There was a lively demand last week
for seasonable goods throughout the ter
ritory tributary to Omaha. Country roads
are, of ooutne, in rather bad condition and
probably will be lor some time, but In
spite of that fact merchants have been
doing a nice business, and they expect a
good brisk trade from now on. With
Omaha Jobbers business wan also rushing
and. In fact, some of the wholesalers stated
that they never had a better house trade
than they experienced last week. This is
accounted for by the fact that the cold
weather has been keeping buyers at home
and as a result there was a iMg rush last
week. They bought freely. In anticipation
of an enormous spring demand, and dis
played considerable anxiety to have the
goods shipped at once. There Is no mis
taking the fact that the general opinion la
that conditions In this section of the coun
try are the most promising they have ever
Iteen, so that much confidence Is fell in
future business.
Traveling men for local Jobbers also did
an enormous business on the road. Mer
chants now realise that the time Is at
hand when they must have their spring
and summer lines on sale and consequently
they are very willing to place their orders.
Salesmen carrying fall gooda also did a
nice business, so that trude In all depart
ments may be said to be In very satisfac
tory condition.
1 ne markets on practically all lines are
also In a good healthy condition, which is
another reason why merchants are willing
to buy freely. Everything at the present
time seems to point to strong prlcea for
some time to come, as both the home and
foreign demand is of such proportions that
there seems to be no reason for making
any reductions. On the contrary, there are
many reasons why prices should rule
higher.
Sagar May Advance.
Wholesale grocers report the demand for
their line of goods as being heavier last
week than for some time past. With season
able weather from now on they confidently
expect a lively trade. The market on most
lines is strong and In some cases consider
ably higher prices are being predicted.
This is the case wtth sugar, which is now
In a very strong statistical position. Raws
are quoted 3-16 of a cent higher titan they
were a woek ago and while no change has
as yet taken placo ln this market on re
fined, it Is thought that an advance will
take place ln the very near future. local
Jobbers say that refiners would be Justified
In advancing prices, baaed on the present
cost of raws. Some of the larger New
York operators are of the opinion that the
market wilt advance '4 cent and possibly
Vi cent In the next sixty days.
The colfee market continued irregular last
week, there being a decline In options the
early part Of the week amounting to about
80 points. On Friday, however, the mar
ket closed with an advance of about 10
points. The cause of the decline was a
cable from Rio to the effect that the Santos
crop would run from 260.000 to B'io.oco bags
more than previous estimates. While this
was only a rumor, It nevertheless had
Its effect upon the market. It is claimed,
however, that the largest New York hold
ers were very libertl buyers at the de
cline, showing their confidence in the future
of the market.
Fancy Otcober made cheese has advanced
hihka and stocks in first hands are rap
idly decreasing, as the demand is much
greater than usual at this season of the
year. Still hiaher prices are being pre
dicted, as It is claimed that there is not
enough stock to last until the new grass
cheese arrives on the market in May.
Winter made goods can be bought for less
money, but it is claimed that there Is lit
tle demand In thin market for that grade.
The market on rolled oats Is considerably
stronger than it waa a week ago. The ad
vance amounts to 2030c per barrel on
bulk gooda and to lOfrlftc per case on five-

The dried fruit market la very strong, ami

son with anything like a normal demand.
Prunes are a little easier In tone, although
stocks are light

ward and some advances have taken place
on the medium and lower grades of Japan.
The export demand has been quite good
and It Is claimed that that has had con
siderable to do with the strength of tha
market. Many of the liest posted operators
In the south are said to be buying up
everything that looks cheap to them,

Big Demand for Dry Gooda.
There was a rush of dry goods buyer
on the market last week, too equal of
which haa seldom If ever been aeen at
this point. As was stated a week ago tha
cold weather has been keeping buyers at
home for some time past and as tha
wther was quite moderate last week;
those who have been trying to come to
market for the laat several weeka ail cam
In a bunch last week. Jobrera, thougli,
were expecting a rush and as a result
they were prepared to look after tha
wants of their customers. Not only was
there a large nurriber of merchants In the
city, but- they were all liberal buyers,
showing their confidence in future busi
ness. Almost without exception tlicv ex
pressed themselves as being well satisfied
with the outcome of their winter's trade.
There was, of course, not enough cold
weather early in the season, but mat was
made up for at least In a large measure
by the exceptionally cold wewther of tha
lust several weeks, so that no more than
the usual amount of heavy goods will bo
carried over.
In regard to spring business merchants
see no reason why they should not hnve
the best trade thev have ever experienced.
Farmers are well fixed with plenty of ready
money and with good prospects for the
future there seems to be nothing to prevent
their spending their money more freely
thnn usual.
The dry goods market Is ln a good,
healthy condition. In speaking of the cot
ton goods market a local jobber said Hint
It looked to'htm as though the bottom of
the market had been reached. There Is no
surplus stock In the hands of manufactur
ers and In fact many staple lines are hnrd
to oblaln. The demand both at home and
from abroad Is very liberal and conse
quently there seems to be no reason for
making reductions ln prices. In woolen
goods the high price at which the 1(5
clip of wool has been contracted would
scm to prevent anv weakness In that line
for some time to come. At present the
market la In a very strong position. Tak
ing everything Into consideration, there
appears to be no cause for fearing any
price reductions In either cotton or woolen
goods for many months to come.
Hardware Active and Steady.
The demand for hardware last week was
also much heavier than for several weeks
past. All lines of i-easonable goods, such
as wire cloth, screen doors, poultry netting,
steel goods, refrigerators and all such lines,
nave been moving out very freely and Job
bers in many cases have, had to work their
men overtime in order o meet the require
ments of their customers. There Is also
a very heavy demand for builders' hard
ware, an there Is to be an unusual amount
of building this spring in practically all
sections tributary to this market.
There have been no price changes In
hardware worthy of mention since last
report. The market, though, may be said
to be ln a good strong position, the Sam
as it has been for some time past, and tha
tendency of prices is upward, rather than
otherwise.
Robber Goods Sell Well.
The mud and slush caused by the melting .
Snow has created an enormous demand for ;
rubber footwear, both boots and Bandals.'
Ae a result merchants have made a big
hole In their stocks and Jobbers are al
ready receiving a large number of filling
In ordera. The way It looks now. the de
mand will be very heavy for some time,
as there Is bound to be a good deal of mud
this spring.
Orders for next fall goods are also com
ing In freely, as the advance previously"
announced has stirred merchants up, and
traveling salesmen have little trouble In
getting an order whenever they can find
a merchant who has not already bought.
There has also been a much better de
mand for leather goods than for many
weeks pat. According to advices from tha
country, retailers have been doing a rush
ing business, and those who have not com-
fileted their spring purchases are now do
ng so. The result Is that Jobbers have
been receiving a large number of very nlca
orders and it is now safe to say that the
amount of goods sold this spring will be
considerably heavier than a year ago.
