NEW TORK, Feb. l.-The heavy engage ments of gold for export fo Psrls tomorrow were made the nominal occasion for selling of storks tndiy. but taking of profits on yesterday's feverish and volatile advances w-as an ob lous motive in many parts of the t. The weakness of these stocks was 0fTst by strong advances at other r'ln's. according to the usual method of support ing the market to facilitate the taking of profits by profissinnnl operators. Hut the not very striking advance In such stocks as Rea llr.K an.1 Missouri Kacinc among the Usui! tax. iritis, even supplemented as it was by the rlhe In n lengthy list of spe cialties, proved a 1 r substitute as a stiin- uiat.t In favor of yesterday's movement in the Vandert.iits. The mass offered to the market for digot(on jiroved und'T these ctrcumsta n' es somewhat bc.ivler thin c uld be comfortably absorbed and the prevailing tone was heavy. I .a r ire exports of gold were expected this week and the prosper t has occasioned little concern owing to the actual embarrassment found In securing employmi rt for the ac cumulhtlng bat.k reserves at this center, in spite of a considerable activity In the Issues :f new securities and Investment In exist ing liond issues Hut nn mitri for a single day of upwards of f :i,moiiri in the precious metal and the sIIbIu Impression caused by the enormous supply of exchange on that market are Impressive facts. The Insa tiable demand of the Paris mat kef for gold is the more notable in view of the rapid recuperation of London's supply, that capi tal iuivlr.tr received $5.0.' 0 from Egypt and the largest slna!" conslenment ever leeelved from Capetown within the last week. Yc the pr.nclpul demand from Paris continues to he diverted upon New Yors. It Is evident that the only chaiiKe In con ditions that Is likely to put-a stop to the movement will be an ndvane In Interest rotes which will offer a sufficient induce ment to keep the gold at home, rather than send it abroad to secure the additional ad vantage offer-d there The entire lack of any effect on local ir.otn y rates thus far. except for a slight hardening In call loan rate late today, lesds to estimates that seem fxtravagunt of the extent tu which the movement may go. yulte as tnfl'ientlal a factor In the stock market wis the action of the Yanderbilt shines and of the more sober consideration ptveu of the recent rumors) regarding a wholesale conso.hi.ition of that group with the great Harriman properties. Yesterday's actl in toward the concentration of operat ing control in the Vanderbtlt group and the known extension of Rockefeller holdings In New York Central, while of admitted im portance in the standing of theao securities, was not felt to be sufficient to explain the violent movements in the group. The rise of .'5 points effected yesterday In Chicago, St. Paul. The extreme cold ( ' last night together with the drifting snow mude the trains very late In arriving, so that the morning was well advanced befcre the market opened and the dose was delayed until a late hour. The demand for the more deslrab'e grade of beef steers' was in good shape and the mnrket on such kinds could safely be quoted steady. The common to medium kinds also sold for about as much money ns thev did yesterday, but of course trading was not as active on those kinds as on some of the grades that just suited buyers. All things considered It was a fairly satis factory market. The cow market was not particularly ac tive, but still in the majnrltv of cases Just about steady prices were paid. Some of the buyers were inclined to be a little bearish, partlcularlv on the common to medium grades, but still ns a general thing there was not enough chanre from yesterday In ruMntr prices to be worthy of ment'on. Bulls, veal calves and stags also com manded .lust abo'it steadv prices, there he lm" no quotable chnnpe In either direction. There were only a few stoclrers and feed ers In the yard" so that although the de mand was rot shut would be cil'ed heavv the few catt'e that arrived sVd without a great desl of fouhle st lust about yeter dHvn ri'lces. Trains were very slow in arriving, which made packers rather slow to take hold, but still the bulk of the early arrivals was dis posed of In fairly good season. The lighter weights sold largely from $4.70 4 ,5 Packers did not appear to be as anxious for supplies today as they have been of late, owing, probably, In a meas ure to the fact that the market has been steadily advancing and present prices look rather high to them. In this connection It Is noticed that today Is the high point of the season to date and also the highest point reached since last November. The latter end of the market was very slow and weak and. in fact, the big end of the early advance waa lost, ao that the late arrivals aold In much the same notches as yesterday s offerings. One of the prin cipal bear features was the fact thai the provision market lost the early advance. Quite a few hogs were In nrat ha nils at nooi., so that it was late before a clearance as made.
