve
excitement and the widespread interest In
the market. The day, however, was dis
tinctly devoted to a process ot digestion
and mere were no such violent advances aa
were made last week. Very substantial
progress was made, however. In reallalng
the proflta caused by last week s advances.
During the prevalanee of an active spec
ulation and a long continued rise In prices
Mondays are always chosen to effect a dis
tribution of holdings and to convert paper
proflis Into cash. The Sunday Interval
naturally leads to an accumulation of or
ders from outside sources in brokers' of
fice. The execution of these offers good
ojiportunify for selling to advantage. Much
a movement waa clearly In progress today,
and while a check reaulted to the rise In
price the absorptive power of the market
was what was chiefly remarked. The re
sistance offered to the selling was not
helped by any notable new development,
with the exception of the striking move
ment in Southern Pacific. The advance In
thia slock was explained in some quarters
as an adjustment to the recent advance In
I'nlnn Pacific. In which the subsidiary stock
nan not shared, hut an additional motive
for thn buying was offered In the circulation
of the rumor that a dividend payment on
the stock had been practically determined
upon. This rumor lacked official confirma
tion, ns did laat week s many rumors of
combination projecta. but It was as little
Impaired In Its Influence on that account as
were the previous stories. The rate of ab
sorption in Southern Pacific In the first
stages of today's movement was unprece
dented on the Stock exchange, not less than
Whom shares changing hands In a period of
ten minutes during the period of greatest
activity.
The great animation of the present mar
ket makes a striking contrast with the cor
responding season of last year, when the
volume of dealings was dropping off from
day to day until on Marrh 10 sales of lens
than 75.000 mere recorded, a low record for
many years. Routine ncwa of the day waa
little regarded, although It offered nothing
to discourage the buying of atocks. The
effect of the Are loss at New Orleans waa
restricted to Illinois Central, the principal
sufferer. Railroad traffic officials reported
progress making In the opening up of their
llnea all orer the country after the storm
blockades and the milder weather haa also
resulted In largely increased offerings of
grain from the primary points.
The Very heavy outlay for equipment and
Improvements announced by the Baltimore
& Ohio and the lng Island are regarded
as gratlfvlng evidence of present prosperity
and confidence In the future, but Locomo
tive was the only railroad equipment stock
to respond notably and Its strength was
temporary. The money market gave aome
evidence of Increasing demand for credits,
but no annrehension was felt of a lack of
supply. Foreign money centers reported a
confident feeling In the future ease of
money, and It Is felt that supplies will be
available from those sources of the New
York market In case of any urgent demand.
The persistence of the selling of stocks and
the small response to the striking move
ment In Southern Pacific, which rose to
72,ic, prompted a general unloading of
stocks late In the day. which carried prices
to the lowest level and made the cloalng
considerably unsettled.
Bonds were Irregular. Total sales, par
value, 85.87o.0iTO. l ulled States 2s, regis
tered, advanced per cent on call.

t-A'i-ci w iint-oiio nf cattle were not cx
cesslve this morning, and with a good local
demand the market ruled active, with but
little change in ruling prices from those In

were all out In good season and it was not
long before the bulk of the offerings was
disposed 01. , . . .
A good manv beef steers were Included In
the offerings, but the demand seemed to be
equal to tne occasion and aa k result the
market on desirable grades was fairly
active and Just about steady with the close
of the week. In faci, some salesmen
thought that some of ihe kinds that Just
suited buyers were a litllH stronger, but. 011
the otrer hand, some of the commoner
kinds wei a trifle weak., so that on the
average the market could not be quoted
anvthing but steady. Moat everything waa
disposed of in good season.
Cow biivorn 100k hold quite freely this
morning and as a result trading was active
with prlcea practically the aaine as they
were laat Friday. All the buyers seemed to
be anxious for fresh supplies and Iwiiight
the common to medium grades aa well as
the good slufT at steady prices without
hesitation. An early clearance was made.
Bulls, veal calves and slags were also
without quotable change, the demand being
fullv equal to the supply.
There were not many stin kers and feed
ers In sight and as speculators carried over
very few from last week they were all
anxious for fresh supplies and the market
on Isith light and heavy cattle that had
anv qnalltv to them was active and strong,
some sales ill fact being quite a Utile
higher. As high as 84. :W was paid for a
big string of cattle of good quality. Rep

MOOS There was a liberal run of hogs
reported In Chicago, about 42 ono being on
sale. At this point receipts were lui fair
for a Mondav and with a good local de
mand the market ruled fairly active and
strong to 6c higher, although Chicago was
quoted slow and generally steady, with
Kansas City steady to 10c lower. Buyers
all bought quite freely, so that an early
clearance was made The light weights
sold lars-olv from 4.724j down, butchers and
mixed from 14 72' to 14 80 and heavies from
14 an to 14 9o.
There wns nn particular change In the
market from start to finish, the late snles
being lust ns good as the early ones. Most
of the trains arrived In ftilrly good season,
so that the market was not delayed as
much from that source as usual. Repre

have been a trlde higher. A new top for
the season waa put on both the wether and
yearling market this morning when Mexi
can wethers sold for 16 and Mexican year
