' ' NEW YORK STOCKS AND Market is Excited and Active and Price MoTements Are Feverish. CLOSING IS UNSETTLED AND IRREGULAR Formation of a syndicate to Merge Southern Iron Properties Sends Those Shares Is Many Points. NEW YORK, Feb. 23. There were vio lent speculstlve activity and excitement In stocks sgain today and fome very feverish price movements. The surmises to explain the movements were so perplexed as to un settle the msrket from time to time, but Its resisting power was Impressive and the price level was not much Impaired even where the Influences were on the side of doubt and depression. This was the esse In the railroad list at !nrget where profit taking on an enormous scale snd uneasi ness aroused by the sensational movement the soeclalties induced the selling to out weigh the buying. The southern iron group was again tne sensstlonal feature and It was during the most violent ebullitions In those stocks that the genersl list was most Inclined to sell off. Another advance In Union Pacific was the most effective sustaining Influence, but that stock also was unravoraniy arrecteu at times by the rocket-llkn flights of the Iron stocks. Union 1'aciflo recovered all of Ita 2 per cent dividend, which came off today, and allowing for that made a new high record. St. Paul was most Immedl stely In sympathy with It, although the soiithwesterns were helped to some extent. The buoyancy of tho snuthern stocks caused an advance In the southern railroad group, but was of no assistance otherwise to orlces. Rumors and assertions as to the stage reached In the attempt to effect a merger of the southern Iron stocks were various snd many of them conflicting. Tha convulsive movements In those stocks. reaching many points between transactions, were of a kind which are usually mane only tinder dlatress and extreme necessity, such ss are caused by a corner with an un covered short Interest. The extreme ad vances over Tuesdsy's prices shown by these stocks during the day will tell tno storv. In Bloss-Sheftleld Hteei tnis was Plos's-Sheffleld preferred 18. Tennessee Coal 11V Republic Steel 3H and Republic Steel preferred 7. An additional factor in the In fluence which these movements had upon sentiment was the jump of 10H In Interna tional Power, a stock which Is held In memory on account of a sensational episode on ihe Htnck exchange a numoer 01 yeam ago snd which Is affiliated to the present movement In the southern Iron stocks by the Identity of some of the active factors In the movement. The existence of a syn dicate or organlxatlon designed to merge ha iron nronertles was the undisputed fsct developed out of today's events. As to the achievement of control of the properties af fected or as to the terms offered for se curing that object, the reports current were hopelessly confused. Tho news of the day otherwise was not of grest Influence. The failure to reduce tne omciai oiscoom. rate of the Bank of England and a harden ing in the private rate for discounts In Ixmdon were disappointments. So was the continuance of the war of rates on export grain. Engagements of gold ror ooutn America, although sman. are ish-ii .uu. tlonal importance since the currency move ment l shifting In favor of the Interior. Call money went to 3 per cent late in the day. The rise In call money and the violent reactions In the iron stocks carried prices, off sharply during the final hour to an average level Considerably below i-.. hut tho Hnnl rallv on covering of. shorts substantially repaired the price level The closing, however, was unwium irregular. Buyera were out In good season and It was not long before all the early arrivals changed hands. About the usual proportion of the offer ings consisted of cornfed steers and the market could be quoted as steady to strong, with trading fairly active. Anything, though, at all desirable sold at good, strong prices, with the commoner kinds steady. The quality of the offerings as a whole was only fair, the same as has been the -rase for some time past. The cow market if anything showed more Improvement than did steers. Buyers all seemed to be anxious for supplies and as ti result they were liberal buyers, and It took but a comparatively short time for every thing In sight to change hands. The mar ket could safely be quoted strong to a dime higher, the more desirable grades showing the greatest Improvement. The common grades, though, changed hands without difficulty at a little better prices than were paid yesterday. The market on bulla, veal calves and stags could be quoted steady to strong. Choice veals are now selling as high aa $6, which Is the highest prices paid in some time past. Quite a little Improvement hns been noticed the last few days In the demand for lightweight stock cattle of good quality. Speculators have had a good many of that class on hand, for which the demand has been very limited, but the last day or two country buyers have been picking them up quite freely. The few cattle that arrived today sold at fully steady prices, whether they were light or heavy, and some of the more desirable grades may have been a lit tle stronger. NEW YORK, Feb, 23 COFFKK-Market opened unchanged to 10 points higher In response to firmer European markets and rather smaller primary receipts. There was very active liquidation, however, owing probably to fear of notices tomorrow, which will be the first day for March ten ders, and the market after the.onenlng ruled active and very weak, with offerings more or less general and probably for both long and short account. The buyers on 1h decline seemed to be substantial interests who took the near months thrown over by the frightened longs and sold the latter po sitions, but the close was at practically the lowest point, ar a net decline of 15SM5 polnta.
