OMAHA, Jan. 25. I!.
The speculative whrH I market ai better
today than Tuesday and the cssh market
reflected It strength In a better demand
and slightly Hflvnm H price The May hid
a strong undertone but any advance above
1 l't checked by selling The opening
.a "tronr. but little van offered around
'he quarter Valentine then Jumped In
with offers of I'ai.uori.hiishcl lot and i becked
an- advar"-:. Valentine was tie heaviest
seller of the May Tuesday, offering such
large amounts that- he era red the crowd
into pelting In Ht. Louis It vm claimed
also he sold there. A broker 111 Chicago
nought fro.uoo bushel Tucsdav and the
crowd Is divider! In opinion an to whether
!t was for Armour or Cudahy. The cash
market m sllgntlv better everywhere.
Chicago aold 2U.00 buahela and there a
greater d'umnd outelde. Minneapolis re
ported a good demand with an advance In
price, No. 1 norThcrn aelllng at V under
the May and No. 2 northern at fee under.
In the foreign markets Liverpool losed
with an advance of from Sti'v. which
was partly due to the newa thst the Aui
tralian surplus for expoit would not be at
large a at firet thought. Berlin and Ant
werp closed unchanged. Buda-Pest slack
ened off 'dr. and Tails was weaker to the
extent of 10 point.
Nlcolet of Kanaaa City la credited with
saying the wheat movement In Kalian I
about over for the present lie say one
half of the current receipts are from Ne
hinaka and that source of supply Is drying
up. Minneapolis reports the movement,
there slackening up and the grain moved
out to be at the expense of the country
house stock. The receipts today are much
smaller than a week ago. being 2S7 cars,
ngklnst 4'.'. cars; hut they arc silll In ad
vance of those for Inst yenr. which were
IM cars. Duluth. on the other hand, drops
today to 2 r'ars from .14 cars last week and
m uri last year. The primary receipts sra
621.0nu bushels, against frtt.ono bushels for
the preced ng week, mid 67,0M bushels lart
ytir. The shipments sre Srfl.OOO bushels,
egalnsl MX noo bushel last week and 280,000
bushels last year.
The corn niarkat'Vns so dull this morn
ing the corn speculators Invaded the wheat
pi's nnd Indulged In scalping operations.
Th shipping trade Was also limited In ex
tent and demand and the cash market was
down about j cent. ' In Liverpool the buy
ers were Inclined to be bearish nnd to hold
off for an expected decrease In prices. The
cold weather Interferes with tha country
movement ana the receipts are showing the
effect, Nebraska corn . Is still going south
on former purchases by the gulf, but little
new business la being done. The primary
reccl were 700.000 bushels, against - 634.1 00
bushels Inst ysnr. Tke shipments were
26.(.K bushels, agniupt ,424,000 bushels lust
year. .
Ther'a seems to he little oat demand for
export. One house In Hoston has held
16O.000 bushels of thlrtv-flve-pound white
clipped oats there since last fall without
making satisfactory exporting terms.

f'HIi'AOo, Jan. 25 1-erge purchases al-l"ge-t
to be tor . the purpose of covering
short sales by a prominent speculstor
caused a net advance of S(4Q in the price
of May wheal today. Corn 1 up V oats
gained 4u4c and provisions are ort 24c
to sc.
Throughout the day the situation in Rus
sia was a source of uneasiness in the wheat
pit. At the opening of trading evidence of
a lessened movement of grsin to market
in the inrthwest helped send the price of
May wheat up 44c t 4'fc. the Initial
quotation Ising l.ltVql lh- 'the firmness
that pervaded the niaraet had a more sub
stantial lsls In buying by commission
houfes. The purchases were generally un
derstood to apply against esles made by a
leading short Intorrst. In sll It is said
that over l.ouTV bu. nf May wheat were
covered for this account. Except for a
momentary wavering at the start, when
offerings of long lines at the advance
caused the May option to ease off to 11.164,
doideaiv more than merely adeuuate sup
port was afforded the market by shuns
who hastened to follow the example of the
Ifirger Interests. May advanced 10 l.if4''
l.lfru and closed firm at $1,164. Clearances
of wheat and flour were equal to 72.0iiO bu.
Primary receipts were 6.KI.W1O against 5'7,'0
hu. a year ago. Minneapolis, Duluth and
Chicago reported receipts of 317 cars
against 4M care Isst week and 22 cars a
year rzo.
Corn was firm, but trade was dull. Re
ceipts were small and general advices from
the country gave little Indication of Im
provement in the movement. May sturted
a shade higher nt 444c, advanced to 454c
and closed firm at 464404''. !ocal re
ceipts were 2 cars.
Oats were steadv, though dull. May
started unchanged st 8fc, closing near the
best figure for the day at tOVs.'llc, Local
receipts were 7t cars.
A strong market for hogs gave provisions
a firm start with prices up 24 to 6n. Iater
longs showed a disposition to aell and a
reaction followed. Packers and commission
houses took the offerings and checked the
decline. The close showed a loss In May
pork of 241WRC at 111.32413.15. Iird and
ribs were down 24o at 17.0.4 and IK.90. Es
timated receipts for tomorrow: Wheat. H

NEW YORK, Jan. U'..-The weakness of
stocks, wnlch became more pronounced to
day, was doubtless attributed to tne tin
certain outlook in Russia, nut tho effect
was not produced olrectiy through tho
usual cnaimeis. In lact. London iw.cgni
here during the early part of tn- day al
most as freely as it soul on Mommy. Tha
lone of the foreign markets generally also
reflected a relaxation or tne acute anxieiy
over the aituatton In Russia. A tendency
has been noticeable on the part of pro
lesslonal traders to put nut a line of snort
contracts lute In the dnv on the supposi
tion that unexpected events over 1 ight
would be Itkelv to favor the bear side.
With the opening of the following day s
market snd with affairs In St. Petersburg
apparently better than worse, the market
has been strong In the rsrly dealings. The
lull in tho activity of the Interior frelgnt
movement makes an Impression on senti
ment and this was reinforced today by
the nhirn falllna off of cross earnings for
the third week In January reported by the
Missouri Pacific. The decline tn net tam
ing for the Wabash for December was
effective in tha same direction. The very
heavy demands reached by the gold export
movement today was a chilling Influence
on speculative sentiment, the mote M a
the movement has no defined limit In sight.
It Is evident that Paris regards Its large
holdings nf Russian securities as requiring
the fortifying of Its gold reserve to an
important extent, The dispute amongst the
railroads over export grain rates as be
tween the Atlantic and the gulf ports came
In for some consideration and favorable
action by a congressional commltteeupon

CATTLE There was a fairly liberal run
of cattle here this morning, but the trams
were very slow In arriving, and It was well
along toward noon before much business
was transacted. There was no great
amount ot lite to tilt trade when the cattle
did arrive, so there waa not much oppor
tunity for advancing prices.
About the usual proportion of the re
ceipts consisted of corn-ted steers and some
of them were of fair quality, as will be
seen from the sales below. The market
could safely be quoted steady and in some
spots it looked a little stronger. Trading,
tnough, was slow, and that, together wltn
the late arrival of trains, made It late In
the day before anything like a clearance
was made.
There was a fairly good demand for cow
stuff, but, the same as with steers, the
day waa well advanced before the market
opened. The general situation could best
be described by calling the market steady
to strong on the desirable grades, with
others Just about steady. Buyers all aeemsd
to want u few cattle, but at the same time
they did not tako hold with any life, and
the cattle changed hands slowly.
Bulls, veal calves and stags did not show
a great deal of change from yesterday.
Speculators all seemed to be anxious for
j pood heavy feeders thl.-" morning ana such
kinus cliaiigca nanus very rreeiy at sieaay
prices, and in fact some sales looked a
little stronger. When It cume to the com
mon and light cattle, however, the demand
was very limited and salesmen found It dif
ficult to dispose of such kinds at what
looked lo be steady prices. Representative

SH H.KP-There was quite a liberal run
of sheep reported, hut, th same as with
rattle and nogs, they nero very siow In

unfavorable to the selling Interests, as
they showed that the mutton market was
In had shape. That being the situation,
local packers were extremely bearish and
the market suffered a sever slump. The
prices paid were naturally vary unevett
and ranged all tha way from about steady
to aa much as a ausrter lower In extreme
cases, (talesmen were, of course, not pre
pared to tske off thst much In one l imo,
sndas a result trading was extremely slow
and It was late before snytlilng like a
clearance was made. On thing that hsiped
the market was the fact thst quit a tsw
of the shipments hsd been sold to arrive.
so thst there were not as many on sale as
