From the standpoint of Chief of Pollca
ttonahue the extension of the midnight
closing- ordinance for saloons to 1 o'clock,
as proponed In the council, la not a good
thing. The chief thinks that the hour's
difference will contribute to Immorality and
crime, and that possible privileges to be en
Joyed by actors and theater patrons will be
in small proportion to the harm done.
The city legal department la authority for
tho statement that the proposed ordinance
conflicts In no way with the Slocura law.
It Is Juvtltied by its supporters on the
ground that often persons coming Into
cafes from the theaters cannot get their or
ders for meat and drink served and paid for
before the stroke of 13.
"I shall continue to enforce the midnight
closing law closely until the new ordinance
is parsed end approved," said Chief Dona
hue. "There Is no doubt that the proposed
change will be advantageous to the Baloon
men. as they can do much' more business
between the hours of 12 and 1 than from
4 to ( In the morning. It will be noticed
that the time during which saloons must
remain closed Is the same, it simply being
thrown an hour forward.

"Personally I do not wish to pose as
favoring or disapproving of the ordinance,
but since you asked me what effect I
think tho change would have on the
morality and good order of the city, I must
say that I think the change would be a
bad one. I know that some thirty or more
actors and actresses playing here every
night at the three theaters seldom get
out of their dressing rooms before mid
night and that they like a little refresh
ment before going to bed. But they can
arrange for their drinks In advance and
have -them In their rooms. Bo far as
theatrical patrons are concerned they are
usually able to get all they wont before
midnight and about the time the last cars
go.

would mean the cry of discrimination and
It hardly seems a fair proposition.
' "I have always held that places that
sell liquor should close at midnight as I
believe every man and woman whose work
does not prevent it should be In their

afford much more opportunity for drunken
ness, fighting, debauchery and general Im

all. Saloon men are now given until 12:30
to balance accounts and arrange their
closing for the night after business has
been stopped at 12. The extension would
mean about 1:30 before the places were
actually closed and we all know that
saloon men, like those in every other bust
ness are prone to get all they can."
